12 Bar Blues Style (Guitar Lesson BC-183) Guitar for beginners Stage 8
-
0:05 - 0:07Hi, how you doin'? Justin here.
-
0:07 - 0:11In this lesson today, we're going to be checking out
a traditional 12 bar blues, -
0:11 - 0:15using a chunka chunka rhythm.
Now a chunka chunka rhythm is just a word -
0:15 - 0:19that my teacher taught me to describe
this shuffle which we talked about earlier, -
0:19 - 0:24where we talked about like strumming it,
now we're doing like a proper -
0:24 - 0:2812 bar blues style.
So let me just play it for you first once through. -
0:28 - 0:31I'll play it in a medium up tempo
just so it doesn't take too long -
0:31 - 0:34but we're going to be taking through it nice and slowly.
So this is what it sounds like. -
0:34 - 0:363, 4,
-
0:36 - 1:06. . .
-
1:06 - 1:10That's it, straight ahead 12 bar blues.
You can hear chunka chunka -
1:10 - 1:13chunka, chunka,
is where you get that little rhythm from. -
1:13 - 1:17So it's pretty straight forward.
The big thing that you have to deal with here -
1:17 - 1:20is that you're playing two strings at a time.
-
1:20 - 1:22Now we're going to start off by going to a close up of this
-
1:22 - 1:26in just a second, but we're just going to be using
one finger. It's going to be on the note E, -
1:26 - 1:29and we're going to be playing two strings
on this very first chord. -
1:29 - 1:34It's going to be an A chord. We're going to be playing
the open A string, which is the 5th string. -
1:34 - 1:37Hopefully you know that by now, because
you know your open string note names, don't you? -
1:37 - 1:42And also the 4th string, which is the one with the note E,
-
1:42 - 1:441st finger playing the 2nd fret of the 4th string.
-
1:44 - 1:50and we're going to play those two notes (plays)
then again (plays) -
1:50 - 1:53and then our 3rd finger is going to go down
on the same string -
1:53 - 1:57as the 1st finger
and your plucking the same two notes. -
1:57 - 2:00So remember while we're on the A chord,
which is the first thing we're going to look at -
2:00 - 2:04in a second on the close up, you just
want to be playing the 5th string -
2:04 - 2:08and the 4th string, and you're going to be using all
-
2:08 - 2:12down picks for this whole exercise.
OK, let's go to a close up. -
2:15 - 2:19So here we go, here's the 1st finger
in the 2nd fret of the 4th string -
2:19 - 2:24and we're going to be playing
the open A string and this note (plays) -
2:24 - 2:28and the 1st finger kind of lifts up a little bit
to make sure those other strings -
2:28 - 2:32underneath it are a bit muted.
It doesn't really matter so much on acoustic guitar -
2:32 - 2:36but maybe on electric guitar it will make a difference,
so you might as well get in a habit of muting -
2:36 - 2:39those strings as well while you're at it.
So you're going to do two picks on this -
2:39 - 2:41. . .
-
2:41 - 2:43then your 3rd finger is going to go down two frets further
-
2:43 - 2:47which is 4th fret on the same string
that your 1st finger is on, -
2:47 - 2:49which is of course the fourth string.
-
2:49 - 2:51. . .
-
2:51 - 2:56Then we go back again, 1st finger (plays),
3rd finger (plays). -
2:56 - 3:001st finger, 3rd finger down. (plays)
-
3:00 - 3:03Now I just played one bar, so the count for that will be
-
3:03 - 3:091 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
3:09 - 3:11So that will just be one bar.
-
3:11 - 3:14If you look at the sheet music for this,
you will probably notice -
3:14 - 3:17that we do 4 bars of A, maybe you will even remember
-
3:17 - 3:20the sheet music for this,
from playing the 12 bar blues -
3:20 - 3:22with a shuffle rhythm before, with the strumming.
-
3:22 - 3:25Hopefully you remember at least the pattern,
the order of the chords. -
3:25 - 3:29If not, you need to check out the sheet music
on the web site, then get back to here. -
3:29 - 3:33So here we go. Now we're going to do this A chord
for 4 bars. So we have -
3:33 - 3:381 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
3:38 - 3:422nd bar and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
3:42 - 3:473rd bar, and 2 and 3 and 4,
-
3:47 - 3:53and 4th bar, and 2 and 3 and 4 and.
-
3:53 - 3:56Now we go to the D. What we're going to do,
is simply move our 1st finger over, -
3:56 - 4:01like toward the ground one string,
and the note the 3rd finger will go on -
4:01 - 4:03will also move toward the ground one string.
-
4:03 - 4:04But whenever we change strings,
-
4:04 - 4:10we start with just the 1st finger on and that's it.
And we do two bars now on the D. -
4:10 - 4:13Of course the strings that we pick have also changed.
-
4:13 - 4:16We're now picking the middle two strings.
Here we go for the D -
4:16 - 4:21(plays) 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
4:21 - 4:251 and 2 and 3 and 4,
-
4:25 - 4:31and back to A, and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
4:31 - 4:351 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
4:35 - 4:401, now to E, we've moved 1st finger up
toward the ceiling one string -
4:40 - 4:44so it's now on the 5th string
and we're plucking the open E string -
4:44 - 4:48the lowest, fattest, thickest string
and this note here -
4:48 - 4:50with the 1st finger.
We do 1 bar on E, -
4:50 - 4:571 and 2 and 3 and 4 and,
big jump all the way to D, -
4:57 - 5:051 and 2 and 3 and 4 and,
1, we're back on A now, 3, and, -
5:05 - 5:12then down to E again, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
5:12 - 5:16Now it's really important here, that you
keep that 1st finger back in that 2nd fret, -
5:16 - 5:21try to avoid going 1 and 2 and 3,
this kind of thing. -
5:21 - 5:26That's really bad form. Try and get those fingers
nicely spread out all of the way through. -
5:27 - 5:29So I'm going to play now,
once through this whole thing -
5:29 - 5:32really slowly to let you have a go
at playing along with it -
5:32 - 5:37Really try to get the feeling for this
'chunka chunka chunka chunka'-feeling; the shuffle. -
5:37 - 5:40Because it's an integral part of playing this style.
-
5:40 - 5:43Also make sure you are picking just the right strings
-
5:43 - 5:47It's kind of difficult sometimes to make sure
you're picking the open string, -
5:47 - 5:51as well as the fretted note.
And partly this is because your pick hand -
5:51 - 5:53has got quite used to playing where your finger is,
-
5:53 - 5:57and suddenly you have to pick on the
thick string above, -
5:57 - 6:01physically above the string your finger is on.
So this hand is kind of, -
6:01 - 6:04if it's developing a sense of connection
with the other hand, -
6:04 - 6:06you're having to break it for this exercise.
-
6:06 - 6:13That's why it can be a little bit sticky sometimes.
Here we go, nice and slow, 3, 4, -
6:13 - 6:18(plays) 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
6:18 - 6:241 and 2 and 3 and 4 and,
-
6:24 - 6:26here's the 3rd bar,
-
6:26 - 6:302 and 3 and 4 and the 4th bar,
-
6:30 - 6:35and 2 and 3 and 4 and now over to D,
-
6:35 - 6:411 and 2 and 3 and 4 and the 2nd bar
-
6:41 - 6:45and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
6:45 - 6:52back to A and 2 and 3 and 4 and again,
-
6:52 - 6:57and 2 and 3 and 4, big jump over to E
-
6:57 - 7:06and 2 and 3 and 4, right over to D,
2 and 3 and 4 and -
7:06 - 7:10back to A, and 2 and 3 and 4
-
7:10 - 7:18and E and 2 and 3 and 4 and, A.
-
7:18 - 7:23Always a good idea to finish this blues on an A,
it kind of makes it sound finished. -
7:23 - 7:28If you just stop on E, it sounds weird.
So the thing you're going for now, -
7:28 - 7:31really trying to make sure that you don't stop
in between the chord changes, -
7:31 - 7:36trying to make sure that you pick the right strings,
and that you get the groove really nice. -
7:36 - 7:41This 12 bar blues is in the key of A fits perfectly
with the A minor pentatonic that we've been looking at. -
7:41 - 7:44If you have a jam buddy,
someone you've been doing some practice with, -
7:44 - 7:48one guy can sit down and play the 12 bar blues,
and the other guy can muck around -
7:48 - 7:51with the A minor pentatonic scale
and make up a solo over the top. -
7:51 - 7:56That's how these two things kind of link together,
very, very cool fun. We're going talk about that -
7:56 - 8:00a little bit more later on. For now what you want to do
is really work on getting that -
8:00 - 8:0412 bar blues rhythm style properly solid.
-
8:04 - 8:06So, I hope you enjoyed that look at the blues
-
8:06 - 8:09and I'll see you for another lesson sometime real soon.
