Intermediate Method Foundation Revision (Guitar Lesson IM-160) Consolidation
-
0:12 - 0:14Hi, Justin here, how're you doing?
-
0:14 - 0:17If you're watching this video I'm guessing
you've made it all of the way through -
0:17 - 0:21the Intermediate Foundation lessons,
so well done, congratulations! -
0:21 - 0:24I'm sure you've put in a whole heap of work
-
0:24 - 0:28and I hope that you're a lot better guitar
player now than you were when you started. -
0:28 - 0:32Now the idea of this little lesson
is just a consolidation one really. -
0:32 - 0:34I'm gonna run through all of the
things that you should have done -
0:34 - 0:36and that you should be
confident and cool with, -
0:36 - 0:39before you move on to the style modules.
-
0:39 - 0:42Now the reason I've just kind of
divided stuff up like this is that -
0:42 - 0:47I'm pretty sure at this kind of level, not everyone
wants to study all the different styles. -
0:47 - 0:51Not everyone wants to check out heavy
metal or slide guitar or jazz or whatever. -
0:51 - 0:55So this way, the idea is that we get through
all of the kind of the foundation skills, -
0:55 - 0:58so technical and knowledge base
skills, that you'd need to -
0:58 - 1:01really kind of grow as
an intermediate guitar player, -
1:01 - 1:03and the idea is once you
you've got this stuff down -
1:03 - 1:09that you'd then apply these new skills and
this new knowledge, into the style modules. -
1:09 - 1:12Now once you've done a few,
let's say five kind of style modules, -
1:12 - 1:16then I kind of recommend that
you move onto the next level of stuff -
1:16 - 1:20which I kind of call a player level, right?
Which is the five positions of scales, -
1:20 - 1:23and playing all over the neck,
and more complicated theory and modes -
1:23 - 1:25and that sort of stuff, you know?
-
1:25 - 1:29Start to specialize a little bit more, depending
on exactly what it is that you wanna do. -
1:29 - 1:33So, let's go through, I've gotta have a little
list here that I'm referring to on my laptop, -
1:33 - 1:36otherwise I wouldn't be able to remember
all the stuff we've done to be honest, -
1:36 - 1:37'cause there's is quite a lot of stuff,
-
1:37 - 1:40you've covered a lot of ground
in this course, you know. -
1:40 - 1:43So, first thing, chords!
-
1:43 - 1:47You shoud have your E shape and A shape
barre chords confidently under your fingers, -
1:47 - 1:52both Maj, Min, Min7 and 7 chord grips,
-
1:52 - 1:55and you shoud also have
your triad chord shapes -
1:55 - 2:00on the strings 1, 2 and 3, and 2, 3 and 4,
three different kind of shapes -
2:00 - 2:04of each of major and minor,
and be able to use them all over the neck -
2:04 - 2:08so, of course that kind of involves
a little bit of the kinda knowledge stuff -
2:08 - 2:11which is knowing the notes all over the
fingerboard, but we'll get to that in a sec. -
2:11 - 2:18As far as scales go, you should have the major
scale in position 1, really cool by know, you know, -
2:18 - 2:22you should be ready now to be looking
at the other positions of the major scale, -
2:22 - 2:26so you should be confident and playing
a cool solo using position 1, you know, -
2:26 - 2:31being able to use just one finger if you like and
well, more to the point not being restricted -
2:31 - 2:35to only using the set scale fingering,
that's really what I'm after. -
2:35 - 2:40Don't care if you can do it with one finger, but
feeling free of having to use specific fingers -
2:40 - 2:42to play the scale up and down.
-
2:42 - 2:47You should have the blues scale down,
a little bit of a look at that hybrid blues scale, -
2:47 - 2:51and have an understanding and be able to
play it a bit with the major pentatonic scale. -
2:51 - 2:53Now major pentatonic is something
you'll probably explore a bit more -
2:53 - 2:58if you get into country guitar or
kind of more advanced blues things -
2:58 - 3:02but as long as you get the scales down,
particularly the major scale, that's the big one really -
3:02 - 3:06'cause you wanna be ready to now kind of
move through some other positions too. -
3:06 - 3:11Rhythm, you should be happy, kind of cool
with the 16th note thing now, -
3:11 - 3:15being able to use the accents,
being able to use a bit of syncopation -
3:15 - 3:18i.e. not always playing
on the beat all the time; -
3:18 - 3:22and also we kind of looked at the splangs,
and the spreads, and chips -
3:22 - 3:26so, you should have those, kind of
as part of your kind of repertoire -
3:26 - 3:30when you're playing a tune, you should be
able to kinda play those things pretty good -
3:30 - 3:34and also remember we looked at the picked
fingerstyle, which is a really, really usefull skill -
3:34 - 3:37and you're gonna find that
comes up in lots of differents styles -
3:37 - 3:40so, make sure you feel kind of
confident with that as well. -
3:40 - 3:45Now, we got knowlege stuff, you should
know every note on the fingerboard, right? -
3:45 - 3:48We are kinda already mentioned that,
you should really within a couple of seconds, -
3:48 - 3:51any note over the fingerboard
be able to name it. -
3:51 - 3:56Be really,really good if you can read a simple
melody in proper kind of music notation -
3:56 - 4:00and be confident that you can
work out stuff in the open position -
4:00 - 4:02that'd be, you know,
it's maybe not an essential thing, -
4:02 - 4:04'cause it depends on what style
modules you wanted to do -
4:04 - 4:08but I think that's kind of a really good
skill for all intermediate guitar players -
4:08 - 4:11really, to tell the truth, that's
something you should have -
4:11 - 4:16and also the idea of being able to
create and use melodic patterns, -
4:16 - 4:21that's another thing that really makes
a big difference for guitar players -
4:21 - 4:25is being able to kind of use that
stuff to make music out of it, -
4:25 - 4:30to help to kinda bridge the gap between the
scale being just a scale that you play up and down -
4:30 - 4:33and making it a kind of a
creative musical thing. -
4:33 - 4:36Technique stuff, we looked at
the minimum movement exercise -
4:36 - 4:38so you should have a
better control of your fingers -
4:38 - 4:40that's something that you
work on for years, you know, -
4:40 - 4:43I still working on that sort of stuff myself
-
4:43 - 4:46making sure that my fingers aren't flying
around too much when I'm doing stuff. -
4:46 - 4:49You should be super confident now
playing scales with the metronome. -
4:49 - 4:52So, we are not really that
freaked out about the speed, -
4:52 - 4:54but I'm thinking really
you should be doing -
4:54 - 4:57two notes per click really,
kinda maybe 120, or something -
4:57 - 5:02at least, that it... really before you should be
graduating really from Intermediate Foundation. -
5:02 - 5:05So, hopefully you're at that level.
Speed's not that important, -
5:05 - 5:07it's more important that you're kind of
confident with the scale -
5:07 - 5:09and that you can play and
synchronize with the metronome -
5:09 - 5:13that's, syncing with the
metronome is really important. -
5:13 - 5:15In fact I probably should have added
some of that into the rhythm thing of... -
5:15 - 5:19just, you know, making sure that you
can play confidently with a metronome -
5:19 - 5:22with your rythm stuff,
that's also very important. -
5:22 - 5:26Controlling string noise is
something else we talked about -
5:26 - 5:30so even if you're not doing it perfectly,
you know, you're aware of what you have to do -
5:30 - 5:33'cause that's something that kinda
grows with experience as well so, -
5:33 - 5:36the longer your play the more you
kind of get used to tiding up those notes -
5:36 - 5:39so, that's a pretty important thing as well.
-
5:39 - 5:41We also looked at string bending,
-
5:41 - 5:44so, hopefully your string
bends now nicely in tune, -
5:44 - 5:47that you kind of confident and able to
get that with a good technique and you're not -
5:47 - 5:50using the finger muscles,
you're using your hand and your wrist -
5:50 - 5:53and you're confident with a good bend,
-
5:53 - 5:55you know, there's lots of
stuff that goes on from that, -
5:55 - 5:59being able to do your bend
with vibrato and stuff, -
5:59 - 6:01bends that are bigger than a tone,
-
6:01 - 6:03there's quite a few kind of
steps up above that one, -
6:03 - 6:05so, make sure your
bending is really confident. -
6:05 - 6:09And you'll also need bending for all
your blues licks and stuff as well so, -
6:09 - 6:11that's an important thing.
-
6:12 - 6:16Improvising: you should be able to
improvise a solo with the major scale -
6:16 - 6:19the blues scale or the hybrid
scale, the major pentatonic, -
6:19 - 6:24you should be confident with using any finger for those improvisations and really being able to use it,
-
6:24 - 6:28and maybe being able to be confident
playing a blues bass line as well. -
6:28 - 6:31So, I think there's a lot to be
learned it that little thing, -
6:31 - 6:34even that's blues and maybe you're not... if you're
not a blues fan, you want to play rock and stuff, -
6:34 - 6:38learning that blues bass line and how to
use it make up your own kind of lines with it -
6:38 - 6:44there's something extra, that you get from it other
than just playing the riff up and down, you know, -
6:44 - 6:46so, definitely stick at that one.
-
6:46 - 6:51And also, probably last but certainly not
least, maybe even the most important, -
6:51 - 6:55is your "just use sound to improve now" training,
hopefully that you're cool with all of that, -
6:55 - 6:58you're able to transcribe some songs on
your own, and some melodies on your own, -
6:58 - 7:01and work out the rhythms as well,
and write down the rhythm. -
7:01 - 7:06That stuff, you know, the ear training stuff is
something you have to do on your own mostly, -
7:06 - 7:11that's why I don't spend too much time on it during
the lessons, because it's a YOU thing, you know, -
7:11 - 7:16I can't give that to you, only you, you can get it,
you can go and get it, but I can't give it to you. -
7:16 - 7:19It's really about you practising
and you putting your head down -
7:19 - 7:24and getting in there and doing it, you know,
there's no substitute for it, with transcribing -
7:24 - 7:29other than just sitting down and doing it, over and
over again, until you get the result that you want, -
7:29 - 7:32which is being able to learn songs yourself by ear,
-
7:32 - 7:34and that's a really, really important skill.
-
7:34 - 7:39So, if you've let that one past you by,
get back in there and get stuck into, -
7:39 - 7:44using the Justin Training Exercises to help you,
'cause it's kind of a foot up to transcribing, -
7:44 - 7:49it's not like in the real world transcribing,
you don't know what... it could be anything! -
7:49 - 7:51you know, you got no clues.
-
7:51 - 7:53Whereas with this stuff at least I'm giving you
a kind of a roundabout thing -
7:53 - 7:56and say "look, it's gonna use this scale,
or these chord shapes, or whatever", -
7:56 - 7:58makes it a lot easier.
-
7:58 - 8:04So, that's what you shoud have got.
Now, that's a lot of stuff there, -
8:04 - 8:07there's a lot of ground there,
now, if there's a few bits missing, -
8:07 - 8:10make up your own little practice routine,
-
8:10 - 8:13and go through and start working
on the things that're still lacking. -
8:13 - 8:17You might wanna check the website
for the intermediate practice routine -
8:17 - 8:19which is a really well structured
little routine, -
8:19 - 8:22introduces some new exercises,
which are all on the site in the free part in the -
8:22 - 8:24technique department particularly,
-
8:24 - 8:26so, you might wanna start
checking those out and then -
8:26 - 8:30plug in any of these other things
that you're still not confident with, -
8:30 - 8:33put those things into that routine,
and make sure that you get all of these -
8:33 - 8:36kinda signed off, if you like,
before you move on to the other stuff. -
8:36 - 8:40It really makes a difference if you kinda...
if you can draw a line under this and go: -
8:40 - 8:43"yeah, I can do all this stuff."
That's really good, you know, that's a great thing. -
8:43 - 8:48Get a few styles under your fingers and
then you'll be a really solid intermediate player, -
8:48 - 8:52and at that point that I would really say
kinda, you know, you can play guitar! -
8:52 - 8:54And that's a cool thing to be
able to say to yourself, you know, -
8:54 - 8:57so... look, I really hope you've enjoyed the course,
-
8:57 - 9:03thanks for doing it, thanks for
supporting justinguitar and, you know, -
9:03 - 9:05hope a lot of you have checked out the DVD
-
9:05 - 9:11and got some benefit from that extra
lessons that I've added to that one as well, -
9:11 - 9:14I'll see you for all of the styles stuff really soon
-
9:14 - 9:18and then eventually more
advanced player things too -
9:18 - 9:21so look, take care of yourselves,
have a great time, enjoy your guitar -
9:21 - 9:23and I'll see you for more lessons, real soon.
-
9:23 - 9:26Take care dudes, bye-bye!
