The quiet power of introverts | BBC Ideas

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    [female speaker]
I am an introvert... and I love it.
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    And I'm not alone.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Introverts are everywhere
  • 0:07 - 0:10
and our quiet approach to life,
  • 0:10 - 0:13
our need for solitary time, isn't a flaw.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    It's a gift.
  • 0:16 - 0:22
But, as an introvert, it's not always easy
to realize how wonderful you are.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
The world feels like a place
    that rewards extroverts.
  • 0:26 - 0:31
    Where being loud is mistaken
    for being confident and happy.
  • 0:31 - 0:36
Where everyone has something to say,
    but nobody listens.
  • 0:36 - 0:41
A world of "Open Plan" offices,
    networking parties, and big personalities.
  • 0:41 - 0:46
    For those who speak softly,
it is easy to feel left out.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    As a child, I blended
    into the background.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
Many thought that I had little to say
or that I simply didn't like others,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    but that wasn't true.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    People often think introverts are
    shy or antisocial,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    but these are misconceptions.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    Introverts, like anyone,
    can find socializing fun.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    But, where parties leave extroverts
    energized, after some time,
  • 1:12 - 1:17
    introverts need to recharge
    away from everyone.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
There's a scientific theory for this.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    There are two important chemicals
    found in all our brains:
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    dopamine and acetylcholine.
  • 1:26 - 1:32
Dopamine is like a hit of energy
when we take risks or meet new people,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
and it makes extroverts feel great.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    But introverts are more
    sensitive to dopamine
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    and get quickly overstimulated.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
That's why we prefer the more
    slow-burn feeling we get
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    when our brains release acetylcholine.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    That happens when we concentrate,
    read, or focus our minds.
  • 1:52 - 1:58
It makes us introverts feel relaxed,
    alert, and content,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
but it barely registers with extroverts.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    Of course, like anything,
    it's a sliding scale.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
You can lean one way or another,
or be a bit of both,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    known as an ambivert.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    Now, I understand myself better.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
I am deeply grateful for how I am.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    Instead of filling up space
    with small talk,
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    I listen patiently and
    make my words matter.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    I have few friends,
    but our connection is deep.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    I love spending time alone.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
It's where the chaos of a long day
    can finally settle.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
I can reflect and listen to my thoughts
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    and eventually reconnect with myself.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
    Only after that...
am I ready to share with the world again.
  • 2:46 - 2:51
    I have learned strategies for
finding comfort in our noisy world,
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    from using music to
    creating bubbles of peace
  • 2:55 - 2:58
to escaping to a quiet park
    at lunch time.
  • 2:59 - 3:04
    I adore the intensity and
    chaotic beauty of the world,
  • 3:04 - 3:08
    but it's in quiet spaces
where I feel truly at home.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    If introversion were
    more valued by society,
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    it could make a massive
    difference to our collective future.
  • 3:18 - 3:24
    The unique attributes of introverts
really are a deep, quiet strength.
  • 3:25 - 3:31
    As Gandhi put it,
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    "In a gentle way,
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    "you can shake the world"
  • 3:34 - 3:35
    male voice
