Top 10 Bicycle-Friendly Design Elements in Copenhagen
  • 0:03 - 0:07
    Chapter 06: Macro design
  • 0:09 - 0:12
Macro Design represents the city's showcase projects.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
The crown jewels and missing links
  • 0:14 - 0:19
that make it so easy to get around the city of Copenhagen by bicycle.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    bicycle and pedestrian bridges
  • 0:37 - 0:42
Copenhagen wouldn't be Copenahagen without a harbour, but the water environment
  • 0:42 - 0:45
makes for a logistical challenge when trying to move people and goods
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    over this watery environment.
  • 0:47 - 0:53
In 2006 a bridge was constructed to connect Vesterbro and the inner city
  • 0:53 - 0:59
with Islands Quay and Islands brygge and the southern part of the city.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
Now, based on the study that was launched in 2012,
  • 1:03 - 1:08
70% of the people traversing this bridge do so to get to work.
  • 1:08 - 1:15
So it makes them to commute faster and 9000 people have used the bridge as in 2012 number.
  • 1:18 - 1:23
Luckily for Copenhagen the city didn't stop with this one pedestrian and bicycle bridge,
  • 1:23 - 1:28
they have many plans for future developments as many as 9 other bridges
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    to contact the harbor sites.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
How people most eagerly awaited infrastructural project to be
  • 1:34 - 1:38
is the Superslangen or the bicycle snake. Which will link Vesterbro
  • 1:38 - 1:42
with there already completed bicycle bridge that I was talking about earlier.
  • 1:42 - 1:46
Now this project is very exciting because it is expected to double
  • 1:46 - 1:50
the capacity of bicycles going along this road.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    cycle superhighways
  • 1:55 - 2:01
There are currently two bicycle superhighways in operation in Copenhagen
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    and the greater Copenhagen area.
  • 2:03 - 2:10
The first is the Albertslund route (C99) which extents to the west of the city for 17 km.
  • 2:10 - 2:16
And second is the Farum route (C95) which goes to the north of the city for 16 km.
  • 2:16 - 2:21
Along the way there are bicycle footrests advertising the route
  • 2:21 - 2:27
and showing the path and these all are painted in an iconic orange colour.
  • 2:27 - 2:32
Along the road, which makes the road different from other cycle tracks in the city
  • 2:32 - 2:36
is the fact that it is completely separated from the highway
  • 2:36 - 2:40
even thought it is in such a close proximity to the motorway.
  • 2:41 - 2:46
As of the 2012 Bicycle Counts, the City of Copenhagen is planning
  • 2:46 - 2:51
28 bicycle superhighways with a total of 400 kilometres.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
So when thinking about macro design
  • 2:55 - 2:59
we have to think of the city as an entire integrated whole.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
So it is not just about lying cycle track in one neighborhood
  • 3:02 - 3:07
and forgetting it or leaving it to rot. It is about connecting the system.
  • 3:07 - 3:12
So that the user can interact with the city scape and make their days easier
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    and their journeys more enjoyable.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
