Teacher tips for using the mastery reports

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    (light music)
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    - So I use the Skills Report
to look at how my students
  • 0:11 - 0:13
were progressing in each of the areas
  • 0:13 - 0:14
    of the Get Ready course.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    And after I identified that
    they had either mastered
  • 0:18 - 0:22
    the material or if they
    needed remediation,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
I knew what steps I could
    take moving forward,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
whether it be working a small group
  • 0:26 - 0:29
with students that needed some extra help
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    or pushing that student further
  • 0:30 - 0:33
into where they were going next
  • 0:33 - 0:35
in our actual algebra I curriculum.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    - Looking at the Skills Reports
    and the Activity Reports
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    really helps me to figure
    out what the students
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    have been focusing on,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
what they do need help with,
  • 0:44 - 0:48
and where I can direct them
to go for future use in Khan.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
So when I look at the Skills Report,
  • 0:49 - 0:53
I look to see not only
    what my students have done
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    and how much time they
    might've spent on it,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
but I also look to see if
    they've leveled up or down
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    on their skills, which is
    extremely helpful on that report.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
When we talk about specific skills
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    that the students and
    I focus on one-on-one,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    it's awesome to be able
    to go and look back
  • 1:08 - 1:11
to see if they've actually taken that path
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    or if they haven't,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
it's nice to be able to look at the skills
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    that they've actually focused on
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    and encourage them to maybe
    move on to something new
  • 1:19 - 1:21
or something a little more challenging.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    (light music)
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    - When it comes to groupings,
  • 1:26 - 1:28
Khan Academy makes it really easy too.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
So if a kid is taking a unit
test kind of as a pre-test,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    what they'll do is that
report will show me the kids
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    that already have it mastered,
  • 1:36 - 1:37
the kids that need some support,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    and maybe the kids that
    just haven't started it yet.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
So what it'll do is it
    will load automatically.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
It'll tell me who's got it mastered,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    who's familiar, who's proficient,
  • 1:46 - 1:49
and maybe who has no idea what to do.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    So after I teach a
    lesson and the kids work
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    with those skills within that,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
I can take a look at the
    Mastery Progress Report,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
I can refresh it and it'll tell me
  • 1:57 - 2:00
these four kids, or however many it is,
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    are familiar, maybe they
    need a little more support,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
these are the kids that are proficient,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    maybe they're ready for
    some extension as well.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    (light music)
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    - I use Course Mastery Reports
    to check students' progress
  • 2:15 - 2:18
on their course mastery goals biweekly
  • 2:18 - 2:21
so that I can help them
    reach their quarterly goals.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    I assign the whole course
    mastery at the beginning
  • 2:23 - 2:27
of the year and I expected
    students to complete
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    about 20% per quarter.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
And I would give them a
goal of about 80% per year
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    before their AP exam.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    I encourage them to complete
    their quarterly goal,
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    see if they reached, and
    if they did not reach,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
ask what kind of help they need.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
So I use Course Mastery Reports biweekly
  • 2:49 - 2:52
to keep track of their status
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    on their course mastery goals.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    - So if a child is really
    struggling with, let's say,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
division is kind of a complicated one,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
and we see that our class average is 40%,
  • 3:02 - 3:03
the greatest thing in the world
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    is when kids are like,
    "Wait, who's at 40%?
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    Who can we help?"
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    And they all band
    together and they all try
  • 3:09 - 3:09
    to help each other,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
and we just see those averages climb
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    from the beginning of the
year to the middle of the year
  • 3:14 - 3:15
to the end of the year.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
It's really inspiring because then again,
  • 3:17 - 3:19
the focus is on the learning.
  • 3:19 - 3:20
It's less about the grade and it's saying,
  • 3:20 - 3:22
"All right, what can we do?
  • 3:22 - 3:25
What do we need to do to be
able to get our averages up?"
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    And the averages is where
    the learning is coming from
  • 3:28 - 3:30
and it's just, it's wonderful to see.
