0:00:13.693,0:00:15.257 Hello my friends. 0:00:15.257,0:00:19.544 Here we are, this lesson is the [br]Part 1 of learning about Power Chords. 0:00:19.544,0:00:21.888 So, what are Power Chords, first of all? 0:00:21.888,0:00:26.374 So, a Power Chord is a kind of [br]a Rock Guitar chord shape that you use. 0:00:26.374,0:00:29.143 It's, the actual shape stays the same. 0:00:29.143,0:00:30.792 So there are two things [br]that we need to learn. 0:00:30.792,0:00:32.261 First Of all, how to play the shape. 0:00:32.261,0:00:33.946 And secondly, how to move it around. 0:00:33.946,0:00:36.697 So that we can change that [br]one shape into lots of different chords. 0:00:36.697,0:00:38.390 So what they sound like? 0:00:38.390,0:00:42.113 If you're one of, most of [br]you rock guys won't be playing Telecasters, 0:00:42.113,0:00:45.320 but this is a fairly meaty [br]sounding Tele as far as they go. 0:00:45.320,0:00:46.925 it's this kind of 0:00:46.925,0:00:52.906 . . . 0:00:52.906,0:00:55.058 That kind of, quite a [br]big, kind of fat meaty, 0:00:55.058,0:00:57.502 rock sound, is what [br]we're kinda going for here. 0:00:57.502,0:01:00.640 So really what it is is just [br]three notes that you play each time, 0:01:00.640,0:01:03.457 and these notes would be [br]what's called the Root note, 0:01:03.457,0:01:07.557 the 5th of the chord, [br]and then the octave. 0:01:07.557,0:01:11.102 You're actually only playing [br]three notes every time. 0:01:11.102,0:01:16.854 Now some Power Chords [br]are only played with two fingers, 0:01:16.854,0:01:18.655 but I'll explain that a little bit later on. 0:01:18.655,0:01:24.072 So, the first things that you need [br]to know about is this Root note idea. 0:01:24.072,0:01:28.367 So I really advise that you [br]watch this video through my webpage. 0:01:28.367,0:01:31.723 So if you're not on my [br]webpage now, if you're just at YouTube, 0:01:31.723,0:01:34.049 you'll find it a lot easier [br]if you go to the website, 0:01:34.049,0:01:36.951 because then you'll get to see, like [br]the little neck diagram of the chords, 0:01:36.951,0:01:38.465 and the tabs, [br]and all that sort of stuff. 0:01:38.465,0:01:41.688 So, I'd advise you, [br]you know, if you're not there now, 0:01:41.688,0:01:43.649 maybe nip off to the website,[br]find the same lesson. 0:01:43.649,0:01:46.964 So, what we've got to check out[br]is this Root note idea. 0:01:46.964,0:01:48.603 So if you have a [br]look at the little diagram there 0:01:48.603,0:01:51.018 you'll see of the three notes[br]that make the Power Chord, 0:01:51.018,0:01:54.881 the lowest note, on the 6th string,[br]is called the Root note. 0:01:54.881,0:01:58.667 And the note that we place that Root note on[br]becomes the name of the chord. 0:01:58.667,0:02:04.114 So, if I put this Root note [br]of this next Power Chord here on the 3rd fret, 0:02:04.114,0:02:08.419 the 3rd fret, on the 6th string, [br]the thickest string, is the note G. 0:02:08.419,0:02:12.882 So if I play the Power Chord shape there [br]at the 3rd fret, 0:02:12.882,0:02:15.217 it becomes a G Power Chord. 0:02:15.217,0:02:17.368 Sometimes Power Chords [br]are referred to as 5, 0:02:17.368,0:02:18.839 so this'd be written G5. 0:02:18.839,0:02:21.013 Sometimes it's just written G [br]and you play a Power Chord. 0:02:21.013,0:02:23.879 You know, different people, [br]different ways of writing it down. 0:02:23.879,0:02:26.131 So now we're in G. 0:02:26.131,0:02:28.153 Now if we move [br]that whole shape up again, 0:02:28.153,0:02:32.217 and put it on the 5th fret, so our 1st finger[br]was in the 5th fret of the 6th string, 0:02:32.217,0:02:37.314 that's the note A, so that would make it[br]an A Power Chord, or an A5. 0:02:37.314,0:02:41.403 And if we move it up to the 7th fret,[br]it would be a B. 0:02:41.403,0:02:45.051 Up to the 8th fret, it'd be a C. 0:02:45.051,0:02:48.349 Now, of course it's also useful [br]if you understand your sharps and flats. 0:02:48.349,0:02:50.852 Knowing that flat always goes down, 0:02:50.852,0:02:53.831 like a flat tyre makes the car go down,[br]or the tyre go down. 0:02:53.831,0:02:58.261 So if we were on A, which is the 5th fret,[br]and then we want Ab, 0:02:58.261,0:03:04.035 we'd go, 5th fret, we'd go flat, [br]like lower, down to the 4th fret, 0:03:04.035,0:03:06.532 and we'd have Ab Power Chord. 0:03:06.532,0:03:09.546 Same with sharp, if you sit [br]on something sharp you'd jump up. 0:03:09.546,0:03:11.845 So sharps make the sound go up. 0:03:11.845,0:03:16.178 So if we had F, which is [br]at the first fret, and we wanted F#, 0:03:16.178,0:03:21.650 we would go up one fret, from F to F#,[br]and that would be at the 2nd fret. 0:03:21.650,0:03:25.315 So, the next thing that you need to know,[br]you need to get a bit 0:03:25.315,0:03:27.950 of a close up, and make sure [br]that you know how to place your fingers. 0:03:27.950,0:03:29.283 So let's go to that now. 0:03:29.283,0:03:32.759 OK so here we are at the, [br]this is the 3rd fret just here. 0:03:32.759,0:03:36.379 What I'm gonna do is I'm putting [br]my 1st finger down in the 3rd fret. 0:03:36.379,0:03:39.223 Making sure of course it's [br]nice and close to the fret. 0:03:39.223,0:03:41.388 Because that's the good place [br]to position your finger. 0:03:41.388,0:03:43.548 Then you're gonna reach out [br]with your 3rd finger, 0:03:43.548,0:03:45.147 and put that two frets higher. 0:03:45.147,0:03:47.645 So it's gonna be [br]in the 5th fret of the 5th string, 0:03:47.645,0:03:50.930 and then little finger will [br]sneak in underneath that one. 0:03:50.930,0:03:54.449 So getting both of them [br]as close to the fret as you possibly can. 0:03:54.449,0:03:57.274 Remember to try and kinda keep these two [br]locked together a bit, 0:03:57.274,0:03:59.357 so they're kinda pressing together. 0:03:59.357,0:04:01.865 That helps you keep the shape [br]when you start moving it around a lot. 0:04:01.865,0:04:06.028 So that'll be your G5 Power Chord. 0:04:06.028,0:04:09.795 Now the thing here [br]that's really important to realize is 0:04:09.795,0:04:14.009 that the rest of the strings, [br]the other three strings, are not sounding. 0:04:14.009,0:04:16.363 That's really important [br]because if you're like, 0:04:16.363,0:04:20.396 trying to just play those three notes, [br]and you've left the other ones open, 0:04:20.396,0:04:23.482 you're gonna get [br]those open strings ringing out, 0:04:23.482,0:04:26.013 and especially with a lot of distortion,[br]it'll sound really horrible. 0:04:26.013,0:04:29.740 I want you to look here [br]at my 1st finger, now it's not pressing it down 0:04:29.740,0:04:33.491 like it's a barre chord, [br]it's just touching the strings, 0:04:33.491,0:04:36.485 down here, so the 1st finger [br]is pressing down only that note. 0:04:36.485,0:04:39.362 And all of the rest of it's, [br]it's kind of a bit rounder than normal, 0:04:39.362,0:04:43.572 and it's actually [br]just keeping those strings completely muted. 0:04:43.572,0:04:47.662 So that there's no sound [br]coming out of those strings at all. 0:04:47.662,0:04:52.494 Try and make sure that that finger there[br]is nice and muting the strings. 0:04:52.494,0:04:55.622 So if I play with just, [br]I'll turn the distortion back a little bit, 0:04:55.622,0:04:57.879 so you can hear, [br]so a G Power Chord, which is here, 0:04:57.879,0:05:01.151 at the 3rd fret, [br]should sound like (plays) 0:05:01.151,0:05:05.269 but then ,[br]so there's three notes dead. 0:05:05.269,0:05:09.537 And the top three completely muted. 0:05:09.537,0:05:12.261 It's really important.[br](plays) 0:05:12.261,0:05:17.104 Otherwise the shape is pretty cool. 0:05:17.104,0:05:20.908 It's OK to have that finger [br]extended off the fretboard. 0:05:20.908,0:05:26.053 The 2nd finger kind of sits up like that. 0:05:26.053,0:05:28.003 And sometimes it sits down like that,[br]it doesn't really matter. 0:05:28.003,0:05:31.409 The important thing is [br]that the 1st finger is doing those mutes. 0:05:31.409,0:05:35.154 So you've got the mutes happening [br]and you've got the shape happening. 0:05:35.154,0:05:37.323 The next thing that you need to do[br]is start to practice 0:05:37.323,0:05:39.904 a little bit just moving [br]that shape around a little bit. 0:05:39.904,0:05:43.337 Now there's a really common kind of riff[br]that you can use for this. 0:05:43.337,0:05:47.573 Which is the 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'[br]kind of chord progression. 0:05:47.573,0:05:49.958 Now I'm gonna show, this isn't [br]the way to play it off the record. 0:05:49.958,0:05:52.772 This is just an exercise [br]for you to get used to it. 0:05:52.772,0:05:55.099 Now, to get used to the Power Chords[br]and keep them moving around. 0:05:55.099,0:05:57.475 Now, remembering what I said[br]about how important it is 0:05:57.475,0:05:59.869 to keep those thin strings muted, 0:05:59.869,0:06:01.902 I mean [br]if you wanted to be really careful 0:06:01.902,0:06:04.117 you could make sure [br]that you only pick those three strings, 0:06:04.117,0:06:07.070 the thickest three strings [br]that the fingers are on for the Power Chord. 0:06:07.070,0:06:08.903 But let's face it, if you're doing a gig, 0:06:08.903,0:06:11.652 especially playing like a rock gig[br]like Foo Fighters or Nirvana, 0:06:11.652,0:06:12.755 and whatever. 0:06:12.755,0:06:14.582 You don't want [br]to be sitting there staring at your guitar, 0:06:14.582,0:06:17.449 and checking out the picks, there's gonna be like [br]hot chicks to look at, 0:06:17.449,0:06:20.370 and stuff, you know it's not, [br]you don't wanna be staring like this. 0:06:20.370,0:06:22.035 So it's really important [br]that you get to the point, 0:06:22.035,0:06:24.305 so you can really, [br]like this hand, your strumming hand, 0:06:24.305,0:06:28.480 can, bash all of the notes[br]and it doesn't matter, 0:06:28.480,0:06:30.799 and it just, it keeps the Power Chord[br]nice and clean. 0:06:30.799,0:06:34.255 So if we use our [br]'Smells Like Teen Spirit' as an example, 0:06:34.255,0:06:36.471 this has only got four chords, 0:06:36.471,0:06:38.156 and this isn't the way [br]that they play it on the record. 0:06:38.156,0:06:40.551 This is just an example for you [br]to get your chords moving around. 0:06:40.551,0:06:42.782 I will be doing a lesson[br]on this song really soon. 0:06:42.782,0:06:45.185 Cause it's a rocking song, [br]and it kicks ass for learning Power Chords. 0:06:45.185,0:06:46.214 But. 0:06:46.214,0:06:55.437 It's got the, the basic chord progression [br]is just going (plays) F#, B to A to D. 0:06:55.437,0:06:58.134 Now, I'm gonna call out [br]what frets they are on, 0:06:58.134,0:07:00.599 but, I want you to check out[br]on my website, 0:07:00.599,0:07:03.504 there's a little chart that shows you[br]where the different Root notes are. 0:07:03.504,0:07:06.015 Cause all your doing is [br]moving that one Power Chord shape, 0:07:06.015,0:07:08.276 up and down, and changing the Root note, 0:07:08.276,0:07:10.151 which is the lowest note of the chord[br]in this case. 0:07:10.151,0:07:13.319 So, F# is at the 2nd fret. 0:07:13.319,0:07:15.936 B is at the 7th fret. 0:07:15.936,0:07:18.003 A is at the 5th fret. 0:07:18.003,0:07:21.336 And D is right up at the 10th fret. 0:07:21.336,0:07:22.995 Now even if you just do[br]two strums on each one, 0:07:22.995,0:07:26.736 then it kind of sounds pretty meaty[br]if you're playing the chord nice, 0:07:26.736,0:07:29.513 making sure that you get [br]those, muting those extra strings. 0:07:29.513,0:07:31.051 That's the most important bit there. 0:07:31.051,0:07:34.411 So if you've checked that out, this [br]out as a kind of a sequence, 0:07:34.411,0:07:36.684 just to get used to your Power Chord,[br]and get used to your mute, 0:07:36.684,0:07:39.980 and I'll show you a better way to play it[br]in the Power Chords Pt. 2. 0:07:39.980,0:07:42.335 but try and get [br]these ones down first. 0:07:42.335,0:07:44.751 So, just to show you here again, [br]so this is going from, 0:07:44.751,0:07:54.834 F# - B -A - D.[br](plays) 0:07:54.849,0:08:00.576 . . . 0:08:00.576,0:08:03.534 There you could add in, [br]if your competent at rhythm guitar, 0:08:03.534,0:08:06.276 and you want to try [br]and do the rhythm for it 0:08:06.276,0:08:16.962 . . . 0:08:16.962,0:08:19.272 That was a funny [br]wobbly ending from me, but anyway. 0:08:19.272,0:08:22.353 So, that's just an execise for you. 0:08:22.353,0:08:26.013 There's loads and loads of other songs [br]that you could use to practice this. 0:08:26.013,0:08:30.760 A good one that springs to mind is[br]All The Small Things by Blink 182. 0:08:30.760,0:08:37.137 That's only using the[br]Power Chords of C, G and F. 0:08:37.137,0:08:41.343 Which is 8th fret, 3rd fret and 1st fret. 0:08:41.343,0:08:44.076 Again, they don't play it[br]exactly like that, 0:08:44.076,0:08:46.353 but that's not a bad way[br]of practicing it. 0:08:46.353,0:08:52.521 Starting with a C - G - F - G. 0:08:52.521,0:08:56.547 (plays) back to the C and down to F 0:08:56.547,0:09:00.031 . . . 0:09:00.031,0:09:04.224 It's a really straight forward little riff [br]and it only uses those 3 chords. 0:09:04.224,0:09:05.836 Maybe you should transcribe it yourself. 0:09:05.836,0:09:07.438 It might not be a bad plan. 0:09:07.438,0:09:09.452 Anyway, so, [br]have a muck around with those, 0:09:09.452,0:09:11.227 make sure that you [br]get the technique right. 0:09:11.227,0:09:14.842 Don't forget to check out [br]where the Root notes are on my website. 0:09:14.842,0:09:19.355 And I'll see in a little [br]bit for Power Chords Pt. 2. 0:09:19.355,0:09:21.307 See you dudes. 0:09:21.307,0:09:24.560 (Tassie Devil singing.)
