How To Start Singing Again After A Long Break
    - Recondition Voice Quickly with 4 Exercises
  • 0:01 - 0:07
Haven’t sung for months or years? Here’s
how to start singing again after a long break.
  • 0:07 - 0:14
Here’s 4 exercises to quickly recondition
your voice. And you can help me recondition
  • 0:14 - 0:23
an historic building. What am I talking about?
    Watch!
  • 0:23 - 0:29
Hi, I’m Chuck Gilmore, International Vocal
Coach and Founder of Power To Sing.
  • 0:29 - 0:35
For amazing vocal technique to build a powerful
and confident singing voice, please subscribe
  • 0:35 - 0:39
and hit the bell to get notified when I post
    a video every week!
  • 0:39 - 0:44
Today’s video is different. I’m going
to give you something of great value to help
  • 0:44 - 0:50
restore and recondition your voice. In return
and I’m going to ask a personal favor of
  • 0:50 - 0:58
you. I’m going to ask for your help to recondition
a structure of historical significance. My
  • 0:58 - 1:05
daughter, Jessie, and her partner, Dave, own
this building and need our help. More about
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    that later.
  • 1:07 - 1:13
After months or years of not singing, I’m
going to give you four vocal exercises to
  • 1:13 - 1:20
quickly recondition your voice. I’ll teach
you these exercises using this historic building
  • 1:20 - 1:21
    as my studio.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
I’ll assume you sang a little or a lot,
months or years ago and now you want to get
  • 1:26 - 1:32
your voice working again. Your voice feels
“out of shape”. It’s been too long since
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    you’ve used it to sing.
  • 1:33 - 1:39
Just like your body reconditions with the
right exercises, the right vocal exercises
  • 1:39 - 1:44
can get your singing voice to come back again.
    Your singing future is bright.
  • 1:44 - 1:50
Our bodies are like this building. It was
a gem when it was built and remains a gem
  • 1:50 - 1:55
now...just older. And like our voices, wear
and tear on this building takes its toll.
  • 1:55 - 2:01
For example the front porch is sinking with
age. It’s like losing your high notes.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
Maybe you weren’t “born” with high notes,
like this building wasn’t “born” with
  • 2:04 - 2:08
a ramp for easy wheelchair access.
  • 2:08 - 2:13
Your voice is beautiful, but like this building,
    it needs some reconditioning.
  • 2:13 - 2:19
Here are four powerful exercises guaranteed
to recondition your singing voice so you won’t
  • 2:19 - 2:25
be embarrassed. Soon you’ll be able to start
    singing again with confidence.
  • 2:25 - 2:29
To make this simple, I’ll demonstrate the
exercises for you now. At the end of the video
  • 2:29 - 2:35
I’ll give you a download link so you can
get all the exercises on your phone or computer
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    for easy practicing.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    Exercise One - Bubble Lips - 1 ½ Scale
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    Why
    This exercise is deceptively effective.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
First, it helps stretch and thin the vocal
cords in a controlled and safe manner and
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    shorten them as well.
  • 2:47 - 2:53
Second, it trains the vocal cords to adjust
from your low voice, (Chest Voice) to your
  • 2:53 - 2:57
high voice (Head Voice) without straining,
cracking or breaking into falsetto and back
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    down again.
  • 2:58 - 3:04
Third, it keeps the larynx down in a neutral
position. This enables you to sing higher
  • 3:04 - 3:09
without straining and allowing the vibrations
to shift easily from chest to head voice and
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    back down.
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    How
  • 3:11 - 3:15
Say “uh” as you place your fingers along
your jawline and lift your cheeks up. This
  • 3:15 - 3:20
takes the weight of your cheeks off of the
lips so they are free to bubble without tension.
  • 3:20 - 3:26
Now blow air through your lips while lifting
your cheeks and saying “uh”. [demo]
  • 3:26 - 3:36
Use the 1 ½ scale as you do the bubble. It
    sounds like this: [demo]
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    Because you’re reconditioning your vocal
cords, if it’s too high, you can come in
  • 3:40 - 3:45
or stop whenever you feel you should. Also
don’t do it too loud. Just medium volume.
  • 3:45 - 3:51
Bonus Exercises: Do the same 1 ½ scale only
this time use a tongue trill. It sounds like
  • 3:51 - 4:03
this. [demo] If you can’t do the tongue
till...use the word “goo”. It sounds like
  • 4:03 - 4:14
this. [demo] Notice it goes hooty as I sing
higher. It shouldn’t pinch for strain like
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    this. [demo]
  • 4:16 - 4:22
[ On balcony filmed from below]
  • 4:22 - 4:27
Exercise Two - Ney’s Octave Repeat Scale
  • 4:27 - 4:33
This is another powerful reconditioning exercise.
It does many things at the same time. First,
  • 4:33 - 4:39
it reduces the heaviness of the chest voice
and second, it deepens the head voice so it
  • 4:39 - 4:46
doesn’t go into falsetto. Third, it connects
the tone when singing from chest to head voice
  • 4:46 - 4:52
and third, it creates an even tone between
all the notes from bottom to top and back
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    down again.
  • 4:54 - 5:05
Do this exercise medium soft, and add an exaggerated
sound like this using the Octave repeat scale.
  • 5:05 - 5:11
[demo] You can gradually increase the loudness
over time slightly, but not louder than medium
  • 5:11 - 5:12
    loud.
  • 5:12 - 5:16
The download will take you through a series
    of Ney’s.
  • 5:16 - 5:28
Bonus Exercises: Do the Neys on the 1 ½ scale
    like this. [demo]
  • 5:28 - 5:32
    Exercise Three - “E” - Arpeggio Scale
  • 5:32 - 5:44
Using the E vowel and a slight hooty sound,
this scale sounds like this. [demo arpeggio]
  • 5:44 - 5:54
Say “oo” as in “new” and with your
“oo” lips, say “E”. Allow the “E”
  • 5:54 - 6:06
to have a hooty sound as you sing higher like
    this. [demo]
  • 6:06 - 6:10
    Bonus Exercises:
Do the same scale, only this time use Bubble
  • 6:10 - 6:19
Lips. It sounds like this. [demo] Then do
the arpeggio scale using “Oh”. It sounds
  • 6:19 - 6:27
    like this. [demo]
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    Exercise Four - Mum
  • 6:29 - 6:37
Using the Octave Repeat and the 1 ½ scales,
say “mum”. The Octave Repeat Scale sounds
  • 6:37 - 6:52
like this. [demo] The mum on the 1 ½ scale
    sounds like this.
  • 6:52 - 6:55
General Instructions for All Vocal Recondition
    Exercises
  • 6:55 - 7:02
    1. Don’t push your voice hard. Come in or
stop singing when you need to. You don’t
  • 7:02 - 7:09
recondition your voice by pushing to extremes.
    2. At first, sing these medium soft. Over
  • 7:09 - 7:14
time you can increase the loudness to medium
    to medium loud.
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    3. Discontinue any exercise if you feel any
    discomfort.
  • 7:18 - 7:25
    4. Limit your total time daily to 30 minutes
a day. You may find it more effective to do
  • 7:25 - 7:32
    15 minutes twice a day.
    5. There is no one best time of day to practice.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
Find what works best for you.
  • 7:35 - 7:40
So what is the Clubhouse and why do we need
your help. I’ve love to show you around.
  • 7:40 - 7:45
Over a century ago in 1913, this architectural
masterpiece was commissioned by the Ladies’
  • 7:45 - 7:50
Literary Club of Utah, a group of well-educated
and ...well-off women! who met regularly to
  • 7:50 - 8:05
cultivate knowledge in history, science, arts,
    literature, and politics.
  • 8:05 - 8:10
While women all over the US formed these kinds
of social clubs, the Salt Lake City group
  • 8:10 - 8:18
was the oldest women’s club West of the
Mississippi River (est 1877) and they remained
  • 8:18 - 8:24
active right here in this Clubhouse until
2013, just a handful of years ago.
  • 8:24 - 8:31
In 2016 this incredible hall was purchased
by my daughter Jessica and her partner Dave.
  • 8:31 - 8:35
Through the support of their creative community,
they’ve renovated its features and opened
  • 8:35 - 8:40
it to the public for events, performances,
    weddings, workshops, recitals, etc
  • 8:40 - 8:48
Sounds great, right? So what’s the deal?
I’m glad you asked! This month, October
  • 8:48 - 8:54
of 2019, the Clubhouse is competing nationally
for a grant which would allow them to build
  • 8:54 - 8:58
    an ADA wheelchair ramp...
  • 8:58 - 9:01
(Chuck: What’s ADA? Jessica: American Disability
    Act
  • 9:01 - 9:07
American Disability Act wheelchair ramp. The
    wheelchair ramp is required…)
  • 9:07 - 9:12
...and to restore the sinking and deteriorating
front porch, and tend to some of the historic
  • 9:12 - 9:18
preservation projects required to keep this
beautiful building standing another 100 years
  • 9:18 - 9:22
and to make it accessible to all people for
    the first time in history!
  • 9:22 - 9:28
Out of almost 200 historic sites across the
country (all related to women’s history),
  • 9:28 - 9:35
Clubhouse is now 1 of 20 finalists for this
$150,000 grant! In order to win, they need
  • 9:35 - 9:43
our help! Every day until October 29th, we
