JUSTIN Method Training Exercises 4 (Guitar Lesson IM-148) How to play IF Stage 4

  • 0:12 - 0:13
Hi, how are you doing ?
    Justin here!
  • 0:13 - 0:20
Welcome to IM-148, where we're now doing
the "Just use sound to improve now!" - lesson.
  • 0:20 - 0:26
    In exercise '4A',
which is our "Chord progression transcriptions",
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    we've now got eight chords
  • 0:27 - 0:31
so we're looking at the E-shape
    and the A-shape bar chords,
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    for both major, minor, minor-7
    and dominant-7th chords,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    so you really gotta get
your ears nice and big now!
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    Remember, first of all,
you're listening for the root note.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
Then try to figure out if it's gonna be
    a 6th string root or a 5th string root
  • 0:45 - 0:47
and then try to listen out,
    whether it's a major chord,
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    minor chord, a minor-7 chord
    or a dominant 7th chord.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
A lot of people have trouble
    hearing the difference
  • 0:54 - 0:58
    between a minor and a minor-7,
    including me, I might add.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
The thing with minor 7th chords -
they've got a little bit more of an open sound.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
That is something that you really wanna practise
    listening for yourself.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
So, I'm gonna pick a C minor here now,
    just randomly.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    So, a C minor
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    Then, lift of little finger
    and listen to a C minor-7
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    Listen the difference?
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    For me, it opens more.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
C minor-7 has a slightly wider kind of sound,
    I don't know why.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    Yeah, that's the only way
I can think to describe it,
  • 1:32 - 1:34

    it's just more open.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    So, play those things,
    listen to them yourself,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
you know, the best way to do this
    is to play the chord
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    . . .
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    play another chord
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    . . .
  • 1:42 - 1:44
Try to find the flavour of the chord,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    really listen to
how does the chord affect you.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
What exactly is going on there
    with that chord
  • 1:49 - 1:51
as far as your ear goes.
    That's the trick!
  • 1:51 - 1:53
Now, also in for all this time,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    we've got chord changes happening
    halfway through a bar.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
So I'm not necessarily gonna be
    playing one chord for a whole four beats;
  • 1:59 - 2:02
there might be two beats on one chord
and two beats on another chord
  • 2:02 - 2:05
Not every time, but you need to
keep an ear out for that as well.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
Make sure that you fill the chords
in the worksheet in the appropriate place!
  • 2:09 - 2:14
For '4B' now we're going to be doing a transcription
    using the G major-scale.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
We've done a little bit of that before,
    this one's just a little bit more complicated;
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    a few more notes,
    a little bit more syncopation
  • 2:21 - 2:28
and if you can - please try to write down
the rhythm of the solo as well as the notes.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
We've done quite a bit of rhythmic dictation now,
so that's really what you're aiming for
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    whenever you do a transcription
is writing down the TAB of the notes
  • 2:35 - 2:39
and then being able to add
the rhythm above it if you can!
  • 2:39 - 2:45
In '4C', which is our rhythm dictation,
we also introduced now a 16th note
  • 2:45 - 2:48
which is four notes for one metronome-click.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
So, make sure you listen out for that!
  • 2:50 - 2:53
It's gonna be the same 8th note stuff
    that we've done before,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    but now, sometimes,
    within that one beat,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
you'll hear four notes within the beat.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
They should kinda stand out for you,
  • 3:00 - 3:04
because they're faster than the other notes
    by quite a lot.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
Well exactly twice as fast as 8th notes
    as it happens.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
So they shouldn't be too difficult
    for you to figure out.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    If you're unsure of writing,
there's a link on the lesson page
  • 3:12 - 3:15
that'll take you to the rhythm writing
    and rhythm reading page,
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    so you might wanna go
    and check that out!
  • 3:17 - 3:22
As I've mentioned now quite a few times,
the most important thing is that you use your ears,
  • 3:22 - 3:26
so go and download those mp3's,
    get them into your transcribe-player,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
download the worksheet, print it out
    and start filling it in.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
Make your ears do all of the learning now!
  • 3:32 - 3:35
So, hope you have fun with that,
see you for another lesson real soon.
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    Bye-bye!
