0:10 - 0:14and I think a lot of that is a reflection of Don's taste,

0:14 - 0:18belief in the entertainment and the quality of the films that we make here.

0:18 - 0:20ROB: He is the heart and soul of the place.

0:20 - 0:24He's been here longer than anybody else. He's stayed longer than anybody else.

0:24 - 0:28And I hope that he continues to stay well into the future.

0:32 - 0:36NARRATOR: Alumnus Don Hahn is universally recognized as one of the most successful
-
0:36 - 0:41animation producers of all time. His films have received numerous awards
-
0:41 - 0:44and have grossed over two billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

0:44 - 0:48At an early age, Don developed an interest in creative arts.
-
0:48 - 0:52At North Hollywood High School he was drum major for the marching band,
-
0:52 - 0:56a role he reprised at the Los Angeles Valley College.

0:56 - 1:00Entertaining the notion of becoming a professional orchestral percussionist,
-
1:00 - 1:03he enrolled at CSUN, where he majored in Music and played in
-
1:03 - 1:07the Jazz "A" Band. Prior to his senior year at Northridge,
-
1:07 - 1:10he landed a job at Disney's famed animation "morgue,"
-
1:10 - 1:13where he discovered that animation allowed one
-
1:13 - 1:16to blend art and music together in the same craft.

1:16 - 1:19JOEL: I remember at the end of the year when Don studied percussion with me,
-
1:19 - 1:22I asked him what he'd be doing in the summer.
-
1:22 - 1:25Don said he had just gotten a job on the Disney lot,
-
1:25 - 1:27and I recall him saying to me that he was going to be
-
1:27 - 1:30riding a bicycle around Disney delivering mail.
-
1:30 - 1:33And I thought, well let's see where that goes.
-
1:33 - 1:35And now we know. (laughs)
-
1:35 - 1:40By the early 1990s Don had produced the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast,
-
1:40 - 1:42which won the Golden Globe for Best Picture
-
1:42 - 1:46and became the first animated film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar
-
1:46 - 1:49by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
-
1:49 - 1:53His next film, The Lion King, broke box office records all over the world
-
1:53 - 1:57to become the top-grossing traditionally animated film in Disney history.

1:57 - 2:01ANDREAS: It's always been great having Don the producer of the film
-
2:01 - 2:04that you're animating on, because there are so many pressures.

2:04 - 2:07When you have somebody like Don who is supervising the whole thing,
-
2:07 - 2:10he kind of keeps you calm, because Don is very calm.

2:10 - 2:12TONY: The calm...
-
2:12 - 2:15JAMES: The calm in the storm.
-
2:15 - 2:18TONY: Actually, you put it anywhere in the storm and it stays calm.
-
2:18 - 2:22ANDREAS: You never see him angry or upset or chewing somebody up.
-
2:22 - 2:25ROGER: When things would go wrong, he'd go, "Well that's a mess! Isn't it?
-
2:25 - 2:27Let's see what we can do."
-
2:27 - 2:30There was always a sense of "can do, fix it, and let's laugh."
-
2:30 - 2:34And that is so valuable when you're making a movie.
-
2:34 - 2:36He made it fun.
-
2:36 - 2:39TONY: He's one of the most generous and giving guys.
-
2:39 - 2:43He makes you feel comfortable. He makes you feel special and unique.
-
2:43 - 2:47And he lies really well. So I appreciate that, Don.

2:47 - 2:51NARRATOR: Don made his directorial debut with the award-winning Waking Sleeping Beauty,
-
2:51 - 2:56a documentary on Disney's animation renaissance of the 1980s and 90s.

2:56 - 3:01In 2010 Don complete another documentary, Hand Held,
-
3:01 - 3:05which brought attention to pediatric AIDS and forgotten children
-
3:05 - 3:07in the former Soviet Bloc.

3:07 - 3:11Don also serves as Executive Producer of the Disney Nature Films,
-
3:11 - 3:13including Earth and Oceans.

3:13 - 3:16JOEL: I noticed in reading Don's credits recently that he's working on
-
3:16 - 3:21a forthcoming motion picture called Frankenweenie, and I'm trusting that
-
3:21 - 3:26it's not in reference to any past teachers he's been associated with at CSUN.

3:26 - 3:29NARRATOR: Don continues to stay close to CSUN.

3:29 - 3:32In 1999 he was featured commencement speaker.

3:32 - 3:35He has been a guest lecturer for the Animation program,
-
3:35 - 3:38where he has critiqued student reels and portfolios.

3:38 - 3:42Tonight, having easily reached the pinnacle of success in his field,
-
3:42 - 3:47his alma mater presents him with its Distinguished Alumni Award.

3:47 - 3:49PATTI: I cherish the years I worked with Don.

3:49 - 3:52He's an amazing person and friend, and I love him dearly,
-
3:52 - 3:54and Don, you deserve this honor.
