That's bad. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Announcer] It's Sunday, and [br]the side of a mountain has just collapsed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It crashes through the river that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 runs through the Rhondda Var,[br]near [?] town. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Nobody is injured, but[br]it's only today 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the sheer scale of that collapse[br]is obvious. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Something else that is clear 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is the amount of coal 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that was still [br]on this mountainside. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Gerald watched it all happen. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Gerald Durham][br]There was a roar, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you could see the muck 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 starting to slip[br]from the top area, there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Within a couple of hours,[br]the whole lot had come down there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Announcer] Do you feel vulnerable? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Gerald] Yeah. Yeah.[br]With this going on, yeah. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These valleys are surrounded by coal. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They were built on coal. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a frightening prospect,[br]you know. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If that could've happened 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on this side of the mountain, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it would be a totally different outcome. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Announcer] His father Cliff[br]is a former miner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You look at this landslide now,[br]what goes through your mind? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Cliff Durham] Oh, Aberfan,[br]straight away. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Believe me, we don't want[br]to see that again. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I wouldn't. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Announcer] I've been[br]speaking to people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on this street. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's Bryn Hailog, and it's[br]opposite to the landslide. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They described yesterday as eerie. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The sound of slurry[br]crashing down the mountain. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They are just thankful[br]that this happened 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in front of their homes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not behind them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The greenery of the valleys 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 disguises the amount of coal[br]that is still hidden here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In the 1970s, 80s and 90s, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the land was reclaimed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But now, there are calls[br]by local people, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to inspect all the areas[br]where coal was dumped. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Chris Bryant] We should definitely 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 be inspecting all the former[br]coal tips. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Making sure that if[br]there is excessive water in there, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that that is being drained off, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 make sure everything is safe. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because obviously, people [br]have seen the horrific pictures 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on television news, of[br]what's happened in Ponte Guy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 People might not have seen it[br]for themselves. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is much bigger than[br]it looked on television. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, people are, of course, worried. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is one thing, having water coming, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 coursing through your house. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is quite another, having, um, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 slurry, and the top of the mountain 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 coming down through your house. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Announcer] But, who is responsible? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Who owns the land? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Coal Authority says,[br]it's not them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Councils say, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they're not sure if they do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Who is responsible for these sites, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and who is maintaining them? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Andrew Morgan] At present, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we are in discussion with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Natural Resources, Wales. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Clears on the side of the hill. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is the big one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Rhondda Var is a concern to us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have engineers on site right now, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 monitoring it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Announcer] Do you think that is[br]your land, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or Natural Resources Wales' land? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Mr. Morgan] We are still in discussion[br]over that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Um, but at present,[br]we have engineers on site, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 trying to understand[br]if there is a risk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the properties, or the public. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Certainly there is some concern 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about the moment that happened[br]yesterday, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and what's caused it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Is it just water on the surface, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or is there a deeper issue[br]within the mountain? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That is currently under investigation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Rushing noises.] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Announcer] This is what happened 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 after a weekend of heavy rain. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These valleys know all too well 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the histories with landslides. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now, some are questioning 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whether this was a one-off, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or an early warning. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Rob Osbourne, ITV News.
