OTP volunteers report from TEDActive 2015

  • 0:04 - 0:07
    Kristin Windbigler: Hi! Welcome.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    [20,000 translators,
    70,000 translations, 107+ languages]
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    What brought me to TED,
    is the translation project.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
So when I meet with, you know,
    those different translators,
  • 0:19 - 0:24
    the challenges and the problems
which I face are the same
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    as they face and experience.
  • 0:26 - 0:31
Hence, I think the collaborative ideas
    which we have discussed --
  • 0:31 - 0:33
I think this is the most
    valuable thing for me.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
In the small translators' workshop we had,
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    we as translators shared
a lot of experience with each other,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
we learned from each others' experiences,
    we learned the problems,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    we brainstormed solutions
    for the challenges together.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    I really loved that experience.
  • 0:48 - 0:53
And after I was invited to TEDActive,
    it basically changed everything,
  • 0:53 - 0:57
because it was the first time
    I left my country, Brazil.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    So, I'm enjoying every talk,
    I'm absorbing every idea,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    I'm loving meeting people,
    networking, sharing ideas.
  • 1:03 - 1:08
I think I would need some different
    words to describe this event.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
I'm living the dream, you know?
It's an amazing thing, and I was --
  • 1:12 - 1:15
I was looking for free time,
    but, you know,
  • 1:15 - 1:19
I should sit now, I should think
about this, because this is so important.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
And it's always good to be
    with the TED community,
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    to share our experiences
and share our thoughts and discuss.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
There are ideas which you can't
    even imagine existed, so --
  • 1:31 - 1:35
This atmosphere is incredible, I love it.
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    Outside of the TED
    community, I'm a doctor,
  • 1:39 - 1:44
and I work at Calicut Medical College
    as a general physician.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    I really wanted to share
    these awesome videos
  • 1:47 - 1:53
with the youth, and people living
in rural areas, who do not speak English.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
That part of the community is one
which needs a change in their life.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
So I'm hoping with these subtitled talks,
  • 2:02 - 2:07
I will be, or TED will be, and we will be
touching that part of the community,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    which needs a real change.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
And I think that would be
    the real contribution,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    which I am hoping for.
  • 2:13 - 2:18
I really wanted people sitting back there
in Kerala, my province, my state,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    to be able to understand
the stuff in their own language,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
so that they can grasp the power,
    they can grasp the ideas,
  • 2:24 - 2:30
and they can create a better world
by, you know, just sharing ideas,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
and executing them in their own locality.
  • 2:33 - 2:38
    The impact; you come,
you meet all these fantastic people.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    They're all brilliant people,
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    they come from all countries,
    they speak all languages,
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    and you know, the environment
    which that has created,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
I think it's an enabling environment.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
It came at a moment when I really
    needed something to believe in,
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    I really needed something
    that I wanted to do
  • 2:54 - 2:57
just because I wanted to do it.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
TED is not just about translating,
it's not just about the talks.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    It's about the people.
It's about the ideas we share.
  • 3:04 - 3:09
Romane Ferreira: There was ice skating,
which, I was not very sure I would go,
  • 3:09 - 3:14
but when I was there it was so fun,
and I'm really glad I decided to go.
  • 3:14 - 3:21
    (Music)
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    (Music ends)
