Applied Fingerstyle Patterns (Guitar Lesson BC-193) Guitar for beginners Stage 9

  • 0:08 - 0:11
Hello, Justin here, how are you doing?
  • 0:11 - 0:13
In this lesson we are going to be checking out
  • 0:13 - 0:16
some really cool fingerstyle picking patterns
  • 0:16 - 0:18
just kind of basic ones you might use
  • 0:18 - 0:20
for your normal kind of pop ballad
  • 0:20 - 0:25
Hopefully you've done your finger picking exercise
  • 0:25 - 0:26
that we talked about in the last stage
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    just doing thumb-1-2-3
  • 0:28 - 0:31
the fingers' positions are going to be the same
  • 0:31 - 0:34
so make sure you get your thumb here...
  • 0:34 - 0:36
In this case I'm just gonna actually start here
  • 0:36 - 0:38
on the sixth string... Thumb on the sixth string,
  • 0:38 - 0:39
first finger on the third string,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    second finger on second string,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
and third finger on the thinnest string
  • 0:44 - 0:46
now, the first pattern we are going to check out
  • 0:46 - 0:49
just playing a G chord with my left hand
  • 0:49 - 0:52
we are starting here with the thumb on the sixth string
  • 0:52 - 0:54
first finger on the third string,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
second finger on the second string,
  • 0:56 - 1:00
and third finger on the thinnest string
  • 1:00 - 1:02
and the pattern we are going to be checking out today
  • 1:02 - 1:11
    goes like this : it's thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
  • 1:11 - 1:19
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
  • 1:19 - 1:24
    . . .
  • 1:24 - 1:26
and we are going to do this really slowly together
  • 1:26 - 1:28
so get your G chord on with the left hand
  • 1:28 - 1:30
and lets have a little bit of a go here
  • 1:30 - 1:35
here we go, nice and slow, 3.. 4..
  • 1:35 - 1:51
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
  • 1:51 - 1:58
    keep going... 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
  • 1:58 - 2:01
and the trick here is just to do it over and over again
  • 2:01 - 2:04
so it becomes a little bit automated
  • 2:06 - 2:07
just so you think about it,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
at some point in the near future
  • 2:09 - 2:13
you gonna start changing chords while you're doing this
  • 2:13 - 2:20
the big trick is just to keep doing it over and over again
  • 2:22 - 2:24
once you got the pattern kind of under your fingers
  • 2:24 - 2:26
a good idea is to speed it up a little bit
  • 2:26 - 2:28
maybe getting it up to a speed kind of like
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    . . .
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
  • 2:35 - 2:42
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
  • 2:42 - 2:44
now, all of those were the G chord
  • 2:44 - 2:46
with the thumb playing the bass note there
  • 2:46 - 2:48
which is on the sixth string
  • 2:48 - 2:51
a really nice little sequence to practice is
  • 2:51 - 2:56
    G - D - C - D
  • 2:56 - 2:58
this is a really good one,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
aside from the fact that is actually sounds going nice
  • 3:00 - 3:01
it means that your thumb is moving
  • 3:01 - 3:03
from the sixth string for the G
  • 3:03 - 3:06
over to the fourth string for the D chord
  • 3:06 - 3:08
to the fifth string for the C chord
  • 3:08 - 3:11
and back to the fourth string for the D chord
  • 3:11 - 3:13
so really, your thumb is getting a bit of workout
  • 3:13 - 3:15
what you do is to probably just play that pattern
  • 3:15 - 3:17
once on each chord something like this...
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    so G
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    to D
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    to C
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    to D
  • 3:32 - 3:35
very nice little sequence this one
  • 3:35 - 3:38
you could even say it's a wonderful sequence
  • 3:38 - 3:47
    . . .
  • 3:47 - 3:49
so that's the first little chord sequence
  • 3:49 - 3:50
I want you to try and get through
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    G - D - C - D
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    use that little pattern: thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
  • 3:56 - 3:58
really, really nice, it's on the website
  • 3:58 - 4:00
it can definitely help to say it,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
it can definitely help to see it as well
  • 4:02 - 4:04
so maybe write down on a piece of paper:
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 ...
  • 4:06 - 4:08
would be a good thing to have in front of you
  • 4:08 - 4:10
you can kind of almost use it as a little trigger
  • 4:10 - 4:13
just to see it and do it as your eyes follow along
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    so maybe check that out
  • 4:15 - 4:16
Now I wanna do another little pattern with you
  • 4:16 - 4:19
this one is this, I'm gonna do it on a C chord,
  • 4:19 - 4:23
    and this is thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
  • 4:27 - 4:38
    . . .
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    very nice little sequence again
  • 4:40 - 4:43
so you can apply this lots of different ways of course
  • 4:43 - 4:45
you might do it on an E minor
  • 4:45 - 4:48
so thumb will be on the sixth string
  • 4:48 - 4:56
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
  • 4:56 - 4:58
then maybe to a C chord
  • 4:58 - 5:05
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    to a D chord
  • 5:08 - 5:12
    . . .
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    E minor
  • 5:14 - 5:18
    . . .
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    C
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    . . .
  • 5:21 - 5:23
of course remembering that with the C
  • 5:23 - 5:25
the thumb is now on the fifth string
  • 5:25 - 5:29
    D. And now the thumb is on the fourth string
  • 5:29 - 5:35
    . . .
  • 5:35 - 5:38
so that's also a really, really nice little sequence
  • 5:38 - 5:40
the last one I want to explain to you here
  • 5:40 - 5:42
is we kind of looked at it last time,
  • 5:42 - 5:44
but this one I want to describe it to you as being in six
  • 5:44 - 5:47
now you could think of it as kind of two triplets,
  • 5:47 - 5:52
but really what we are going for is 1-2-3-4-5-6
  • 5:52 - 5:53
so if we just do it on the D chord,
  • 5:53 - 5:55
we are just going up and down so going
  • 5:55 - 6:00
    thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1
  • 6:00 - 6:05
    like 1-2-3-4-5-6...
  • 6:05 - 6:11
    then to G: 1-2-3-4-5-6
  • 6:11 - 6:16
    D: 1-2-3-4-5-6
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    G
  • 6:20 - 6:22
it's a very nice little sequence this one
  • 6:22 - 6:25
and you can work it through lots of different chords
  • 6:25 - 6:27
now we've just gone to an E minor
  • 6:27 - 6:32
maybe go to an A, now we've got a fifth string root
  • 6:32 - 6:36
we can go back to E minor even
  • 6:36 - 6:37
we can even go, maybe something radical
  • 6:37 - 6:40
we've just gone to C chord
  • 6:40 - 6:43
with the thumb moving over to the fifth string
  • 6:43 - 6:46
the big key here is making sure that your thumb knows
  • 6:46 - 6:48
which the bass note is for each of the chords
  • 6:48 - 6:50
so it knows whether to pluck the sixth string,
  • 6:50 - 6:52
the fifth string or the fourth string
  • 6:52 - 6:55
so have a play around with those three patterns
  • 6:55 - 6:56
see if you can apply them to some songs
  • 6:56 - 6:59
there's a list of songs that use them on the website
  • 6:59 - 7:00
but just use your ears as well,
  • 7:00 - 7:03
you might try putting the fingerstyle on a song
  • 7:03 - 7:04
    that's not normally fingerstyle
  • 7:04 - 7:07
why not, remember if it sounds good, it is good
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    so experiment
  • 7:08 - 7:10
and see what cool things you can come up with
  • 7:10 - 7:12
you might end up writing your own tune even
  • 7:12 - 7:13
    wow, cool!
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    so, have fun with that,
  • 7:15 - 7:17
I shall see you for another lesson really soon
  • 7:17 - 7:21
take care of yourselves, bye bye
