Adding Decimals

  • 0:01 - 0:09
    We need to add 7.056
    to 605.7 to 5.67.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Now when you're adding any
    number, you always want to
  • 0:11 - 0:14
make sure you line up numbers
    in the same place.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    And especially when you're
    dealing with decimals, the
  • 0:16 - 0:19
easiest way to do that is to
    just line up the decimals.
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    So let's do that.
  • 0:20 - 0:27
    So the first number right
    here is 7,056.
  • 0:27 - 0:37
    This second number right
    here is 605.7.
  • 0:37 - 0:43
    And then this last
    number is 5.67.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    So now we have everything
    lined up.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    Everything that's in the ones
    place is below or above
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    everything else in
    the ones place.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    Everything in the tenths place
    is below or above everything
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    else in the tenths place,
and so on and so forth.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    So we can add.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    So let's add it.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
So you want to start off
    in the smallest place.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    So you start off here.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    This is the tenths, hundredths,
    thousandths place.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    This is literally 6 thousandths,
    and you want to
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    add it to the other
    thousandths.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    There aren't any other
    thousandths.
  • 1:15 - 1:16
So you can view it two ways.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
You can just bring in this 6
down, or you could view this
  • 1:20 - 1:26
    605.7 as the same thing
    as 605.700.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
You can add as many zeroes to
the right of this decimal, to
  • 1:30 - 1:32
the right of the 7, as you want,
    since we're sitting on
  • 1:32 - 1:35
the right side of the decimal,
    without changing its value.
  • 1:35 - 1:36
You can also do it here.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
    This 5.67, you can write
    it as 5.670.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    When you write it like
    this, and you have 6
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    plus 0 plus 0 is 6.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    And you keep going.
  • 1:46 - 1:52
    5 plus 0 plus 7 is 12.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
You write the 2 in the
    hundredths place,
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    and carry the 1.
  • 1:56 - 2:02
    1 plus 0 plus 7 is
    8, plus 6 is 14.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    Write the 4, regroup the
    1 into the ones place.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    1 plus 7 is 8.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    8 plus 5 is 13.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    13 plus 5 is 18.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    This is 18.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    Carry or regroup the 1.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    1 plus 0 is just 1.
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    And then finally.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
You have the 6 in the
    hundreds place.
  • 2:25 - 2:29
Nothing gets added to it, so you
can just bring down that 6
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    and it's right there.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    And you don't want to
    forget the decimal.
  • 2:32 - 2:38
And so when you add the numbers
    you get 618.426, or
  • 2:38 - 2:43
    618 and 426 thousandths.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    And we're done.
