So I'm Keri Stephens and I am in
    organizational communication
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    and technology.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
And the course that I'll be talking
    about is my meetings course,
  • 0:17 - 0:18
and we call it "Let's Meet",
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    and it's an Undergraduate Signature
    Course.
  • 0:21 - 0:26
So, my approach is really to get them to
    realize that it's important.
  • 0:26 - 0:30
And so I start that conversation off
by asking them to tell me about someone
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    who's a great speaker.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
And they describe what that person looks
    like.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
And what that person, how that person
    performs.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
And then I say "What do you think about
    that person?"
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    What immediately comes to mind?
  • 0:42 - 0:45
Almost immediately what they'll say is
"Oh, they're really smart, they're really
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    competent, they're really confident."
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    And then I'll say
"So have you ever heard someone
  • 0:52 - 0:57
speak like that, and then you later
    learn that they're a jerk?"
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    Or, they're not very smart,
    and everyone always agrees.
  • 1:01 - 1:06
And so that invites this conversation
of the fact that, I don't like it,
  • 1:06 - 1:11
but the bottom line is, people are going
to evaluate you, and make these
  • 1:11 - 1:16
    impressions and these judgments of
you, based on your oral competency.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
And so, let's see if we can get that
    as strong as possible, so
  • 1:19 - 1:21
what you have to offer can shine.
