Power Chords 2 (Guitar Lesson BC-186) Guitar for beginners Stage 8 English transcript
-
0:07 - 0:09Hi how are you doing, Justin here.
-
0:09 - 0:11In this video today we are going to be
-
0:11 - 0:13checking out more Power Chords
-
0:13 - 0:15this time we're going to be checking the ones
-
0:15 - 0:16that have a got a 5th string root.
-
0:16 - 0:19Now every power chord can be found
-
0:19 - 0:20in two different places,
-
0:20 - 0:21one with a 6th string root
-
0:21 - 0:23and one with a 5th string root.
-
0:23 - 0:25The last lesson that we looked at power chords
-
0:25 - 0:27we were checking out 6th string root ones.
-
0:27 - 0:29So I'm hoping that you've got the shape down.
-
0:29 - 0:30You can move it up and down,
-
0:30 - 0:31you understand the idea of the root note
-
0:31 - 0:33and maybe you've played a few riffs as well.
-
0:33 - 0:36So what we are checking out this time is
-
0:36 - 0:37power chords with a 5th string root.
-
0:37 - 0:40So lets have a look at a C5 power chord
-
0:40 - 0:42So, there's a C5,
-
0:42 - 0:46you can see here our 1st finger is on the root note
-
0:46 - 0:50We've got here the 3rd finger and the 4th finger underneath
-
0:50 - 0:52So it's exactly the same shape
-
0:52 - 0:53here was our G5
-
0:53 - 0:56and this is exactly the same shape
-
0:56 - 0:59but moved down toward the ground one string.
-
0:59 - 1:00Now the other really important thing to realize
-
1:00 - 1:04probably the most important thing to realize with this chord
-
1:04 - 1:07is that the tip of your first finger is touching
-
1:07 - 1:09the 6th string to mute it.
-
1:09 - 1:12If you forget to do that, and you hit that open string
-
1:12 - 1:14often it will sound really atrocious,
-
1:14 - 1:16especially if you've got distortion on,
-
1:16 - 1:18so really make sure that the tip of your finger
-
1:18 - 1:20is almost like you put it on the note normally
-
1:20 - 1:23and then just kind of push the tip of it up
-
1:23 - 1:27until you train it to always touch the 6th string.
-
1:27 - 1:29That mutings of the 6th string are really constraints
-
1:29 - 1:32and enough it is incredibly incredibly important
-
1:32 - 1:36it's one of the things that if I hear a student playing
-
1:36 - 1:37and they are forgetting to hit that 6th string
-
1:37 - 1:41it's really rank! Especially rock guitar players
-
1:41 - 1:42that young guitar players
-
1:42 - 1:44that haven't learnt to do this trick
-
1:44 - 1:45or haven't mastered it
-
1:45 - 1:47it's some of the most horrible sounding rock stuff
-
1:47 - 1:48I've ever heard,
-
1:48 - 1:50so really, if you gonna focus on one thing
-
1:50 - 1:51to do with this chord,
-
1:51 - 1:53make sure it covering that 6th string
-
1:53 - 1:55and muting it so it doesn't make a sound.
-
1:55 - 1:58Now, once you've got the chord shape down
-
1:58 - 1:59for the C, cause I haven't that
-
1:59 - 2:01if you've got one of the 6th string root down,
-
2:01 - 2:03you shouldn't find this one too difficult.
-
2:03 - 2:05The next trick is to have a go at trying to play
-
2:05 - 2:08some riffs and moving this chord up and down.
-
2:08 - 2:09We are not worried about changing between
-
2:09 - 2:116th string and 5th string yet,
-
2:11 - 2:12that's gonna come in the next stage.
-
2:12 - 2:14But what we really are trying to do now is move the
-
2:14 - 2:165th string root around, so
-
2:16 - 2:17we might in a, like it could,
-
2:17 - 2:19progression might be something like
-
2:19 - 2:26D C F Bb
-
2:26 - 2:30quite a common funky little chord progression
-
2:30 - 2:31and of course
-
2:33 - 2:35in the process of trying to play these
-
2:35 - 2:36you have to learn where the root notes are
-
2:36 - 2:39You have to know that D root note
-
2:39 - 2:43is found at the 5th fret of the 5th string
-
2:43 - 2:47and C is found at the 3rd fret of the 5th string
-
2:47 - 2:50and F is found all the way up at the 8th fret of the 5th string
-
2:50 - 2:52and you have to remember that that's your 1st finger
-
2:52 - 2:54who is going on that root note
-
2:54 - 2:56otherwise you won't be able to play it.
-
2:56 - 2:58So have a little play around with these
-
2:58 - 3:005th string root power chords,
-
3:00 - 3:01moving them up and down
-
3:01 - 3:02making sure your stretch is good
-
3:02 - 3:05Really double checking and triple checking
-
3:05 - 3:07that the 6th string is covered
-
3:07 - 3:08and sometimes it's worth even
-
3:08 - 3:10just deliberately picking the 6th string a bit harder
-
3:10 - 3:14just to make sure that that note is properly covered.
-
3:14 - 3:16and of course the 1st and 2nd strings,
-
3:16 - 3:18the thinnest two strings, are also muted
-
3:18 - 3:20by the inside of the first finger
-
3:20 - 3:23exactly as they were for the 6th string root powerchords
-
3:23 - 3:26which was a, I think a G5 was the one I showed you specifically.
-
3:26 - 3:28But, have a bit of fun with those.
-
3:28 - 3:29if you've got an electric guitar
-
3:29 - 3:32do try playing them with a little bit of distortion as well,
-
3:32 - 3:34just those open strings ringing out
-
3:34 - 3:35or if some of the notes should be buzzy
-
3:35 - 3:38that kind of highlights that, so...
-
3:38 - 3:39it kind of...
-
3:39 - 3:40look, it emphasizes your mistakes
-
3:40 - 3:44so that's why sometimes a good thing to do
-
3:44 - 3:46is to play with a bit of distorsion
-
3:46 - 3:48so you can hear clearly
-
3:48 - 3:50what you're doing wrong and try and fix it.
-
3:50 - 3:52So have fun with that, rock yourself out
-
3:52 - 3:54and I'll see you in a sec to talk about
-
3:54 - 3:57your practice routine for this stage.
