Power Chords 2 (Guitar Lesson BC-186) Guitar for beginners Stage 8 English transcript

  • 0:07 - 0:09
Hi how are you doing, Justin here.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
In this video today we are going to be
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    checking out more Power Chords
  • 0:13 - 0:15
this time we're going to be checking the ones
  • 0:15 - 0:16
that have a got a 5th string root.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
Now every power chord can be found
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    in two different places,
  • 0:20 - 0:21
one with a 6th string root
  • 0:21 - 0:23
and one with a 5th string root.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
The last lesson that we looked at power chords
  • 0:25 - 0:27
we were checking out 6th string root ones.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
So I'm hoping that you've got the shape down.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
You can move it up and down,
  • 0:30 - 0:31
you understand the idea of the root note
  • 0:31 - 0:33
and maybe you've played a few riffs as well.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
So what we are checking out this time is
  • 0:36 - 0:37
power chords with a 5th string root.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
So lets have a look at a C5 power chord
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    So, there's a C5,
  • 0:42 - 0:46
you can see here our 1st finger is on the root note
  • 0:46 - 0:50
We've got here the 3rd finger and the 4th finger underneath
  • 0:50 - 0:52
So it's exactly the same shape
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    here was our G5
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and this is exactly the same shape
  • 0:56 - 0:59
but moved down toward the ground one string.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
Now the other really important thing to realize
  • 1:00 - 1:04
probably the most important thing to realize with this chord
  • 1:04 - 1:07
is that the tip of your first finger is touching
  • 1:07 - 1:09
the 6th string to mute it.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
If you forget to do that, and you hit that open string
  • 1:12 - 1:14
often it will sound really atrocious,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
especially if you've got distortion on,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
so really make sure that the tip of your finger
  • 1:18 - 1:20
is almost like you put it on the note normally
  • 1:20 - 1:23
and then just kind of push the tip of it up
  • 1:23 - 1:27
until you train it to always touch the 6th string.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
That mutings of the 6th string are really constraints
  • 1:29 - 1:32
and enough it is incredibly incredibly important
  • 1:32 - 1:36
it's one of the things that if I hear a student playing
  • 1:36 - 1:37
and they are forgetting to hit that 6th string
  • 1:37 - 1:41
it's really rank! Especially rock guitar players
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    that young guitar players
  • 1:42 - 1:44
that haven't learnt to do this trick
  • 1:44 - 1:45
    or haven't mastered it
  • 1:45 - 1:47
it's some of the most horrible sounding rock stuff
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    I've ever heard,
  • 1:48 - 1:50
so really, if you gonna focus on one thing
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    to do with this chord,
  • 1:51 - 1:53
make sure it covering that 6th string
  • 1:53 - 1:55
and muting it so it doesn't make a sound.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
Now, once you've got the chord shape down
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    for the C, cause I haven't that
  • 1:59 - 2:01
if you've got one of the 6th string root down,
  • 2:01 - 2:03
you shouldn't find this one too difficult.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
The next trick is to have a go at trying to play
  • 2:05 - 2:08
some riffs and moving this chord up and down.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
We are not worried about changing between
  • 2:09 - 2:11
6th string and 5th string yet,
  • 2:11 - 2:12
that's gonna come in the next stage.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
But what we really are trying to do now is move the
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    5th string root around, so
  • 2:16 - 2:17
we might in a, like it could,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    progression might be something like
  • 2:19 - 2:26
    D C F Bb
  • 2:26 - 2:30
quite a common funky little chord progression
  • 2:30 - 2:31
    and of course
  • 2:33 - 2:35
in the process of trying to play these
  • 2:35 - 2:36
you have to learn where the root notes are
  • 2:36 - 2:39
You have to know that D root note
  • 2:39 - 2:43
is found at the 5th fret of the 5th string
  • 2:43 - 2:47
and C is found at the 3rd fret of the 5th string
  • 2:47 - 2:50
and F is found all the way up at the 8th fret of the 5th string
  • 2:50 - 2:52
and you have to remember that that's your 1st finger
  • 2:52 - 2:54
who is going on that root note
  • 2:54 - 2:56
otherwise you won't be able to play it.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
So have a little play around with these
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    5th string root power chords,
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    moving them up and down
  • 3:01 - 3:02
making sure your stretch is good
  • 3:02 - 3:05
Really double checking and triple checking
  • 3:05 - 3:07
that the 6th string is covered
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    and sometimes it's worth even
  • 3:08 - 3:10
just deliberately picking the 6th string a bit harder
  • 3:10 - 3:14
just to make sure that that note is properly covered.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
and of course the 1st and 2nd strings,
  • 3:16 - 3:18
the thinnest two strings, are also muted
  • 3:18 - 3:20
by the inside of the first finger
  • 3:20 - 3:23
exactly as they were for the 6th string root powerchords
  • 3:23 - 3:26
which was a, I think a G5 was the one I showed you specifically.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
But, have a bit of fun with those.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
if you've got an electric guitar
  • 3:29 - 3:32
do try playing them with a little bit of distortion as well,
  • 3:32 - 3:34
just those open strings ringing out
  • 3:34 - 3:35
or if some of the notes should be buzzy
  • 3:35 - 3:38
that kind of highlights that, so...
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    it kind of...
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    look, it emphasizes your mistakes
  • 3:40 - 3:44
so that's why sometimes a good thing to do
  • 3:44 - 3:46
is to play with a bit of distorsion
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    so you can hear clearly
  • 3:48 - 3:50
what you're doing wrong and try and fix it.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
So have fun with that, rock yourself out
  • 3:52 - 3:54
and I'll see you in a sec to talk about
  • 3:54 - 3:57
your practice routine for this stage.
