Rolling Technique (Guitar Lesson TE-006) How to play
-
0:14 - 0:16Hello, how you doing? Justin here again.
-
0:16 - 0:18Uhm, I want to share with you a little
-
0:18 - 0:21cool technique called rolling today.
-
0:21 - 0:22Uhm, one of the biggest problems we have
-
0:22 - 0:24on guitar is if we get two notes that are
-
0:24 - 0:27in the same fret, but on different strings
-
0:27 - 0:29It can be quite hard to negotiate your
-
0:29 - 0:31fingers to get from one to the other
-
0:31 - 0:33quickly and smoothly
-
0:33 - 0:34So there's this little technique called
-
0:34 - 0:36rolling that I want to show you.
-
0:36 - 0:37Now, to really, we're going to use the
-
0:37 - 0:40A minor pentatonic scale to practice it.
-
0:40 - 0:41But, I need to show you the technique up
-
0:41 - 0:43nice and close so you can see exactly
-
0:43 - 0:44what's going on.
-
0:44 - 0:46Uhm, it's a little bit of a weird one.
-
0:46 - 0:48Uhm, but well worth it spending a little
-
0:48 - 0:50bit of time practicing it.
-
0:50 - 0:51Again, you shouldn't have to practice
-
0:51 - 0:52this forever, but if you give it a few
-
0:52 - 0:55weeks, you know if you're doing 5 minutes
-
0:55 - 0:57a day or whatever, give it a few weeks and
-
0:57 - 0:58you should sort it out.
-
0:58 - 1:00Don't go mad not being able to perfect it,
-
1:00 - 1:03just get the basic technique together, and
-
1:03 - 1:05then as you're learning songs that use it
-
1:05 - 1:06make sure that you're rolling the right
-
1:06 - 1:07way.
-
1:07 - 1:08It's particularly useful for a lot of the
-
1:08 - 1:10arpeggios when you start learning like A7
-
1:10 - 1:12and D7 arpeggios or whatever. You need
-
1:12 - 1:15to have this rolling technique well sorted
-
1:15 - 1:17So, let me go to a close up and show you
-
1:17 - 1:19what I'm talking about.
-
1:19 - 1:21Let's say we got this note here, and the
-
1:21 - 1:23next note that we want to play is this
-
1:23 - 1:25note here.
-
1:25 - 1:26Which these are both in the 5th fret with
-
1:26 - 1:27our first finger.
-
1:27 - 1:29Now, if you're playing that note and you
-
1:29 - 1:32have to lift your finger off and move it
-
1:32 - 1:33over to the other string. It takes a
-
1:33 - 1:35little bit too long.
-
1:35 - 1:36So, what we have to learn how to do is do
-
1:36 - 1:40this. There's only one note being sounded
-
1:40 - 1:42at a time.
-
1:42 - 1:44Now, the important part for this is, and
-
1:44 - 1:46I suggest you learn it this way first with
-
1:46 - 1:48just one finger.
-
1:48 - 1:50Put your first finger down, using the tip
-
1:50 - 1:52of your finger. When you flatten it, or
-
1:52 - 1:55roll it onto the next string, it's really
-
1:55 - 1:56important that just here the tip of your
-
1:56 - 2:00first finger mutes that D string.
-
2:00 - 2:02So that only the note C is sounding,
-
2:02 - 2:05which is this one here, the 5th fret.
-
2:05 - 2:07And when it goes back to the other one,
-
2:07 - 2:09it rolls onto the tip and now the third
-
2:09 - 2:12string is muted, so what I'm going to do
-
2:12 - 2:13now, you won't see my picking hand, I'm
-
2:13 - 2:15actually picking both the D string and the
-
2:15 - 2:17G string at the same time.
-
2:17 - 2:18The two center strings.
-
2:18 - 2:23And you'll...
-
2:23 - 2:25See the way it rolls from one to the other
-
2:25 - 2:27and then it rolls over like that and you
-
2:27 - 2:29can see the tip of the finger is now
-
2:29 - 2:33muting that D string, and now the
-
2:33 - 2:36underneath of the first finger is muting
-
2:36 - 2:37that other string. Let me get a better
-
2:37 - 2:39angle on that. That's better.
-
2:39 - 2:40Ok, so you can see here from the first
-
2:40 - 2:44finger, when it rolls over, you can see
-
2:44 - 2:50that the fourth string is actually up and
-
2:50 - 2:57then the third string is down, so you can
-
2:57 - 2:59And it works, of course, just as well for
-
2:59 - 3:01the third finger. If we do the third
-
3:01 - 3:09finger there. (Plays notes)
-
3:09 - 3:11And here we are for the exercise.
-
3:11 - 3:12So what we are going to be doing is
-
3:12 - 3:15starting here with the first finger and
-
3:15 - 3:17then roll it onto the next string.
-
3:17 - 3:20Same fret. Fifth fret roll onto the fifth
-
3:20 - 3:22fret. Now the next two notes, the minor
-
3:22 - 3:25pentatonic scale, roll on different frets.
-
3:25 - 3:27So you don't have to roll on that one, but
-
3:27 - 3:31then the next two strings you do.
-
3:31 - 3:38And the next two, third finger, roll
-
3:38 - 3:40point, roll it flat, point roll it flat,
-
3:40 - 3:43point, roll it flat, the next two are on
-
3:43 - 3:46separate frets.
-
3:46 - 3:46Point.
-
3:46 - 3:48Flat.
-
3:48 - 3:49Point.
-
3:49 - 3:53Flat.
-
3:53 - 3:54And they're exactly the same thing
-
3:54 - 3:57backwards.
-
3:57 - 3:58Flat.
-
3:58 - 4:00Point
-
4:00 - 4:01Flat
-
4:01 - 4:02Point
-
4:02 - 4:04Flat
-
4:04 - 4:06Point
-
4:06 - 4:07Don't need it
-
4:07 - 4:08Flat
-
4:08 - 4:10Point
-
4:10 - 4:20[Plays lick]
-
4:20 - 4:22Another cool trick, a variation, that you
-
4:22 - 4:24might want to try is doing this...
-
4:24 - 4:26I call it rounding it. You go
-
4:26 - 4:27point
-
4:27 - 4:27flat
-
4:27 - 4:30up
-
4:30 - 4:32up
-
4:32 - 4:33down
-
4:33 - 4:34up
-
4:34 - 4:35down
-
4:35 - 4:59[Plays guitar]
-
4:59 - 5:02I hope you had fun with that exercise.
-
5:02 - 5:03It is quite a good one.
-
5:03 - 5:05It's a difficult one to explain, even with
-
5:05 - 5:06the video, I think, but it's all about
-
5:06 - 5:07getting the difference between the tip of
-
5:07 - 5:09your finger and then moving it on to the
-
5:09 - 5:10flat.
-
5:10 - 5:11I'm sure with just a little bit of
-
5:11 - 5:13experimentation you'll have success at how
-
5:13 - 5:14to do it.
-
5:14 - 5:15It's not that killer difficult, but it's a
-
5:15 - 5:17real problem when you're trying to get
-
5:17 - 5:18your pentatonic scales, particularly, have
-
5:18 - 5:22a lot of notes on the same fret.
-
5:22 - 5:24It's kind of difficult, but it sounds the
-
5:24 - 5:33most, this sounds like it.
-
5:33 - 5:35Loads and loads of little sounds.
-
5:35 - 5:41[plays bluesy guitar]
-
5:41 - 5:45Flat, point. That's bending the 7th fret
-
5:45 - 5:48third string.
-
5:48 - 5:49And then playing the fifth fret of the
-
5:49 - 5:51second string onto the 5th fret of the 3rd
-
5:51 - 5:55string.
-
5:55 - 5:58Being able to get that movement between
-
5:58 - 6:01those two strings on the same fret is a
-
6:01 - 6:02really good idea.
-
6:02 - 6:04So uhm, have a bit of a play with that.
-
6:04 - 6:07Check out the tabs on the website, and see
-
6:07 - 6:10if you can't learn to roll properly.
