T-Rex Mudhoney REVIEW (Guitar Lesson GG-203) How to play

  • 0:11 - 0:13
    Hello, Justin here again
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    for another pedal review.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
This time I am going to review
  • 0:16 - 0:17
    my latest addition to my
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    distortion pedal collection
  • 0:20 - 0:23
which is the T-Rex mudhoney pedal.
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    I got it mainly the
  • 0:25 - 0:28
some good guys, some really good guys,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
who use it, John Mayer, particularly.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    Really nifty little pedal,
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    pretty versatile,
a lot of goods sounds in this
  • 0:37 - 0:39
a couple of things I'm not keen on,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    but mostly,
it's a really really good pedal
  • 0:41 - 0:43
and it's got some great sounds
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    otherwise,
it wouldn't be in my collection
  • 0:45 - 0:47
so, uh, let's get a close up of this thing
  • 0:47 - 0:50
and checkout exactly what this thing does.
  • 0:51 - 0:56
Well, here we are for a look at
    the T-Rex Mudhoney pedal
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    um, pretty straightforward configuration
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    on/off sort of switch here
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    nothing too exciting
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    with that,
    good quality metal switch though
  • 1:03 - 1:05
we've got a gain control, as usual
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    controlling the amount of distortion
  • 1:07 - 1:09
we've got tone which is obviously kind of
  • 1:09 - 1:13
doing our treble and bass boost,
    that kind of effect
  • 1:13 - 1:16
and we have got a level control.
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    Usual LED light,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
it's also got a boost control
  • 1:19 - 1:21
which boosts the amount of gain
    going through it.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
I found that the boost switch
  • 1:23 - 1:28
is the one thing I'm not massively keen on
the sound of the boosted sound
  • 1:28 - 1:32
the pedal sounds fantastic by itself,
    without the boost button down
  • 1:32 - 1:37
but that was the only thing that I kind of
found was a little weird about it
  • 1:37 - 1:39
if we flip it over, you can see that
  • 1:39 - 1:41
you have got the two outputs,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    uh, two sockets rather,
    an input and an output
  • 1:44 - 1:46
and next to it you have got your
    9 volt power supply
  • 1:46 - 1:48
which is definitely a good idea
  • 1:48 - 1:50
flipping over the back of it,
  • 1:50 - 1:54
there is one thing that I am definitely
    not keen on
  • 1:54 - 1:56
is that this is the battery compartment
  • 1:56 - 1:58
to get into if you have got to
  • 1:58 - 2:00
kind of lever this down, and flick it open
  • 2:00 - 2:02
and I have already screwed up
    my finger nail twice
  • 2:02 - 2:04
trying to get this thing open
  • 2:04 - 2:05
i'm really, I'm not keen on that
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    and I'm not gonna
screw my fingernails up again, so, um
  • 2:08 - 2:10
yeah I'm not keen on that
  • 2:10 - 2:12
everything else about this pedal though is
  • 2:12 - 2:14
pretty cool, and the sound of it is great
  • 2:15 - 2:17
so, let's just patch it in so
  • 2:17 - 2:19
we will get the old power supply in there
  • 2:21 - 2:26
plug the guitar in and the amplifier, okay
  • 2:27 - 2:29
so, the first thing that we have to do,
    of course
  • 2:29 - 2:31
is turn the volume level down
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    first of all, (guitar playing)
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    there's your clean sound
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    put the pedal on,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    (guitar playing)
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    check, (guitar w/o effects)
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    it's clean
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    (guitar w/effects) now dirty
  • 2:43 - 2:46
so, let's have a look at the tonal
    possibilities for this
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    so, the first thing
  • 2:48 - 2:50
we are probably going to want
to have a look at is just the
  • 2:50 - 2:51
    (guitar playing)
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    tone control
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    (guitar playing)
  • 2:54 - 2:56
you can see we lost most of our
    top-end there
  • 2:56 - 2:59
if we put it right round the other way
    (guitar playing)
  • 2:59 - 3:00
    it is really bright
  • 3:00 - 3:03
so this has got quite a nice top end boost
    here
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    somewhere around here (guitar playing)
  • 3:06 - 3:09
is kind of where for me, it kind of sounds
    nice with this particular amp
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    (guitar playing)
  • 3:10 - 3:13
it's quite nice, it's a little bit rounder
  • 3:13 - 3:15
again, as I mentioned before in
    other reviews
  • 3:15 - 3:18
I tend to like my sounds a little brighter
  • 3:18 - 3:19
so, I tend to have it that way
  • 3:19 - 3:23
but, generally, again, your tone control
    is this kind of place
  • 3:23 - 3:26
you don't tend to go really extreme
  • 3:26 - 3:28
that way or the other way, it tends to
    sound a bit naff
  • 3:28 - 3:31
so, we are after that kind of position
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    (guitar playing)
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    that sound.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
So, let's have a look at the tonal
    possibilities here for you
  • 3:38 - 3:38
    (guitar playing)
  • 3:38 - 3:40
If we knock our gain right down
  • 3:40 - 3:43
probably boost the level a little as well
    (guitar playing)
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    (guitar playing)
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    we turn it off
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    (guitar playing)
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    that's the clean sound
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    here is the...
  • 3:51 - 3:55
    (guitar playing)
  • 3:55 - 3:58
quite a nice, just vague crunch
  • 3:58 - 4:01
which I really like in this pedal,
    these low gain settings
  • 4:01 - 4:01
    it's quite...
  • 4:01 - 4:11
    (guitar playing)
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    It's kind of distortive,
    but it's not real distortion
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    it's just like a
    it sounds to me
  • 4:15 - 4:16
a bit like a valve thing
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    you know, it's quite valve-y
    compared to other pedals
  • 4:19 - 4:22
um, if we just boost the gain
around just a little bit more
  • 4:22 - 4:26
    (guitar playing)
  • 4:26 - 4:28
we start to get those nice overtones
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    the distorted overtones
  • 4:29 - 4:38
    (guitar playing)
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    good, really good,
I really like the sounds in here
  • 4:42 - 4:45
turning the gain up now, a little bit more
  • 4:45 - 4:51
    (guitar playing)
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    the thing I like about
    this sort of distortion
  • 4:53 - 4:57
    is it's not so distorted,
    to muck up your note
  • 4:57 - 4:59
often, if you get too much distortion
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:00 - 5:02
you can't pluck out the individual notes
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    but here...
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:05 - 5:07
you can here it quite clearly
  • 5:07 - 5:09
it also seems to clean up it well,
    these pedals
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:11 - 5:13
if you play a little bit softer
    you get the
  • 5:13 - 5:15
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:15 - 5:16
    if you play harder
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:19 - 5:21
it reminds me a little bit
    of these effect amplifiers
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    called Dumble amplifiers
    where the harder you pick
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    the more distortion you get
  • 5:25 - 5:27
and that's a really nice thing
  • 5:27 - 5:29
we'll turn the gain right up
    and just have a listen
  • 5:29 - 5:41
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    really good, really like
    the sounds on this
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    even with this much distortion
  • 5:46 - 5:47
again if we play a bit softly
  • 5:47 - 5:54
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    it's quite clean
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    (guitar playing)
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    the harder you pick,
the more broken up it gets
  • 6:00 - 6:10
    (guitar playing)
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    good, really good effect there
  • 6:12 - 6:15
so, the big winner for me with this pedal
  • 6:15 - 6:18
is the variations in the gain
  • 6:18 - 6:20
I do like it quite back
  • 6:20 - 6:30
    (guitar playing)
  • 6:30 - 6:33
it's got a really good, little,
just kind of a crunch thing
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    now, the boost button here
  • 6:35 - 6:36
    (guitar playing)
  • 6:37 - 6:38
    take it off
  • 6:38 - 6:39
    (guitar playing)
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    its adding, a discount level,
  • 6:41 - 6:42
    (guitar playing)
  • 6:42 - 6:44
just adding kind of a fatness to the sound
  • 6:44 - 6:46
not so much more of a gain boost
  • 6:46 - 6:47
    (guitar playing)
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    but like a "fat" button
  • 6:49 - 6:56
    (guitar playing)
  • 6:57 - 6:58
    that's pretty handy
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    what I didn't like,
    was right up here
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    (guitar playing)
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    where it's already pretty distorted
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    (guitar playing)
  • 7:06 - 7:08
the bottom end really breaks up, so
  • 7:08 - 7:10
I'm really not digging the boost button
  • 7:10 - 7:11
    when the gains up
  • 7:11 - 7:14
but I'm digging the boost button,
    when the gains back
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    and, (guitar playing)
  • 7:17 - 7:18
    it's just fattening it up
  • 7:18 - 7:23
    (guitar playing)
  • 7:23 - 7:24
    off,
  • 7:24 - 7:30
    (guitar playing)
  • 7:30 - 7:33
it's a little bit more of an EQ change,
    than a boost button
  • 7:33 - 7:35
in a traditional kind of "boost" sense
  • 7:35 - 7:38
as you will see on some of
    the other pedals
  • 7:38 - 7:40
like they've got a different kind
    of boost effect
  • 7:40 - 7:43
so um, really really good sounds
    in the old Mudhoney
  • 7:43 - 7:45
great for that "not too distorted" thing
  • 7:45 - 7:47
when you want just a little bit of crunch
  • 7:47 - 7:49
yeah, a really really great sounding pedal
  • 7:49 - 7:52
I'm glad to have that in
    my collection of pedals
  • 7:52 - 7:55
so, yeah you'll definitely want to go and
    check it out
  • 7:55 - 7:57
the other good thing with it,
    the old T-Rex brand
  • 7:57 - 8:00
is that they're kind of what's called
    a boutique pedal
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    which is kind of hand-made
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    sort of "posh" pedals
  • 8:03 - 8:04
    a bit more expensive
  • 8:04 - 8:06
but these ones aren't that much
    more expensive
  • 8:06 - 8:08
than your regular kind of Boss pedal
  • 8:08 - 8:11
but they've got a lot more of the
    boutique-y sound
  • 8:11 - 8:14
a lot more, kind of, expensive sound
  • 8:14 - 8:15
    if you like
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    yeah, definitely worth a checkout
  • 8:17 - 8:19
their whole range of stuff is really good
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    but, particularly this pedal,
  • 8:21 - 8:22
    it's a particularly cool one
  • 8:24 - 8:26
okay, I hope you enjoyed my review
  • 8:26 - 8:30
of the T-Rex Mudhoney distortion pedal
  • 8:30 - 8:33
um, like I said, really really good sounds
  • 8:33 - 8:34
great for the kind of, you know
  • 8:34 - 8:36
not too distorted kind of sounds
  • 8:36 - 8:38
it's definitely not a heavy metal pedal
  • 8:38 - 8:44
if you are into kind of your blues,
and kind of Rock-y, not too heavy rock
  • 8:44 - 8:46
you know, the John Mayer sort of tones
  • 8:46 - 8:48
really, really good pedal for that
  • 8:48 - 8:51
yeah, a good one, go and check it out
    in a store near you
  • 8:52 - 8:56
don't forget, go and check the website
for plenty more reviews of gear
  • 8:56 - 8:58
    and guitar lessons and stuff
  • 8:58 - 9:00
um, yeah I'll be seeing you around
  • 9:00 - 9:02
    for another review very soon
  • 9:02 - 9:03
    see you later, bye bye
