Applied Fingerstyle Patterns (Guitar Lesson BC-193) Guitar for beginners Stage 9
-
0:08 - 0:11Hello, Justin here, how are you doing?
-
0:11 - 0:13In this lesson we are going to be checking out
-
0:13 - 0:16some really cool fingerstyle picking patterns
-
0:16 - 0:18just kind of basic ones you might use
-
0:18 - 0:20for your normal kind of pop ballad
-
0:20 - 0:25Hopefully you've done your finger picking exercise
-
0:25 - 0:26that we talked about in the last stage
-
0:26 - 0:28just doing thumb-1-2-3
-
0:28 - 0:31the fingers' positions are going to be the same
-
0:31 - 0:34so make sure you get your thumb here...
-
0:34 - 0:36In this case I'm just gonna actually start here
-
0:36 - 0:38on the sixth string... Thumb on the sixth string,
-
0:38 - 0:39first finger on the third string,
-
0:39 - 0:42second finger on second string,
-
0:42 - 0:44and third finger on the thinnest string
-
0:44 - 0:46now, the first pattern we are going to check out
-
0:46 - 0:49just playing a G chord with my left hand
-
0:49 - 0:52we are starting here with the thumb on the sixth string
-
0:52 - 0:54first finger on the third string,
-
0:54 - 0:56second finger on the second string,
-
0:56 - 1:00and third finger on the thinnest string
-
1:00 - 1:02and the pattern we are going to be checking out today
-
1:02 - 1:11goes like this : it's thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
-
1:11 - 1:19thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
-
1:19 - 1:24. . .
-
1:24 - 1:26and we are going to do this really slowly together
-
1:26 - 1:28so get your G chord on with the left hand
-
1:28 - 1:30and lets have a little bit of a go here
-
1:30 - 1:35here we go, nice and slow, 3.. 4..
-
1:35 - 1:51thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
-
1:51 - 1:58keep going... 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
-
1:58 - 2:01and the trick here is just to do it over and over again
-
2:01 - 2:04so it becomes a little bit automated
-
2:06 - 2:07just so you think about it,
-
2:07 - 2:09at some point in the near future
-
2:09 - 2:13you gonna start changing chords while you're doing this
-
2:13 - 2:20the big trick is just to keep doing it over and over again
-
2:22 - 2:24once you got the pattern kind of under your fingers
-
2:24 - 2:26a good idea is to speed it up a little bit
-
2:26 - 2:28maybe getting it up to a speed kind of like
-
2:28 - 2:31. . .
-
2:31 - 2:351 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
2:35 - 2:42thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
-
2:42 - 2:44now, all of those were the G chord
-
2:44 - 2:46with the thumb playing the bass note there
-
2:46 - 2:48which is on the sixth string
-
2:48 - 2:51a really nice little sequence to practice is
-
2:51 - 2:56G - D - C - D
-
2:56 - 2:58this is a really good one,
-
2:58 - 3:00aside from the fact that is actually sounds going nice
-
3:00 - 3:01it means that your thumb is moving
-
3:01 - 3:03from the sixth string for the G
-
3:03 - 3:06over to the fourth string for the D chord
-
3:06 - 3:08to the fifth string for the C chord
-
3:08 - 3:11and back to the fourth string for the D chord
-
3:11 - 3:13so really, your thumb is getting a bit of workout
-
3:13 - 3:15what you do is to probably just play that pattern
-
3:15 - 3:17once on each chord something like this...
-
3:17 - 3:21so G
-
3:21 - 3:24to D
-
3:24 - 3:28to C
-
3:28 - 3:32to D
-
3:32 - 3:35very nice little sequence this one
-
3:35 - 3:38you could even say it's a wonderful sequence
-
3:38 - 3:47. . .
-
3:47 - 3:49so that's the first little chord sequence
-
3:49 - 3:50I want you to try and get through
-
3:50 - 3:52G - D - C - D
-
3:52 - 3:56use that little pattern: thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2
-
3:56 - 3:58really, really nice, it's on the website
-
3:58 - 4:00it can definitely help to say it,
-
4:00 - 4:02it can definitely help to see it as well
-
4:02 - 4:04so maybe write down on a piece of paper:
-
4:04 - 4:06thumb - 1 - 2 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 ...
-
4:06 - 4:08would be a good thing to have in front of you
-
4:08 - 4:10you can kind of almost use it as a little trigger
-
4:10 - 4:13just to see it and do it as your eyes follow along
-
4:13 - 4:15so maybe check that out
-
4:15 - 4:16Now I wanna do another little pattern with you
-
4:16 - 4:19this one is this, I'm gonna do it on a C chord,
-
4:19 - 4:23and this is thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
-
4:23 - 4:27thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
-
4:27 - 4:38. . .
-
4:38 - 4:40very nice little sequence again
-
4:40 - 4:43so you can apply this lots of different ways of course
-
4:43 - 4:45you might do it on an E minor
-
4:45 - 4:48so thumb will be on the sixth string
-
4:48 - 4:56thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
-
4:56 - 4:58then maybe to a C chord
-
4:58 - 5:05thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 3
-
5:05 - 5:08to a D chord
-
5:08 - 5:12. . .
-
5:12 - 5:14E minor
-
5:14 - 5:18. . .
-
5:18 - 5:20C
-
5:20 - 5:21. . .
-
5:21 - 5:23of course remembering that with the C
-
5:23 - 5:25the thumb is now on the fifth string
-
5:25 - 5:29D. And now the thumb is on the fourth string
-
5:29 - 5:35. . .
-
5:35 - 5:38so that's also a really, really nice little sequence
-
5:38 - 5:40the last one I want to explain to you here
-
5:40 - 5:42is we kind of looked at it last time,
-
5:42 - 5:44but this one I want to describe it to you as being in six
-
5:44 - 5:47now you could think of it as kind of two triplets,
-
5:47 - 5:52but really what we are going for is 1-2-3-4-5-6
-
5:52 - 5:53so if we just do it on the D chord,
-
5:53 - 5:55we are just going up and down so going
-
5:55 - 6:00thumb - 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 1
-
6:00 - 6:05like 1-2-3-4-5-6...
-
6:05 - 6:11then to G: 1-2-3-4-5-6
-
6:11 - 6:16D: 1-2-3-4-5-6
-
6:16 - 6:20G
-
6:20 - 6:22it's a very nice little sequence this one
-
6:22 - 6:25and you can work it through lots of different chords
-
6:25 - 6:27now we've just gone to an E minor
-
6:27 - 6:32maybe go to an A, now we've got a fifth string root
-
6:32 - 6:36we can go back to E minor even
-
6:36 - 6:37we can even go, maybe something radical
-
6:37 - 6:40we've just gone to C chord
-
6:40 - 6:43with the thumb moving over to the fifth string
-
6:43 - 6:46the big key here is making sure that your thumb knows
-
6:46 - 6:48which the bass note is for each of the chords
-
6:48 - 6:50so it knows whether to pluck the sixth string,
-
6:50 - 6:52the fifth string or the fourth string
-
6:52 - 6:55so have a play around with those three patterns
-
6:55 - 6:56see if you can apply them to some songs
-
6:56 - 6:59there's a list of songs that use them on the website
-
6:59 - 7:00but just use your ears as well,
-
7:00 - 7:03you might try putting the fingerstyle on a song
-
7:03 - 7:04that's not normally fingerstyle
-
7:04 - 7:07why not, remember if it sounds good, it is good
-
7:07 - 7:08so experiment
-
7:08 - 7:10and see what cool things you can come up with
-
7:10 - 7:12you might end up writing your own tune even
-
7:12 - 7:13wow, cool!
-
7:13 - 7:15so, have fun with that,
-
7:15 - 7:17I shall see you for another lesson really soon
-
7:17 - 7:21take care of yourselves, bye bye
