Intergenerational Trauma Animation

  • Not Synced
    [Pensive music.]
  • Not Synced
    The story of our communities,
    people, and nation
  • Not Synced
    starts a long, long
    time ago.
  • Not Synced
    [Music]
  • Not Synced
    More than 60,000 years,
    in fact.
  • Not Synced
    [Music.]
  • Not Synced
    This was when our culture
    and our law
  • Not Synced
    first started to thrive.
  • Not Synced
    [Music.]
  • Not Synced
    We knew who we were,
    and where we belonged.
  • Not Synced
We took care of each other,
  • Not Synced
    our land, and our waters.
  • Not Synced
    We ate food that
    made us healthy.
  • Not Synced
    Lived on country,
  • Not Synced
    and abided by our laws,
    and song lines.
  • Not Synced
    Our families, our children,
    were happy,
  • Not Synced
    with strong minds and hearts,
    because
  • Not Synced
    they were where they belonged.
  • Not Synced
    [Strong music.]
  • Not Synced
    [Soft heartbeat.]
  • Not Synced
    But, then...
  • Not Synced
    everything changed.
  • Not Synced
    Colonization came,
  • Not Synced
    bringing wars, disease,
    famine.
  • Not Synced
    Violence.
  • Not Synced
    And the destruction
    and violation
  • Not Synced
    of our cultural laws,
  • Not Synced
    sacred sites,
  • Not Synced
    families,
    and communities.
  • Not Synced
    We were denied our knowledge,
  • Not Synced
    language, ceremonies,
    and identity.
  • Not Synced
The very things that tell us
  • Not Synced
    who we are,
    and where we belong.
  • Not Synced
    And our connections
  • Not Synced
with each other, and the land,
    grew weak.
  • Not Synced
    And then,
  • Not Synced
    our children
    were taken from us.
  • Not Synced
    They had their names changed,
  • Not Synced
    and their identities stripped away.
  • Not Synced
    They were told
    that aboriginal people were bad.
  • Not Synced
    Worse still,
  • Not Synced
    they were told
  • Not Synced
    that their parents,
    and grandparents,
  • Not Synced
    did not want them.
  • Not Synced
    For years, this happened.
  • Not Synced
    Those children became known
  • Not Synced
    as "The Stolen Generations."
  • Not Synced
    Our children were denied love,
  • Not Synced
    and experienced physical, emotional,
    and sexual abuse.
  • Not Synced
    This left very deep,
    very complex,
  • Not Synced
    and very real wounds,
  • Not Synced
    leaving scars that are
    still being felt
  • Not Synced
    personally, socially,
    spiritually, and collectively.
  • Not Synced
    In the time
    when our story started,
  • Not Synced
    we were able to parent
    in the cultural way
  • Not Synced
    that has seen our family
    survive and thrive,
  • Not Synced
    for generations.
  • Not Synced
    Our people were strong,
  • Not Synced
    and our culture flowed,
  • Not Synced
    and healed us
    in times of hurt.
  • Not Synced
    But, since the trauma
    of colonization
  • Not Synced
    and the stolen generations,
  • Not Synced
we have not been able to heal
    in the same way.
  • Not Synced
    We have unknowingly passed
    this trauma to our children,
  • Not Synced
    through sharing our sad stories,
  • Not Synced
    and having them witness
    and experience our pain.
  • Not Synced
    This is known as
    Intergenerational Trauma.
  • Not Synced
    We see symptoms today,
  • Not Synced
    in broken relationships,
  • Not Synced
    disconnected families,
  • Not Synced
    violence, suicide,
  • Not Synced
    and drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Not Synced
    But, this is not
    where our story ends.
  • Not Synced
    We still have
    strong minds and hearts,
  • Not Synced
    and we still know
  • Not Synced
    who we were,
    and where we belong.
  • Not Synced
    By creating safe and strong
    communities together,
  • Not Synced
    supporting our families
    to be free from pain,
  • Not Synced
    returning to our culture,
  • Not Synced
    and building a strength
    of identity,
  • Not Synced
    we can stop the cycle
    of trauma,
  • Not Synced
    and bring about
    positive intergenerational change,
  • Not Synced
    so that we can continue
  • Not Synced
    to thrive for the next
    60,000 years.
  • Not Synced
    There are simple things
  • Not Synced
    that we can all do,
    to help heal our trauma.
