Hi, this is Susan. I want to welcome you to this Pathway and explain the organization of it. The goal of this Pathway is to begin to see teaching and learning with a lens of Universal Design for Learning. So to look at things that are familiar to us, but to look at them in a new way. Every single module is organized in the same way and every single module is going to be directed by you and your team. You will not see me again, so the learning plan is yours to make. In Canvas, you will see a learning plan "suggestion" for a meeting agenda and I am going to go through that now. The first thing on the plan is that you'll review the goal; you'll find a goal in every module. And the goal is one piece of Universal Design for Learning. The second thing you'll find is a collection of resources that are related to that goal. The resources are not designed for you to work through sequentially or even for you to work through entirely. It's really just a collection for you to pick from, make decisions, choose what works for you. You can look at the resources before the meeting, during the meeting, after the meeting --- again, customize this so it works for you and your team. And then during your team meeting there are a couple of options (and sometimes more than a couple of options) in every module for you to watch a very short video of classroom practice. I want to make a note about the classroom practice videos. Some of them are videos of classroom practice and they're narrated by people who have been thinking deeply about Universal Design for Learning and are highlighting the critical features of UDL as they reflect and discuss what they see. But most of the videos are not that; most of the videos are narrated by educators who are thinking deeply about teaching and learning but not articulating Universal Design for Learning. So that is an opportunity for us to think about and try to see Universal Design for Learning in practice and UDL can sometimes be invisible because a lot of times UDL is the proactive planning, it's the anticipation of barriers and then the proactive design of options to remove those barriers. So to help us make learning, to make UDL more visible, you'll find a graphic organizer. It's linked separately in Canvas (right in the Pathway). Also, you'll find a link to it in the learning plan. It's called "Seeing Classroom Practice with a UDL Lens". And it's a set of questions for you to consider as you're watching the video. It's definitely not a scavenger hunt; you're not going to find all things in all videos. It really is, instead, a list of things to pay attention to. So as we look at video of classroom practice, we might notice that the teacher provided multiple means of action and expression ---- different ways for learners to engage with each other during learning --- and we may not have said that (I wouldn't have said that, perhaps, before I learned about UDL. I would have just said, "She had kids doing things in a variety of ways".) So we'll adopt some of the language of UDL so we can begin to have conversations about it and hopefully that graphic organizer will help you to see Universal Design for Learning in video of classroom practice. You'll have a discussion in your team meeting, using your notes: What did you see? What connections did you find to UDL? What else did you notice? What else did you wonder about? And then, finally, if something emerges from your discussion or you do some work as a team that you think would be fun to share with others in the Network, there are some options listed in Canvas --- excuse me ---- options listed on the learning plan, for how to do that. Please feel free to let us know (Bill, Melissa, Niel or I) if this Pathway is not working for you, if you need more direction or support, and we're happy to provide that. Otherwise, enjoy, and I will see you soon.
