Interval Ear Training: Aural Training Stage 2of5 (Guitar Lesson AU-102) How to play

0:12 - 0:14Welcome to Aural Training Stage 2.

0:14 - 0:20In this lesson we're going to be looking at
the Major 2nd and Major 3rd intervals. -
0:20 - 0:22We'll talk about the song references,
we'll do a little test on them. -
0:22 - 0:25And then we're going to mix them in
with the intervals that we've looked at before, -
0:25 - 0:27which is the intervals of the 4th and the 5th.

0:27 - 0:29We'll do a little test to see how you're getting on.

0:29 - 0:31So, let's get started.

0:31 - 0:35The interval of a Major 2nd
is the second note of the scale. -
0:35 - 0:38Of course. (plays) Sounds like that.

0:38 - 0:41And it is the beginning of either Happy Birthday
-
0:41 - 0:44. . .
-
0:44 - 0:46or Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer.

0:46 - 0:51. . .
-
0:51 - 0:52It's also the beginning of the scale.

0:52 - 0:55. . .
-
0:55 - 0:58Major Scale. A scale. The Major Scale specifically.

0:58 - 1:04So what we're listening for now, (plays)
practicing singing along is a really good idea. -
1:04 - 1:06. . .

1:06 - 1:08Especially if you're bed-rooming,
and no one else is listening. -
1:08 - 1:11No one'll really mind, you might not be able
to do it on the train. -
1:11 - 1:14It's because you'll probably feel a little bit stupid.

1:14 - 1:16OK, thats a Major 2nd.

1:16 - 1:17Next we're looking at Major 3rd.

1:17 - 1:20. . .

1:20 - 1:22The one I always think of for this, I don't know why,
-
1:22 - 1:25there's other songs as well, on the website,
but the one I think of is, -
1:25 - 1:26Oh When the Saints Go Marching In.

1:26 - 1:34. . .

1:34 - 1:35Major 3rd.

1:35 - 1:41. . .

1:41 - 1:42OK so, what we're going to be doing now.

1:42 - 1:45is trying to listen out to those intervals really closely.

1:45 - 1:47First of all, before I do a little test with those,

1:47 - 1:50I'm going to show them to you
in case you want to play you know, -
1:50 - 1:54testing your jam buddy,
or you want to be able to play the intervals yourself. -
1:54 - 1:55So let's go to a quick close up.

1:56 - 2:02OK, the interval of a Major 2nd, (plays)
just two frets higher on the same string. -
2:02 - 2:04. . .
-
2:04 - 2:05Works on any string this one.
-
2:05 - 2:08. . .
-
2:08 - 2:09Doesn't matter, it's just two frets higher.

2:09 - 2:12. . .

2:12 - 2:18And the interval of a Major 3rd Is either (plays)
I always think of it like this, -
2:18 - 2:20there's another way of doing it,
but let's just do this one for now. -
2:20 - 2:23So you're going to start of with your 2nd
finger on the Root note, -
2:23 - 2:24and it's one fret back on the next string.

2:24 - 2:27. . .

2:27 - 2:29Again you could move it around.
-
2:29 - 2:34. . .
-
2:34 - 2:37Doesn't matter where you move it to, that's the shape.
-
2:37 - 2:41Remember that all of the shapes I'm giving you
are also found on the website. -
2:41 - 2:43So if you want, like a little reference page or whatever,
-
2:43 - 2:46when you're testing your mate, then that
would be a really good thing to print out for yourself. -
2:46 - 2:48It's available as a PDF, go and download that now.

2:48 - 2:51OK, we're ready for a test.

2:51 - 2:56So in this test we're just going to be looking
at Major 2nd's and Major 3rds. -
2:56 - 2:58So you could write just a 2 or a 3.
-
2:58 - 3:02So it's going to be 10 questions.
So you might want to write down 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. -
3:02 - 3:04In a little column, and let's get going.

3:04 - 3:09This time I'm only going to play each interval for you twice.
-
3:09 - 3:12Last time it was three times.
We're going to be just doing it two now. -
3:12 - 3:15So listen closely. If you need to, pause.
-
3:15 - 3:20But try not to. Try and just keep up with what I'm doing at
And write down what you think. -
3:20 - 3:25A little hint that's quite useful.
Often the first thing that you think it is, is correct. -
3:25 - 3:29I used to do aural training
as a teacher at the Guitar Institute. -
3:29 - 3:31And the amount of times when we did tests and stuff
-
3:31 - 3:33that somebody would write down the correct answer,
-
3:33 - 3:37and then scribble it out and write
the wrong answer next to it, was really often. -
3:37 - 3:40I'd say probably half of the time
somebody had scribbled one out, -
3:40 - 3:41and then written something else,
-
3:41 - 3:43the one that they scribbled out was the right one.
-
3:43 - 3:48A little bit of the process of learning this
is to believe in your instinct a little bit. -
3:48 - 3:50To try and really feel the rhythm.
-
3:50 - 3:52Have played them, you know just playing them
as I'm showing you, -
3:52 - 3:56is a really good way of kind of internalising that interval.
-
3:56 - 3:58It's really good practice this stuff, so stick at it.
-
3:58 - 4:01Here we go, here's your first test.

4:01 - 4:04This is Major 2nd and Major 3rd intervals.

8:59 - 9:04If there are any intervals that you find you're
getting wrong particularly more than others, -
9:04 - 9:07then it might be worth playing those
ones a few extra times, -
9:07 - 9:11you know, play them on the guitar,
sing along with it if you can, -
9:11 - 9:14that's a really good way,
make sure you think of the song interval that relates -
9:14 - 9:17to the interval as well. That's a really good idea.

9:19 - 9:21Shouldn't be causing you too many problems yet.

9:21 - 9:22It's gonna get a little bit fun later on.
-
9:22 - 9:25So make sure you get these basic ones nice and solid.

9:25 - 9:27Plenty of practice. That's the way to go.
