Distinguished Alumni Awards 2011: Don Hahn

  • 0:00 - 0:07
MIKE: Don is by far the best producer I think I've worked with in 20 years.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
MARK: He's produced some of the best films that we've done here at the studio
  • 0:10 - 0:14
and I think a lot of that is a reflection of Don's taste,
  • 0:14 - 0:18
belief in the entertainment and the quality of the films that we make here.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
ROB: He is the heart and soul of the place.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
He's been here longer than anybody else. He's stayed longer than anybody else.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
And I hope that he continues to stay well into the future.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    (music)
  • 0:32 - 0:36
NARRATOR: Alumnus Don Hahn is universally recognized as one of the most successful
  • 0:36 - 0:41
animation producers of all time. His films have received numerous awards
  • 0:41 - 0:44
and have grossed over two billion dollars at the worldwide box office.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
At an early age, Don developed an interest in creative arts.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
At North Hollywood High School he was drum major for the marching band,
  • 0:52 - 0:56
a role he reprised at the Los Angeles Valley College.
  • 0:56 - 1:00
Entertaining the notion of becoming a professional orchestral percussionist,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
he enrolled at CSUN, where he majored in Music and played in
  • 1:03 - 1:07
the Jazz "A" Band. Prior to his senior year at Northridge,
  • 1:07 - 1:10
he landed a job at Disney's famed animation "morgue,"
  • 1:10 - 1:13
where he discovered that animation allowed one
  • 1:13 - 1:16
to blend art and music together in the same craft.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
JOEL: I remember at the end of the year when Don studied percussion with me,
  • 1:19 - 1:22
I asked him what he'd be doing in the summer.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
Don said he had just gotten a job on the Disney lot,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
and I recall him saying to me that he was going to be
  • 1:27 - 1:30
riding a bicycle around Disney delivering mail.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
And I thought, well let's see where that goes.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    And now we know. (laughs)
  • 1:35 - 1:40
By the early 1990s Don had produced the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
which won the Golden Globe for Best Picture
  • 1:42 - 1:46
and became the first animated film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar
  • 1:46 - 1:49
by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
His next film, The Lion King, broke box office records all over the world
  • 1:53 - 1:57
to become the top-grossing traditionally animated film in Disney history.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
ANDREAS: It's always been great having Don the producer of the film
  • 2:01 - 2:04
that you're animating on, because there are so many pressures.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
When you have somebody like Don who is supervising the whole thing,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
he kind of keeps you calm, because Don is very calm.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    TONY: The calm...
  • 2:12 - 2:15
JAMES: The calm in the storm.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
TONY: Actually, you put it anywhere in the storm and it stays calm.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
ANDREAS: You never see him angry or upset or chewing somebody up.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
ROGER: When things would go wrong, he'd go, "Well that's a mess! Isn't it?
  • 2:25 - 2:27
Let's see what we can do."
  • 2:27 - 2:30
There was always a sense of "can do, fix it, and let's laugh."
  • 2:30 - 2:34
And that is so valuable when you're making a movie.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    He made it fun.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
TONY: He's one of the most generous and giving guys.
  • 2:39 - 2:43
He makes you feel comfortable. He makes you feel special and unique.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
And he lies really well. So I appreciate that, Don.
  • 2:47 - 2:51

Don also serves as Executive Producer of the Disney Nature Films,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    including Earth and Oceans.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
JOEL: I noticed in reading Don's credits recently that he's working on
  • 3:16 - 3:21
a forthcoming motion picture called Frankenweenie, and I'm trusting that
  • 3:21 - 3:26
it's not in reference to any past teachers he's been associated with at CSUN.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
NARRATOR: Don continues to stay close to CSUN.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
In 1999 he was featured commencement speaker.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
He has been a guest lecturer for the Animation program,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
where he has critiqued student reels and portfolios.
  • 3:38 - 3:42
Tonight, having easily reached the pinnacle of success in his field,
  • 3:42 - 3:47
his alma mater presents him with its Distinguished Alumni Award.
