    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
    Thank you so much.
  • Not Synced
    Thank you.
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
    To Graça Machel and the Mandela family;
  • Not Synced
    To President Zuma and
  • Not Synced
    members of the government;
  • Not Synced
to heads of state and goverment past and present,
  • Not Synced
    distinguished guests.
  • Not Synced
    It is a singular honor
  • Not Synced
to be with you today to celebrate a life
  • Not Synced
    like no other.
  • Not Synced
To the people of South Africa
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
People of everyways and every walk of life
  • Not Synced
    the world thanks you
  • Not Synced
for sharing Nelson Mandela with us.
  • Not Synced
    His struggle was your struggle
  • Not Synced
    his triumph was your triumph,
  • Not Synced
    your dignity
  • Not Synced
and your hope found expression in his life
  • Not Synced
    and your freedom. Your democracy
  • Not Synced
    it's his cherished legacy
  • Not Synced
It is hard to eulogize any man
  • Not Synced
    to capture in words
  • Not Synced
not just the facts and the dates
  • Not Synced
that make a life, but the essential truth
  • Not Synced
of a person, the private joys,
  • Not Synced
    and sorrows, the quiet moments
  • Not Synced
the unique qualities that illuminate someone's soul.
  • Not Synced
How much harder to do so for a giant
  • Not Synced
of history who moved a nation towards justice
  • Not Synced
and in the process moved billions around the world
  • Not Synced
    More
  • Not Synced
during world war one fired from court orders of power
  • Not Synced
a boy raised herding cattle and
  • Not Synced
tutored by the elders of hix Mambu tribe
  • Not Synced
Madiba would emerge as the last great liberator
  • Not Synced
of the 20th century. Like Gandhi,
  • Not Synced
he would lead a resistence movement, a movement
  • Not Synced
that at the start had little prospect for success
  • Not Synced
    Like ..... he would get
  • Not Synced
...voice the claims of the oppressed
  • Not Synced
and a moral necessity of racial justice
  • Not Synced
    He would endure a brutal
  • Not Synced
imprisonment that began in the time of Kennedy and Krushiov
  • Not Synced
and reached the final days of the cold war
  • Not Synced
Emerging from prison without the force
  • Not Synced
of arms he would, like Abraham Lincoln, hold his country
  • Not Synced
together when it threaten to break apart
  • Not Synced
and like America's founding fathers he would erect
  • Not Synced
a constitutional order to preserve freedom for future generations
  • Not Synced
    A commitment to democracy
  • Not Synced
and rule of law, ratified not only by
  • Not Synced
his election but by his willingness to step down
  • Not Synced
from power after only one term.
  • Not Synced
    Given the sweep
  • Not Synced
of his life, the scope of his
  • Not Synced
accomplishments, the adoration that he so widely owned,
  • Not Synced
it's tempting, I think, to remember Nelson Mandela
  • Not Synced
as an icon, smiling and serene,
  • Not Synced
detached from the tawdry affairs of lessen men
  • Not Synced
    but Madiba himself strongly resisted
  • Not Synced
    such a lifeless portrait
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
    Instead, Madiba
  • Not Synced
insisted on sharing with us his doubts and his fears
  • Not Synced
his miscalculations along with his victories
  • Not Synced
"I am not a saint", he said
  • Not Synced
"unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps
  • Not Synced
    on trying".
  • Not Synced
It was precisely because he could admit to imperfection
  • Not Synced
because he could be so full of good humour
  • Not Synced
even mischief, despite the heavy burdens that he carried
  • Not Synced
    that we loved him so.
  • Not Synced
He was not a bust made of marble, he was a man of flesh and blood
  • Not Synced
    a son and a husband, a father
  • Not Synced
and a friend and that's why we learned
  • Not Synced
so much from him and that's why we can learn from him still
  • Not Synced
For nothing he achieved was inevitable
  • Not Synced
in the arch of his life we see a man
  • Not Synced
who earned his place in history through struggle
  • Not Synced
and shrewdness and persistance and faith
  • Not Synced
he tells us what is possible
  • Not Synced
not just in the pages of history books, but in our own lives
  • Not Synced
    as well.
  • Not Synced
Mandela showed us the power of action
  • Not Synced
of taking risks on behalf of our ideas
  • Not Synced
perhaps Mandela was right when he enherited
  • Not Synced
    a proud rebelliousness, a stabborn
  • Not Synced
sense of fairness from his father
  • Not Synced
and we know he shared with millions of black and coloured Southafricans
  • Not Synced
the anger born of a thousand slights
  • Not Synced
a thousand indignities, a thousand unremembered moments
  • Not Synced
a desire to fight the system that imprisoned
  • Not Synced
    my people, he said
  • Not Synced
like other early giants of the ANC
  • Not Synced
    the Zulus and the Tambos,
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
    Madiba disciplined his anger
  • Not Synced
and sharold his desire to fight into organization
  • Not Synced
    and platforms and strategies
  • Not Synced
for action, so men and women could stand up
  • Not Synced
    for the God given dignity
  • Not Synced
moreover he accepted the consequences of his actions
  • Not Synced
knowing that standing up to powerful entrance and injustice
  • Not Synced
    carries a price
  • Not Synced
I fought against white domination I fought black
  • Not Synced
    domination
  • Not Synced
I cherished the idea of a democratic and free society
  • Not Synced
in which all persons live together in harmony and
  • Not Synced
equal opportunities, it is an ideal which I hope to live
  • Not Synced
for and to achieve but if needs be it's an ideal
  • Not Synced
for which I am prepared to die.
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
Mandela taught us the power of action
  • Not Synced
but he also taught us the power of ideas
  • Not Synced
the importance of reason and arguments
  • Not Synced
the need to study not only those who you
  • Not Synced
agree with but also those you don't agree with
  • Not Synced
he understood that ideas cannot be contained by prison walls
  • Not Synced
    extinguished by a sniper's bullet
  • Not Synced
he turned his trial into an endowment of aparthaid
  • Not Synced
because of his eloquence and his passion
  • Not Synced
but also because of his training as an advocate
  • Not Synced
he used decades of prison to sharpen his arguments
  • Not Synced
but also to spread his thirst for knowledge to others
  • Not Synced
in the movement and he learned the language and the customs
  • Not Synced
of his oppressors so that one day he might better convey
  • Not Synced
to them how their own freedom depend upon his.
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
Mandela has demonstrated that action and ideas are not enough
  • Not Synced
no matter high they must also
  • Not Synced
be ciselled in the laws and institutions
  • Not Synced
he was practical, testing his beliefs
  • Not Synced
against the hard surfice of circumstance
  • Not Synced
    and history, on core
  • Not Synced
principles he was unyielding which is why he could rebuff
  • Not Synced
offers of unconditional release reminding the aparthaid regime his
  • Not Synced
that prisoners cannot enter into contracts
  • Not Synced
but as he showed in painstaking negotiations
  • Not Synced
to transfer power and draft new laws he was
  • Not Synced
not afraid to compromise for the sake of a larger goal.
  • Not Synced
And because he was not only a leader of a movement but a skilful politician
  • Not Synced
the constitution that emerged was worthy of this multi-racial
  • Not Synced
democracy, true to his vision of laws that
  • Not Synced
protect minority as well as majority rights and the
  • Not Synced
    precious freedoms of every Southafrican.
  • Not Synced
    And finally Mandela uderstood
  • Not Synced
the ties that bind the human spirit.
  • Not Synced
There is a word in Southafrican
  • Not Synced
    ubuntu
  • Not Synced
    [cheers]
  • Not Synced
    a word that captures
  • Not Synced
    Mandela's greatest gift: his recognition
  • Not Synced
that we are all bound together in ways that are invisible
  • Not Synced
to the eye, that there is a ones to humanity
  • Not Synced
that we achieve ourselves by sharing
  • Not Synced
ourselves with others and caring those around us
  • Not Synced
we can't never know how much of this
  • Not Synced
sense was innate in him or how much was shaped
  • Not Synced
in a dark and solitary cell.
  • Not Synced
But we remember the gestures large and small
  • Not Synced
    introducing his jailers as
  • Not Synced
honored guests at an inaguration, taking a pitch
  • Not Synced
    in a spring by uniform
  • Not Synced
turning his family's heartbreak into a call that can run
  • Not Synced
    HIV-AIDS that reveal the depths
  • Not Synced
of his empathy and his understanding.
  • Not Synced
He not only embodied truth he taught millions
  • Not Synced
to find that truth within themselves.
  • Not Synced
It took a man like Madiba to free
  • Not Synced
not just the prisoner but the jailer as well
  • Not Synced
to show that you must trust
  • Not Synced
others so that they may trust you
  • Not Synced
teach that reconciliation is not a matter of ignoring
  • Not Synced
a cruel past but a means of confronting it
  • Not Synced
with an inclusion and generosity and truth
  • Not Synced
    He changed laws
  • Not Synced
    but he also changed hearts
  • Not Synced
for the people of South Africa
  • Not Synced
    for those he inspired
  • Not Synced
around the globe but he was passing ....
  • Not Synced
a time of morning a time to celebrate a heroic life
  • Not Synced
but I believe it should also prompt in each of us a time
  • Not Synced
    for self-reflection with honesty
  • Not Synced
regardless of our station or circumstance
  • Not Synced
we must ask: "How well have I applied
  • Not Synced
his lessons in my own life.
  • Not Synced
    It's a question I ask myself
  • Not Synced
as a man and as a president
  • Not Synced
we know that white South Africa
  • Not Synced
and the United States have overcome centuries of racial
  • Not Synced
    subjugation as was
  • Not Synced
it was true here it took sacrifice, the sacrifices of countless people
  • Not Synced
known and unknown to see the dawn of a new day
  • Not Synced
    Michelle and I are beneficiaries
  • Not Synced
    of that struggle
  • Not Synced
    but in America
  • Not Synced
and in South Africa and in countries all over
  • Not Synced
the globe we cannot allow our progress to cloud the fact
  • Not Synced
that our work is not yet done
  • Not Synced
The struggles that follow the victory
  • Not Synced
    formal equality or universal franchise
  • Not Synced
may not be as filled with drama and moral clarity as those
  • Not Synced
.... that came before but they are not less important
  • Not Synced
for around the world today we still see
  • Not Synced
children suffering from hunger and disease, we still
  • Not Synced
see run down schools, we still see young people
  • Not Synced
without prospects for the future, around the world
  • Not Synced
today men and women are still imprisoned for their political
  • Not Synced
believes and are still persecuted for what they look like
  • Not Synced
how they worship and who they love and it is still happening today
  • Not Synced
    And so we
  • Not Synced
too must act on behalf of justice
  • Not Synced
we too must act on behalf of peace
  • Not Synced
There are too many people that too happily embrace
  • Not Synced
Madiba's legacy of racial reconciliation but
  • Not Synced
passionately resist even modest reforms, they would challange
  • Not Synced
... of property and bringing in equality
  • Not Synced
there are too many leaders who claim solidarity
  • Not Synced
with Madiba's struggle for freedom but do not tollerate
  • Not Synced
the same for their own people
  • Not Synced
and there are too many of us
  • Not Synced
too many of us on the side lines, confortable
  • Not Synced
    in complacency or cynicism
  • Not Synced
when our voices must be heard, the question
  • Not Synced
    we face today
  • Not Synced
had a promotive quality and justice, how to uphold
  • Not Synced
freedom and human rights, how to end conflict and
  • Not Synced
sectarian war, these things do not have
  • Not Synced
easy answers, but there were no easy answers
  • Not Synced
in front of that child born in
  • Not Synced
in World War I, Nelson Mandela reminds us that
  • Not Synced
it always seems impossible until it is done
  • Not Synced
South Africa shows that it is true
  • Not Synced
South Africa shows we can change, that we can
  • Not Synced
choose a world defined not by our differences but by our common
  • Not Synced
hopes, we can choose a world defined not by conflict
  • Not Synced
but by peace and justice and opportunity
  • Not Synced
    We will never see
  • Not Synced
the likes of Nelson Mandela again
  • Not Synced
well I may say that the young people of Africa
  • Not Synced
that the young people around the world
  • Not Synced
you too can make his life's work
  • Not Synced
    your own.
  • Not Synced
Over thirty years ago, whilst still a student
  • Not Synced
    I learned of Nelson Mandela
  • Not Synced
and the struggles taking place in this beautiful land
  • Not Synced
and it stured something in me
  • Not Synced
it woke me up to my responsibilities to other
  • Not Synced
and to myself and send me into an improbable journey
  • Not Synced
    that finds me here today
  • Not Synced
and while I will always fall short of Madiba's
  • Not Synced
example he makes me want to be a better man
  • Not Synced
    he speaks
  • Not Synced
to what is best inside us
  • Not Synced
after this great liberator is let to rest
  • Not Synced
and we return to our cities and
  • Not Synced
and villages and rejoined our daily routine
  • Not Synced
    let us search for his
  • Not Synced
strength, let us search for his
  • Not Synced
largeness of spirit somewhere inside of ourselves
  • Not Synced
and when the night grows dark
  • Not Synced
when injustice weights heavy on our hearts
  • Not Synced
when our best laid plans seem out of reach
  • Not Synced
    let us think of Madiba
  • Not Synced
and the words that brought him comfort within the 4 walls
  • Not Synced
of his cell: "It matters not
  • Not Synced
how streight the gate, how charged
  • Not Synced
    the punishment, the scroll
  • Not Synced
I am the master of my fate,
  • Not Synced
I am the captain of my soul,
  • Not Synced
what magnificent soul it was. We will miss him deeply
  • Not Synced
May God bless the memory of Nelson Mandela.
  • Not Synced
May God bless the people of South Africa.

  • There are a lot of mistakes and ommisions in the original transcrip, for example:

"during world war one fired from court orders of power" :-)

    should be:

"Born during World War I, far from the corridors of power"

I hope it hasn't been translated to other languages from this version of original transcript.

Please, take a look at this transcript:
