0:00:22.056,0:00:25.323 there's only chess club[br]and Peer Helpers, 0:00:25.323,0:00:27.004 so my options were pretty limited. 0:00:27.004,0:00:30.894 But the kids that I did see peer helping[br]looked like they were having tons of fun. 0:00:30.894,0:00:32.994 I mean, they were missing class, 0:00:32.994,0:00:34.550 sitting together at lunch, 0:00:34.550,0:00:36.903 and taking trips. 0:00:36.903,0:00:39.866 I wanted in on that, so I joined. 0:00:39.866,0:00:43.664 At the time, I had no idea I would[br]eventually be meeting someone 0:00:43.664,0:00:46.045 who would become [br]one of my closest friends today, 0:00:46.045,0:00:47.814 Henley Hager. 0:00:47.814,0:00:51.635 When I first met Henley and his family,[br]it was a disaster. 0:00:51.635,0:00:54.466 I vividly remember talking[br]to Mrs. Hager for the first time, 0:00:54.466,0:00:56.126 and I had no idea what to say. 0:00:56.126,0:00:58.036 It was probably something like, 0:00:58.036,0:01:03.466 "Hey, Mrs. Hager, I'm here[br]to work with Henley." 0:01:03.466,0:01:06.376 So after I introduced myself to her,[br]I finally met Henley, 0:01:06.376,0:01:08.585 the boy I was going to be working with. Regardless, over the next three years, 0:01:36.487,0:01:39.648 every Wednesday, I went with Henley[br]to an after-school program 0:01:39.648,0:01:41.908 where we would on social [br]and academic skills, 0:01:41.908,0:01:43.258 such as organization, 0:01:43.258,0:01:44.230 doing homework, 0:01:44.230,0:01:45.149 physical exercise, 0:01:45.149,0:01:45.877 calming down, 0:01:45.877,0:01:47.759 helping him understand the day's plan, 0:01:47.759,0:01:49.885 not complaining [br]when he doesn't get his way, 0:01:49.885,0:01:51.819 and engaging in small talk. 0:01:51.819,0:01:54.708 But as long That's one of the goals [br]of inclusion programs. 0:02:21.463,0:02:24.643 Inclusion programs benefit people[br]because they develop friendships, 0:02:24.643,0:02:27.238 increase achievement of IEP goals, 0:02:27.238,0:02:30.491 and greater opportunities for enhance[br]learning are formed. 0:02:30.491,0:02:33.633 But apart from all that, [br]we would go fun places. 0:02:33.633,0:02:36.840 I remember one time, Henley and I[br]went to the McWane Science Center 0:02:36.840,0:02:38.740 in Downtown Birmingham. 0:02:38.740,0:02:41.451 We had fun watching the fish,[br]and stingrays, and sharks. students in the Special Ed department 0:05:03.567,0:05:07.299 don't receive the adequate services[br]they deserve. 0:05:07.299,0:05:10.948 And of the schools who don't provide[br]the adequate services up to standard,[br]it's the students who suffer. 0:05:19.247,0:05:21.849 Think of all the kids [br]with learning disabilities 0:05:21.849,0:05:24.879 and how they need help[br]to thrive in their that has a very respectable[br]Special Education program 0:05:51.129,0:05:54.522 with many staff members[br]and a thriving Peer Helper program. 0:05:54.522,0:05:58.931 But, like I said before, not all schools,[br]a majority in fact, 0:05:58.931,0:06:01.750 adequately support the Special[br]Education department, 0:06:01.750,0:06:03.732 which is making it harder for these kids[br]
