Lick #4: Hammer 6's (Guitar Lesson LK-004) How to play

So this lick that we're
checking out today is

the Hammer 6's lick and

it's all about hammering on groups of six

So we've got here this little pattern here

One two three four five six

One two three four five six

One two three four five six slide

Let's go to a close up

check it out, then I'll show
you some variations of it

Ok, let's slow that down

So we've got here

Starting on the second string

We've got 7, 8, 10

So it's just picking the first note

Hammer, hammer

This is really a kind of hammer-on lick

Then the same on the thinnest string

7, 8, 10

Back to the second string, same thing

7, 8, 10

Now over on to the third string

We're gonna go

7, 9, 11

First, second, fourth

Then we move up a little bit

We're gonna go back to second string

We're gonna go

10- sorry

8, 10, 12

8, 10, 12 and

slide up to 15th fret
with the little finger

If you've been doing your finger gym

And you've kinda got used to your

hammer-ons & flick-offs then

this shouldn't be too difficult

It's just a fun way of kind of navigating

your way around the fingerboard a bit

As usual, the thing here to extract is

the essence of the lick

That's what you should be
looking for each time you learn a lick

What's the essence?

What's the thing in the lick

that I can steal and then manipulate and

try and change into my own licks?

So, in this case

it's using only hammer-ons

and using them in a group of six

So if we just look at position 1

of the 3 note per string G major scale

We could pick the middle two strings

And that would be a group of six
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

We could move it up to
the next group of six

There's a billion different ways
of experimenting with this

particular idea of just using hammer-ons

especially if you've been doing any of my

Legato scales exercises

where you're learning your

That stuff

Well, this is just kind of-

It's a bit easier, really

because it's just hammer-ons

So you just

And try to find different ways that
you might be able to use

groups of six and just hammer-ons

on the scale neck

So go and have an experiment

See what different licks that you can
come up with that sound really cool

using the G major scale

And then move it to
some other keys, as usual

and then try and apply it and
put it into some tunes
