Discover how teachers are using course mastery

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    (upbeat music)
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    - When I first arrived
    at my school district,
  • 0:10 - 0:13
I learned that we had not
    yet set a specific curriculum
  • 0:13 - 0:16
to use in our math classrooms.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
As a result, I spoke with
    many of my colleagues
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    and found Khan academy to
    be one of those resources
  • 0:22 - 0:24
that they often used in their classroom
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    to help differentiate instruction.
  • 0:27 - 0:28
I decided to explore it on my own
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    from a learner's perspective
  • 0:30 - 0:34
    to see how students could
    use the videos, articles,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    and assignments to help better
    learn the academic standards.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    (upbeat music)
  • 0:42 - 0:43
    - So at the beginning of the year,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
I assigned the fourth grade course mastery
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    and that really sets the
    table for everything.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
In order to help me figure
    out where the kids are
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    with their learning process, I
use a lot of different tools.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
One that's really easy to use
at the beginning of the year
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    is just the course challenge.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    The kids are gonna come
    to me in fourth grade.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    They're gonna say, hmm,
    what do I already know?
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    And chances are, they're
    gonna start fourth grade.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Chances are, it's not
    gonna be a whole lot,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
but they can take that course challenge
  • 1:08 - 1:10
and say, "Oh, I do know this thing.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    I know a little bit
    about this content area
  • 1:13 - 1:15
and these other things, I have no idea."
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    And with our classroom community,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
one thing I really work on
    trying to build the scene
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    These are things that
    you're going to work on.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    These are the things
    that are coming up next.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
So if you don't know what, don't worry.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
That's why you're in fourth grade.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    (upbeat music)
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    - Another newer addition to Khan academy
  • 1:32 - 1:36
that I find really useful is
    the course mastery feature.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
    One part of this feature
    is the mastery challenges.
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    These challenges refresh
    every 12 hours or so
  • 1:44 - 1:47
and provide a quick snapshot of problems
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    based upon student's previous assignments.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
I love to use these in my
classroom as a little mini quiz.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
This is not something I count for a grade,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
but I use it to help spiral review.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
A lot of times it can be
    difficult for students
  • 2:02 - 2:05
to remember things throughout the year,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
but by using these short little quizzes,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
students are able to practice these skills
  • 2:10 - 2:13
that they've learned throughout the year
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    in a way that's not
    necessarily intimidating,
  • 2:16 - 2:20
but it's short and sweet and
    encourages them to do well.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    (upbeat music)
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    - I use course mastery to
get ready for the AP exam.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    I decided to use chorus
    mastery couple of years ago
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    when I realized that students
    can benefit from this
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    at their own time.
  • 2:39 - 2:44
So I decided to assign course
    mastery quarterly basis
  • 2:44 - 2:49
    instead of one big course
    mastery annual goal.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
So I decided to use it as a quarterly goal
  • 2:54 - 2:56
but I assigned the whole course master
  • 2:56 - 2:58
at the beginning of the year,
  • 2:58 - 3:03
    and I expected to complete
    about 20% per quarter.
  • 3:03 - 3:08
And I would give them a
goal of about 80% per year
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    before their AP exam.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
And I realized that their scores,
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    their AP scores significantly increased
  • 3:19 - 3:23
    for those students who
    completed their course mastery.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    So I think it was
    beneficial to my students.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    (upbeat music)
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    - In my classroom., I really
    like to use data binders,
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    and in these data binders,
  • 3:33 - 3:35
it seems like I have a
    chart for everything.
  • 3:35 - 3:39
So a couple of the charts that
I use in Khan academy deal
  • 3:39 - 3:43
    with the grade levels and
    then the fourth grade level.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    You see the difference between
    like the old school grades,
  • 3:45 - 3:48
if you got a bad grade and
    you got a zero percent,
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    it's gonna destroy your grade.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    But with the bar graph,
    it's really showing
  • 3:52 - 3:55
that this is learning and progress.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
So maybe I took the course challenge
  • 3:57 - 3:59
or maybe I took the unit
    test and did it horrible,
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    but it was a pre-test.
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    And I started at 8%
  • 4:03 - 4:05
and then we did some lessons
    and we did some learning,
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    then the student was
    getting better with it.
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    Now it was an 8%.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
Now we're at 20%, and now we take a quiz,
  • 4:12 - 4:13
and now we do some more learning
  • 4:13 - 4:17
    and then that continues
    to go higher and higher.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
But we also have a bulletin
    board that keeps track
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    of our progress as well.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    So throughout the class,
    we can start to see,
  • 4:23 - 4:25
"Oh, we're at 94% class average."
  • 4:25 - 4:26
And then a couple of kids who were like,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
"Oh, I can finish, I can finish."
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    And so they'll work really
hard to try to get that done.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    And it's like, this community
    is trying to come together
  • 4:33 - 4:36
and we're trying to strive for 100%.
