Ushahidi: Creating a New Narrative

  • 0:03 - 0:06
I think what Ushahidi does is, it allows people to participate.
  • 0:06 - 0:11
You know. Instead of one organization saying that here's what happened.
  • 0:11 - 0:16
I think this is an opportunity for everyone to create the narrative.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
Making it many to many instead of one to many.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    like we've been accustomed.
  • 0:20 - 0:23
I think a lesson to learn here
  • 0:23 - 0:26
is that aid is more effective if the loop is round.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
When you implement the program where you collect
  • 0:29 - 0:33
data. You can close the loop by feeding back information
  • 0:33 - 0:38
to the citizens in a useful way and in a format they can use.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
When the post election violence broke in Kenya
  • 0:40 - 0:43
I had been covering the election quite a bit on my blog
  • 0:43 - 0:46
and in that process, the disconnect
  • 0:46 - 0:49
from what I was hearing from my sources and what
  • 0:49 - 0:52
was happening in the media was very wide.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
And as I posted the idea of what became Ushahidi
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    onto my blog.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    Eric got in touch.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
That was home for me. Kenya's always been home for me.
  • 1:02 - 1:07
It's where my network runs deepest on the continent.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
Ushahidi became successful because we have
  • 1:09 - 1:11
the support of the Kenyan bloggers.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
We ended up with more than a hundred and thirty one
  • 1:14 - 1:17
unique IP addresses submitting information into the mashup
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    of one three month period.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
And so that was Ushahidi saying ok, here is
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    a very simple rudimentary application
  • 1:23 - 1:25
that allows us to get reports from ordinary people.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
Saying what's going on around them in this crazy,
  • 1:28 - 1:31
chaotic space that was Kenya at the time.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
Ushahidi at the time we built it, which was 2 years ago,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
was already 3 year old technology.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
Anybody in the world could have built this three
  • 1:37 - 1:39
years prior to when we built it.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
So the technology was nothing new or ground breaking.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    And still isn't.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
It's a use of this technology in a more dynamic way
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    that is ground breaking.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
To me, saving one life alone, has validated Ushahidi entirely.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
so that makes a big difference.
  • 1:56 -
    I'm completely satisfied.
