Captioning Lecture Capture Videos: A Promising Teaching Practice

  • 0:02 - 0:05
    >> Jaime Diaz: It's about accessibility.
    I mean, you use,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
people have asked me what do you use
    to teach? What technology?
  • 0:08 - 0:16
    And I answer sometimes,
    with just "Yes." Anything.
  • 0:16 - 0:22
    >> Narrator: One of the newest teaching tools
is video capture services such as Panopto.
  • 0:22 - 0:27
They allow faculty to easily record their
lectures and post them on a Web page
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    where students can
    view them after class.
  • 0:28 - 0:35
    >> Jaime Diaz in class: And look at how he
says this. So– it wasn't unpleasant.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    It was an intoxication
    but it wasn't unpleasant.
  • 0:37 - 0:42
    And... stream of fantastic
    pictures, extraordinary shapes
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    >> Narrator: Panopto allows captions to be
    added to the recorded lectures.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
Those captions are a necessity for students
    with hearing impairments.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    >> Jaime Diaz in class:
    kaleidoscopic display of colors,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    this kaleidoscopic thing comes up
    often and often, right?
  • 0:55 - 0:59
So this is like, wow, this is tremendous,
but he didn't know what was going on.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
    >> Erika: Me, as a deaf person, I'm missing
out probably three-fourths of the information
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    that's out there.
  • 1:06 - 1:11
So captioning is a big thing for me because
that's where I get all the information.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    >> Jaime Diaz: I was surprised when I canvassed
    my students,
  • 1:20 - 1:26
and over 30% said they were using the captioning
  • 1:26 - 1:32
and I know that there's not 30% of hearing
    impaired or need for it.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
And I asked a couple of students,
  • 1:34 - 1:39
and they said they wanted to see the words
as well as hear the words.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    >> Erica: Other reasons why students like
    me use Panopto
  • 1:44 - 1:49
is because he talks really fast in the lecture
because we have so much material to cover,
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    so when I miss something
I write down the time on my notebook
  • 1:53 - 1:57
and I go back to the Panopto recording so
that I can listen to it again.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
And I'm like, "Oh, so that's what he was saying,"
and I understand the whole material better.
  • 2:02 - 2:08
    >> Steven: I do use the Panopto videos,
    particularly when I'm reviewing material.
  • 2:08 - 2:13
I like to, as I'm reading through the lecture
slides, I like to replay the lecture videos
  • 2:13 - 2:17
to just reinforce and make sure I'm picking
    up any supplemental information
  • 2:17 - 2:20
that he says while he's reading through it.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
    >> Sheryl Burgstahler: Other key people can
    benefit from the combination
  • 2:24 - 2:29
of the visual text along with the audio.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    This includes people who are
    English language learners
  • 2:32 - 2:35
that would like to hear the word
as well as see the word.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    >> Aditya: I don't think most of the,
all the students do understand all the time
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    what the professor is talking.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
It is sometimes necessary to have captions
  • 2:43 - 2:47
so that we can actually jot down things
    by having a visual.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    >> Sheryl Burgstahler: Also benefiting from that
  • 2:49 - 2:52
are students who have some types of
    learning disabilities
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    that can benefit from this
    multimodal presentation
  • 2:56 - 3:01
and students that want to learn the
    spelling of a particular word.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    >> Steven: One is, it reinforces
    what I'm hearing
  • 3:04 - 3:08
so I'm seeing it both visually
    and getting it auditorily,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    so we're hitting multiple systems
    at the same time,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    creating stronger associations.
  • 3:12 - 3:17
Second is, a lot of times
    I can have difficulty understanding
  • 3:17 - 3:22
exactly what some people are saying because
when you get into technical terms and jargon
  • 3:22 - 3:26
they're talking so quickly it can be very
    hard to keep track of.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
So being able to read it as I'm hearing it
  • 3:29 - 3:33
further reinforces it and also helps me with
    grammar and spelling.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    >> Narration: Captions can be useful to any
student trying to watch the video
  • 3:37 - 3:41
    in a loud room or
in a room that's very quiet.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
    >> Eelane: I use captions
when I'm in a quiet library
  • 3:45 - 3:49
and I don't want to turn up the volume too
loud so I turn on captions
  • 3:49 - 3:52
and I can see the words
    instead of hearing them.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    >> Narration: Panopto also enables students
    to do a keyword search
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    to find every instance when
a word appears in the lecture
  • 3:59 - 4:02
and to fast-forward to that moment.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
    >> Sheryl Burgstahler: For instance you might
want to look through those captions,
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    search through the captions,
  • 4:07 - 4:13
to find a particular part in the video where
    your instructor presented something
  • 4:13 - 4:17
that you want to listen to again
without listening to the whole video.
  • 4:17 - 4:21
    >> Richard Ladner: If you have the captions
now you have a way of searching.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
    You can search the video
to find the word you're looking for
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    and then play that little
    piece of video back.
  • 4:28 - 4:35
    So everybody benefits from captions
because they allow for search of video.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    >> Jaime Diaz: You just have to
    try different things,
  • 4:41 - 4:45
and so as tools come up
    you should try them
  • 4:45 - 4:49
to see if in fact that might
    maybe replace a tool
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    or might hit a population
    that you weren't hitting before.
  • 4:53 - 4:57
As a teacher, I have the obligation
    of reaching those students.
