  1. Enrichment and training programs
  2. are ingrained in the work that we do every day.
  3. They're not extras, they're not if we have time,
  4. they are the baseline for animal care here at the Academy.
  5. We have what we like to say 38,000 animals under our care,
  6. everything from Leaf Cutter Ants to American Alligator to Sharks
  7. and that looks different for everyone.
  8. You're not going to have the same program for an Octopus
  9. that you would for a Leaf Cutter Ant, per se,
  10. but we take all of their needs and conditions
  11. that need to be met for them to really thrive into consideration,
  12. so everything from naturalistic exhibits and mixed-species exhibits
  13. to formal training programs where we're focusing on specific behaviors,
  14. to providing a lot of choices within the environments
  15. for the animals to choose from on a daily basis.
  16. Each one has its personality.
  17. In fact, that's one of the easiest ways we can distinguish
  18. between who's who.
  19. Some of them are a little more shy,
  20. some of them will come up to you right away.
  21. Some of them will hang out with you the whole time.
  22. Getting in with them is probably the highlight of my week.
  23. The minute we get in, we're just surrounded by them,
  24. whether they want a little scratch on the nose
  25. or some of them like to be kind of petted on the head.
  26. They like that interaction, even when there's not a treat involved.
  27. We not only take care of the rays, we monitor their diets,
  28. We also will put different objects in their habitat
  29. just to kind of keep things different.
  30. In the wild, their habitat would constantly changing,
  31. It kind of keeps them, their mind moving and active and curious.
  32. Every morning we do enrichment during the feeding programs.
  33. For the scale training they're stepping up onto the scale,
  34. we can see if their weight is fluctuating,
  35. because they can't talk to us,
  36. we don't know if they're not feeling well, if they're getting sick,
  37. so weight decreases and eating less food is really important
  38. for us to talk to our vet and see what he thinks might be going on.
  39. Enrichment can be anything from putting logs and rocks in the exhibit,
  40. or nesting material.
  41. I'll hand it out and they'll grab it with their beak
  42. and bring it back to their nest.
  43. We want to have changes in there for them,
  44. something new in their environment
  45. or that stimulates their brain in a certain way.
  46. The enrichment's definitely important for our personal relationship,
  47. so they can trust me more, I can trust them a little bit more.
  48. They know that I'm not trying to hurt them.
  49. Training is really building a language between you and an animal.
  50. We can't ask them questions, so we have to find a way to communicate with each other
  51. and to identify what we want from them
  52. and what they want and need from us too.
  53. it allows us to actually move them back and forth
  54. between their night quarters
  55. and when they're on exhibit during the day in the Rainforest.
  56. Another example of their training program
  57. is something like nail trimming or clippings,
  58. That's a kind of routine part of their care,
  59. and makes veterinary exams a little easier and prevents them
  60. Nicht synchronisiert
from breaking a nail and causing any kind of injury.
  61. Nicht synchronisiert
Other programs include really fun things, and With Macaws
  62. Nicht synchronisiert
it's usually related to chewing and food.
  63. Nicht synchronisiert
    They're natural chewers.
  64. Nicht synchronisiert
They forage all day long in the forests
  65. Nicht synchronisiert
looking for fruits and seeds and nuts,
  66. Nicht synchronisiert
so we give them browse that we actually cut out of the Rainforest.
  67. Nicht synchronisiert
I also love giving them puzzle toys
  68. Nicht synchronisiert
so I actually hide parts of their food or treats
  69. Nicht synchronisiert
like nuts in items that they have to manipulate
  70. Nicht synchronisiert
and try to get those things out of.
  71. Nicht synchronisiert
That's really good stimulation for them
  72. Nicht synchronisiert
    it's really fantastic.
  73. Nicht synchronisiert
Having to problem solve to make sure that the animals in your care
  74. Nicht synchronisiert
are truly receiving the highest quality care is really exciting.
  75. Nicht synchronisiert
Then to also be able to turn around and to share that with our guests,
  76. Nicht synchronisiert
and to really let these animal ambassadors
  77. Nicht synchronisiert
shine through as what they are here for,
  78. Nicht synchronisiert
    to educate and inspire everybody.
  79. Nicht synchronisiert
It really reinforces the idea that as living organisms
  80. Nicht synchronisiert
we're all connected and we have so much in common,
  81. Nicht synchronisiert
and we're really not that different.
  82. Nicht synchronisiert
We all care about where we're going to get our food,
  83. Nicht synchronisiert
do we have shelter, all those important things.
  84. Nicht synchronisiert
It's really no different for all of these creatures, too.
  85. Nicht synchronisiert
Watching that everyday kind of reestablishes that connection
  86. Nicht synchronisiert
for me to the rest of the living world.
  87. Nicht synchronisiert
Here at the Academy, we like to say that we have 38,000 animals
  88. Nicht synchronisiert
in our care because we count all those little Leaf Cutter Ants,
  89. Nicht synchronisiert
    and Corals, and Butterflies
  90. Nicht synchronisiert
in addition to the larger animals that we have.
  91. Nicht synchronisiert
Our program is really designed to incorporate all those animals
  92. Nicht synchronisiert
and take into consideration their needs
  93. Nicht synchronisiert
on a day to day basis, and what they need to truly thrive.
