0:08 - 0:11Who's ready for some entertainment?

0:11 - 0:14It's the entertainment
section of the show. -
0:14 - 0:18My life took a slight detour
three and half years ago -
0:18 - 0:23when I juggled
for six minutes, 34 seconds, -
0:23 - 0:25wearing a blindfold,
-
0:25 - 0:29breaking my very first
Guinness World Records title. -
0:29 - 0:31I did it to promote STEM Education -
-
0:31 - 0:33science, technology, engineering, math.
-
0:33 - 0:34I'm passionate about it,
-
0:34 - 0:36and you can see it's a tangible example,
-
0:36 - 0:38that you've set your mind to a goal,
-
0:38 - 0:41believe in yourself,
and pursue it with a passion, -
0:41 - 0:44you can accomplish virtually anything.
-
0:44 - 0:47You see, too many students,
they grow up and fail a math test, -
0:47 - 0:48struggle at science,
-
0:48 - 0:50and are told by somebody,
-
0:50 - 0:53"Hey, you should focus on something else
because you're not very good at this." -
0:53 - 0:54Well,
-
0:54 - 0:56I've read a fair amount of research
-
0:56 - 0:59that suggests that
this is simply not true. -
0:59 - 1:02When I was in second grade,
I tried out for the Gifted Program. -
1:02 - 1:06I took a test, and I failed.
I didn't get in -
1:06 - 1:08I wasn't smart enough.
-
1:08 - 1:09I tried out again in fifth grade,
-
1:09 - 1:12and I did get in but only for math.
-
1:12 - 1:13Does that mean I couldn't be good
-
1:13 - 1:15at science, history, art or literature?
-
1:15 - 1:18I kept working hard,
and by the time I finished high school -
1:18 - 1:21I was offered admission into MIT,
-
1:21 - 1:23where I got my electrical
engineering degree, -
1:23 - 1:25and I tell you it kicked my butt.
-
1:25 - 1:27But every time I was challenged,
-
1:27 - 1:28every time I failed,
-
1:28 - 1:31I used it as an opportunity
to improve and learn. -
1:31 - 1:35And who here has ever said,
"I don't remember names well." -
1:35 - 1:38"I've got to left feet, can't dance."
-
1:38 - 1:40"I'm not a great leader."
"I'm not a good speaker." -
1:40 - 1:42"I get angry easily."
-
1:42 - 1:44Something's holding you back.
-
1:44 - 1:45Well, I'm here to tell you
-
1:45 - 1:47that if you approach life
with a growth mindset, -
1:47 - 1:50this idea that
you can get better at anything, -
1:50 - 1:51you really can.
-
1:52 - 1:54All of these things can be learned,
-
1:55 - 1:55and developed,
-
1:55 - 1:57and improved upon,
-
1:57 - 2:01and I break a Guinness World Records
as an example of that. -
2:01 - 2:04So what happens when you approach life
with a growth mindset and grit? -
2:04 - 2:10Well, today I am going to attempt to break
my 100th Guiness World Record. -
2:10 - 2:15In fact, more accurately, it is my 98th,
99th and 100th Guiness World Record today. -
2:15 - 2:17Now, many of them are silly or esoteric,
-
2:17 - 2:22like I have the fastest mile run,
balancing a raw egg -
2:22 - 2:25on a spoon in my mouth.
-
2:26 - 2:28Eight minutes and two seconds.
-
2:28 - 2:30(Laughter)
-
2:30 - 2:33(Applause)
-
2:34 - 2:39Sure. It was difficult,
but not very many people try. -
2:39 - 2:41But there are some records
-
2:41 - 2:43I'm really, really excited
about and proud of, -
2:43 - 2:47I have the record for
most consecutive axe juggling catches. -
2:47 - 2:53Three three-pound axes juggled 839 times
before I finally fatigued and dropped one. -
2:53 - 2:57I have the record for longest duration
balancing a ladder on my chin. -
2:57 - 2:59The most bowling balls juggled.
-
2:59 - 3:01It's three.
-
3:01 - 3:02(Laughter)
-
3:02 - 3:07I've now juggled blindfolded,
for more than 22 minutes. -
3:07 - 3:10And then there was that holy grail record,
-
3:10 - 3:12that one I didn't think
I'd ever be able to break, -
3:12 - 3:15which was the most
juggling catches in one minute. -
3:16 - 3:17If I broke that one,
-
3:17 - 3:21I could become the fastest
juggler in the world. -
3:22 - 3:23But I didn't think I could break it.
-
3:23 - 3:27And I'd been juggling for a long time,
so I practiced and I got my baseline. -
3:27 - 3:29It was like, "OK, this is how fast I am,"
-
3:29 - 3:32and I practiced over the weeks,
and I didn't get much better. -
3:32 - 3:34So I said, "You know,
that's not going to happen. -
3:34 - 3:36There's no way I could do that."
-
3:36 - 3:38When I was in recess in grade school,
-
3:38 - 3:42I was the one that was picked last
for two-hand touch football -
3:42 - 3:44because I couldn't catch the ball!
-
3:44 - 3:47Who might've think
I can catch more balls in a minute -
3:47 - 3:50than anyone has ever
caught before while juggling? -
3:50 - 3:53There are also thousands
of professional jugglers. -
3:53 - 3:54They do this as their full-time job.
-
3:54 - 3:57I work at Cradlepoint,
a technology company here in Boise. -
3:57 - 3:58I've been there nine years.
-
3:58 - 4:02I have my lunches, evenings and weekends.
-
4:02 - 4:04I also have two kids under three years old
-
4:04 - 4:06and a very supportive wife.
-
4:06 - 4:07(Laughter)
-
4:09 - 4:11But after I broke
a few Guiness World Records, -
4:12 - 4:14I bought in.
-
4:14 - 4:17I developed a growth mindset
about anything in life. -
4:17 - 4:20You can improve on anything
with no hard upper limit. -
4:20 - 4:23So I started practicing
for this Guiness World Record, -
4:23 - 4:25not with the hope
that maybe I might break it, -
4:25 - 4:27but with the belief
I was going to break it; -
4:27 - 4:28I knew I was.
-
4:28 - 4:31It was just a matter of
when was it going to be? -
4:31 - 4:33Because I practiced every day for a year,
-
4:33 - 4:37and after a year of practice,
I got 428 catches in one minute, -
4:37 - 4:40becoming the fastest
juggler in the world. -
4:41 - 4:44(Applause)
-
4:44 - 4:45Thank you.
-
4:45 - 4:46But it didn't end there.
-
4:46 - 4:49Somebody else broke my record.
-
4:49 - 4:51So I had to go back
with a renewed passion and vigor, -
4:51 - 4:54and now I hold the record
for the world's fastest juggling, -
4:54 - 4:57with 556 catches in one minute.
-
4:57 - 5:00That's over nine and a quarter
catches per second. -
5:00 - 5:04And I thought seven was impossible.
-
5:06 - 5:083.5 years ago,
-
5:08 - 5:11if you'd have asked me when I broke
my first Guinness World Record -
5:11 - 5:13if I could possibly break 10 by today,
-
5:13 - 5:16I would have told you
that is a far stretch. -
5:16 - 5:20But if you ask me today if I think I can
break one Guinness World Record per week, -
5:21 - 5:24I would tell you yes, with confidence
-
5:24 - 5:26because I did it last year.
-
5:27 - 5:31So today, I'm going to attempt to break
three Guinness World Records live -
5:31 - 5:34in the next 10 minutes on stage.
-
5:34 - 5:37And so I'm going to welcome up
the witnesses and timekeepers -
5:37 - 5:40who are going to validate this attempt
along with my friend here Chris Knight, -
5:40 - 5:43and we are going to attempt
to break three world records. -
5:43 - 5:45The first one is
a partner record, Chris and I. -
5:45 - 5:50The record is most ping pong balls
caught in one minute -
5:51 - 5:52with chopsticks.
-
5:52 - 5:55(Laughter)
-
5:55 - 6:00When I first practiced
this record, I caught two. -
6:00 - 6:03The current record is 31;
-
6:03 - 6:0631 ping pong balls caught
with chopsticks in a minute. -
6:06 - 6:09Now, the rules simply state -
and Guinness has some very strict rules - -
6:09 - 6:14they state that you must throw
the ping pong ball, -
6:14 - 6:16catch it cleanly with the chopsticks,
-
6:16 - 6:19and then deposit -
it has to bounce once and only once - -
6:19 - 6:22catch cleanly, and then
deposit it in a container. -
6:22 - 6:24We're going to use
an upturned frisbee as our container. -
6:24 - 6:27Chris and I have one world record
together already: -
6:27 - 6:29most frisbee passes in one minute, at 110.
-
6:29 - 6:34I've got folks - to validate for Guinness,
I've got two people acting as timers, -
6:34 - 6:37two as witnesses, I've got all these
videos running, photographic evidence, -
6:37 - 6:39we'll submit it for approval later.
-
6:39 - 6:44The current record is 31; remember
the first time we practiced, I got two. -
6:44 - 6:45(Laughter)

6:45 - 6:46Alright.
-
6:46 - 6:50So timers are going say "Ready, set, go,"
and we'll begin the attempt. -
6:50 - 6:53I'm going to count out loud
to give you approximate where I am. -
6:53 - 6:55If it hits a finger,
I'm going to recount that number, -
6:55 - 6:59so if I say a number twice, you know
I'm just discounting one of the catches. -

8:35 - 8:38This next record combines a couple of
different skills I've worked on. -
8:38 - 8:41One is a lot of weight-lifting
activities I need to do -
8:41 - 8:45to juggle bowling balls and axes
and balance heavy objects on my chin. -
8:45 - 8:49So it combines strength training
with the fast touch, -
8:49 - 8:53the fast-twitch muscles I use
for speed juggling. -
8:53 - 8:54And so for this record
-
8:54 - 8:56I'm going to attempt
-
8:57 - 8:59the fastest time
-
9:00 - 9:05to pass a 20-pound weight
from hand to hand 100 times. -
9:05 - 9:08So I have a 20-pound
kettlebell right there. -
9:08 - 9:11I'll start with my right hand,
and I need it to pass into my left hand, -
9:11 - 9:15back to right hand, left, right 100 times.
-
9:15 - 9:18The time to beat is 18 seconds.
-
9:19 - 9:22If you do the math,
that is over five passes per second -
9:22 - 9:27times 20 pounds, so 100 pounds
of passed weight per second, -
9:27 - 9:31until I get to do 2000 pounds
of passed weight. -
9:33 - 9:35I'm going to be doing this very fast.
-
9:35 - 9:40It's going to be very difficult to count,
so I am going to count every other pass. -
9:42 - 9:44I'll start with my right hand
and go to my left hand, -
9:44 - 9:49and when it goes back to my right
I'll say 1, 2, 3, 4 and so forth. -
9:49 - 9:51I do a little warm-up here.
-
9:51 - 9:53This'll give you an idea
of what it looks like. -
9:53 - 9:56Now, I get asked what I'm doing
in the gym all the time. -
9:56 - 9:57(Laughter)

9:58 - 10:01"What are you training for?
Are you like a mountain climber?" -
10:01 - 10:03I say, "Well, I'm training
to pass a kettlebell -
10:03 - 10:06back and forth between my hands."
-
10:09 - 10:10Alright.
-
10:10 - 10:15So, for this to work I've got to weigh it
right before and right after the attempt. -
10:15 - 10:17I've got a scale here. We'll put it down.
-
10:17 - 10:22Twenty-pound kettlebell
reads 20 pounds, 9.9 ounces. -
10:22 - 10:26Walmart, you sold me
a 9.9-ounce heavy kettlebell. -
10:27 - 10:28Alright.

10:35 - 10:37It stopped recording.

10:40 - 10:43Alright. I'm going to reweigh it
just to make [sure]. -
10:43 - 10:44Here we go.

lit in the mouth. -

taper candles. -
13:17 - 13:20The current record is 41.

13:21 - 13:25But it's my 100th Guiness World Record,

13:25 - 13:28and so I decided I have to
put 100 candles in my mouth. -
13:28 - 13:32And so what I'm going to attempt to do now
is put 100 candles in my mouth, -
13:32 - 13:37light them on fire, and then
they have to stay there for 30 seconds. -
13:39 - 13:40(Exhales)

13:41 - 13:44Held up by nothing but my hands.

13:44 - 13:45Alright, so here we go.

13:45 - 13:49These are what the taper candles
look like right here. -
13:51 - 13:53Get them on film so we can
count them individually. -
13:53 - 13:56We counted them all very carefully before.

but I decided I was going to do it anyway. -
