Finding Common Denominators

  • 0:01 - 0:05
We have to rewrite the following fractions
  • 0:05 - 0:10
with fraction with least common denominator
  • 0:10 - 0:16
So LCD of the 2 fractions is going to be the LCM
  • 0:16 - 0:21
of both of these denominators over here.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
and if we can make this as common denominators
  • 0:25 - 0:29
we can add the two fractions
  • 0:29 - 0:32
First let us find the LCM,
  • 0:32 - 0:49
let me write it out LCD of 8 & 6
  • 0:49 - 0:58
is going to be the LCM of 8 & 6
  • 0:58 - 1:01
and a couple of ways to think about the LCM
  • 1:01 - 1:03
you could really take the multiples of 8 & 6
  • 1:03 - 1:09
and see what their smallest common multiple is.
  • 1:09 - 1:21
    Multiples of 6 - 6,12,18,24,30... i can keep going
  • 1:21 - 1:27
and the multiples of 8 are 8,16,24,. looks like
  • 1:27 - 1:33
we are done. I have found a common multiple
  • 1:33 - 1:35
it is the smallest multiple they have other
  • 1:35 - 1:40
common multiples like 48,72 and we can go on
  • 1:40 - 1:43
but this is their smallest common multiple
  • 1:43 - 1:51
So it is 24. Another way to find the LCM is
  • 1:51 - 1:56
take the prime factorization of 6 - 2x3
  • 1:56 - 2:03
and the LCM of 6 must have one 2 & one 3
  • 2:03 - 2:14
what is the prime factorization of 8 is 2x2x2.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
Inorder to be divisible by 8 we need to have three 2's
  • 2:16 - 2:19
in the prime factorization. To be divisible by 6
  • 2:19 - 2:24
we need to have 2,3 and to be divisible by 8 we need
  • 2:24 - 2:29
three 2's, we have only one 2 so we add a couple more
  • 2:29 - 2:42
so thsi is now divisible by 6 & 8
  • 2:42 - 2:50
    So 2x2x2x3 = 24. So LCM of 8 & 6
  • 2:50 - 2:54
which is the LCD also is 24
  • 2:54 - 2:58
So we want to write each of this fractions as
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    24 as their denominator.
  • 3:02 - 3:10
So lets start with 2/8, i want to write that as / 24
  • 3:10 - 3:13
so get the denominator as 24,
  • 3:13 - 3:18
we need to multiply the denominator by 3
  • 3:18 - 3:19
inorder not to change the fraction, we need to
  • 3:19 - 3:24
multiply the numerator also by the same number
  • 3:24 - 3:29
so we will multiply numerator by 3 ; 2x3=6
  • 3:29 - 3:33
    so 2/8 = 6/24
  • 3:33 - 3:43
    2/8 x 3/3 = 6/24
  • 3:47 - 4:00
and lets do the same things with 5/6
  • 4:00 - 4:10
    5/6 = / 24, i will do it in a different colour, blue
  • 4:10 - 4:13
to get the denominator from 6 to 24, we need
  • 4:13 - 4:18
to multiply by 4, so we need to multiply
  • 4:18 - 4:25
    numerator also by 4 so 5x4 = 20
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    5/6 = 20/24
  • 4:28 - 4:33
so we have written both the fractions with common denominator
  • 4:33 -
    So we are done
