    My life took a slight detour
    three and half years ago

    when I juggled
    for six minutes, 34 seconds,

    wearing a blindfold,
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    breaking my very first
    Guinness World Records title.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    I did it to promote STEM Education -
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    science, technology, engineering, math.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    I'm passionate about it,
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    and you can see it's a tangible example,
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    that you've set your mind to a goal,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    believe in yourself,
    and pursue it with a passion,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    you can accomplish virtually anything.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    You see, too many students,
    they grow up and fail a math test,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    struggle at science,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    and are told by somebody,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    "Hey, you should focus on something else
    because you're not very good at this."
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    Well,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    I've read a fair amount of research
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    that suggests that
    this is simply not true.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    When I was in second grade,
    I tried out for the Gifted Program.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    I took a test, and I failed.
    I didn't get in
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    I wasn't smart enough.
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    I tried out again in fifth grade,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    and I did get in but only for math.
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    Does that mean I couldn't be good
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    at science, history, art or literature?
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    I kept working hard,
    and by the time I finished high school
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    I was offered admission into MIT,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    where I got my electrical
    engineering degree,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    and I tell you it kicked my butt.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    But every time I was challenged,
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    every time I failed,
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    I used it as an opportunity
    to improve and learn.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    And who here has ever said,
    "I don't remember names well."
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    "I've got to left feet, can't dance."
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    "I'm not a great leader."
    "I'm not a good speaker."
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    "I get angry easily."
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    Something's holding you back.
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    Well, I'm here to tell you
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    that if you approach life
    with a growth mindset,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    this idea that
    you can get better at anything,
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    you really can.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    All of these things can be learned,
  • 1:55 - 1:55
    and developed,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    and improved upon,
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    and I break a Guinness World Records
    as an example of that.

    So what happens when you approach life
    with a growth mindset and grit?
  • 2:04 - 2:10
    Well, today I am going to attempt to break
    my 100th Guiness World Record.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    In fact, more accurately, it is my 98th,
    99th and 100th Guiness World Record today.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    Now, many of them are silly or esoteric,
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    like I have the fastest mile run,
    balancing a raw egg
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    on a spoon in my mouth.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    Eight minutes and two seconds.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    (Laughter)
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    (Applause)
  • 2:34 - 2:39
    Sure. It was difficult,
    but not very many people try.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    But there are some records
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    I'm really, really excited
    about and proud of,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    I have the record for
    most consecutive axe juggling catches.
  • 2:47 - 2:53
    Three three-pound axes juggled 839 times
    before I finally fatigued and dropped one.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    I have the record for longest duration
    balancing a ladder on my chin.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    The most bowling balls juggled.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    It's three.
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    (Laughter)
  • 3:02 - 3:07
    I've now juggled blindfolded,
    for more than 22 minutes.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    And then there was that holy grail record,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    that one I didn't think
    I'd ever be able to break,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    which was the most
    juggling catches in one minute.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    If I broke that one,
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    I could become the fastest
    juggler in the world.
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    But I didn't think I could break it.
  • 3:23 - 3:27
    And I'd been juggling for a long time,
    so I practiced and I got my baseline.

    It was like, "OK, this is how fast I am,"
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    and I practiced over the weeks,
    and I didn't get much better.

    So I said, "You know,
    that's not going to happen.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    There's no way I could do that."
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    When I was in recess in grade school,
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    I was the one that was picked last
    for two-hand touch football
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    because I couldn't catch the ball!
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    Who might've think
    I can catch more balls in a minute
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    than anyone has ever
    caught before while juggling?
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    There are also thousands
    of professional jugglers.
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    They do this as their full-time job.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    I work at Cradlepoint,
    a technology company here in Boise.
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    I've been there nine years.
  • 3:58 - 4:02
    I have my lunches, evenings and weekends.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    I also have two kids under three years old
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    and a very supportive wife.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    (Laughter)
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    But after I broke
    a few Guiness World Records,
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    I bought in.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    I developed a growth mindset
    about anything in life.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    You can improve on anything
    with no hard upper limit.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    So I started practicing
    for this Guiness World Record,
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    not with the hope
    that maybe I might break it,
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    but with the belief
    I was going to break it;
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    I knew I was.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    It was just a matter of
    when was it going to be?
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    Because I practiced every day for a year,
  • 4:33 - 4:37
    and after a year of practice,
    I got 428 catches in one minute,
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    becoming the fastest
    juggler in the world.

    Thank you.

    But it didn't end there.

    Somebody else broke my record.
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    So I had to go back
    with a renewed passion and vigor,

    and now I hold the record
    for the world's fastest juggling,
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    with 556 catches in one minute.
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    That's over nine and a quarter
    catches per second.
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    And I thought seven was impossible.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    3.5 years ago,
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    if you'd have asked me when I broke
    my first Guinness World Record
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    if I could possibly break 10 by today,
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    I would have told you
    that is a far stretch.
  • 5:16 - 5:20
    But if you ask me today if I think I can
    break one Guinness World Record per week,
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    I would tell you yes, with confidence
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    because I did it last year.
  • 5:27 - 5:31
    So today, I'm going to attempt to break
    three Guinness World Records live
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    in the next 10 minutes on stage.

    And so I'm going to welcome up
    the witnesses and timekeepers
  • 5:37 - 5:40
    who are going to validate this attempt
    along with my friend here Chris Knight,
  • 5:40 - 5:43
    and we are going to attempt
    to break three world records.

    The first one is
    a partner record, Chris and I.
  • 5:45 - 5:50
    The record is most ping pong balls
    caught in one minute
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    with chopsticks.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    (Laughter)

    When I first practiced
    this record, I caught two.
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    The current record is 31;
  • 6:03 - 6:06
    31 ping pong balls caught
    with chopsticks in a minute.

    Now, the rules simply state -
    and Guinness has some very strict rules -
  • 6:09 - 6:14
    they state that you must throw
    the ping pong ball,
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    catch it cleanly with the chopsticks,
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    and then deposit -
    it has to bounce once and only once -
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    catch cleanly, and then
    deposit it in a container.
  • 6:22 - 6:24
    We're going to use
    an upturned frisbee as our container.

    Chris and I have one world record
    together already:

    most frisbee passes in one minute, at 110.

    I've got folks - to validate for Guinness,
    I've got two people acting as timers,

    two as witnesses, I've got all these
    videos running, photographic evidence,

    we'll submit it for approval later.

    The current record is 31; remember
    the first time we practiced, I got two.

    I'm just discounting one of the catches.

    This next record combines a couple of
    different skills I've worked on.

    One is a lot of weight-lifting
    activities I need to do

    to juggle bowling balls and axes
    and balance heavy objects on my chin.

    So it combines strength training
    with the fast touch,
  • 8:49 - 8:53
    the fast-twitch muscles I use
    for speed juggling.
  • 8:53 - 8:54
    And so for this record
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    I'm going to attempt
  • 8:57 - 8:59
    the fastest time
  • 9:00 - 9:05
    to pass a 20-pound weight
    from hand to hand 100 times.
  • 9:05 - 9:08
    So I have a 20-pound
    kettlebell right there.
  • 9:08 - 9:11
    I'll start with my right hand,
    and I need it to pass into my left hand,
  • 9:11 - 9:15
    back to right hand, left, right 100 times.
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    The time to beat is 18 seconds.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
    If you do the math,
    that is over five passes per second
  • 9:22 - 9:27
    times 20 pounds, so 100 pounds
    of passed weight per second,
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    until I get to do 2000 pounds
    of passed weight.

    I'm going to be doing this very fast.

    It's going to be very difficult to count,
    so I am going to count every other pass.

    I'll start with my right hand
    and go to my left hand,

    I'll say 1, 2, 3, 4 and so forth.

    I do a little warm-up here.

    of what it looks like.

    Now, I get asked what I'm doing
    in the gym all the time.

    to pass a kettlebell

    back and forth between my hands."

    So, for this to work I've got to weigh it
    right before and right after the attempt.

    Twenty-pound kettlebell
    reads 20 pounds, 9.9 ounces.

    Walmart, you sold me
    a 9.9-ounce heavy kettlebell.

    But it's my 100th Guiness World Record,

    and so I decided I have to
    put 100 candles in my mouth.

    And so what I'm going to attempt to do now
    is put 100 candles in my mouth,

    light them on fire, and then
    they have to stay there for 30 seconds.
