International Translation Day : My Story with Translation

  • 0:01 - 0:05
Hello! I'm Ghalia, 25 years old,
    from Damascus, Syria.
  • 0:05 - 0:11
Well, my story in TED started
    in October 2013,
  • 0:11 - 0:16
when I was chatting to a friend of mine
and we were talking about things
  • 0:16 - 0:19
that help us to use our time
    in the right way.
  • 0:19 - 0:24
So he told me that he is
    translating with TED: TED Talks,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
and TED Education videos into Arabic,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
and then he convinced me to apply.
  • 0:30 - 0:34
I applied to Amara and TED
    and got accepted,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
but I got busy with my collage and work.
  • 0:38 - 0:44
After about 2 or 3 months,
I decided that it's time to start.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
So, he told me how to start
    and I started.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    I can't express my feelings
  • 0:51 - 0:56
when I finished the very first video
    to me in TED
  • 0:57 - 1:01
and I viewed it to him and he told me that
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    it was a great start.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    I continued translating
    TED Education videos
  • 1:07 - 1:11
and then after one and a half year
  • 1:11 - 1:16
    I decided to apply for
    the Language Coordinators.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    I talked to many LCs
    to support my application
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    and then I got accepted.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    After that I decided that
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    I should take more responsibilites
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    than just reviewing and
    approving the talks.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
So, I started to leave some notes
    for the translators
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    and reply their messages
  • 1:41 - 1:46
    and leave them grammar posts
    on the Facebook group.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
And we did a remarkable thing
  • 1:49 - 1:53
When I saw that the Arabic language
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    was improved in few months.
  • 1:59 - 2:04
After that, I volunteered with a website
    called "4Electron"
  • 2:04 - 2:07
and I translated many articles with them.
  • 2:08 - 2:14
Then I applied for Amara-On-Demand job
    and I got accepted.
  • 2:16 - 2:22
I work also as a freelancer translator
    from English to Arabic.
  • 2:23 - 2:29
But really, working with TED was
the most amazing thing I did.
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    This experience changed my life.
    Why?
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    Because I'm not only
    transferring the knowledge
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    from English to Arabic
  • 2:41 - 2:45
but I'm also getting inspired by
    the videos I'm watching
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    everytime I translate a video.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
That's why I decided to create a community
  • 2:53 - 2:58
    for Syrian TED Translators
    and I'm working on it.
  • 2:58 - 3:02
And it's amazing to see people
    joining this community
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    and enjoying what we're doing.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    Why I see that translation is important;
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    to transform knowledge
    from language to another,
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    from culture to another,
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    is a very important thing,
  • 3:22 - 3:27
because when you get inspired by
    thoughts from other countries
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    other cultures, other languages,
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    you expand your horizons.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
This is why I insisted eveyday
    more and more
  • 3:39 - 3:42
to transform all these amazing ideas
    in TED
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    into Arabic,
  • 3:43 - 3:47
because our community needs these ideas
  • 3:47 - 3:51
very much in the current time.
  • 3:52 - 4:01
You should not be a super human
to do a super job or to have super ideas,
  • 4:01 - 4:04
you just have to believe that you have it.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
This is what I learned from TED talks
  • 4:08 - 4:12
and from the many things that I translated
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    during the last 3 years.
  • 4:16 - 4:21
I'm really thankful for my friend
    who told me about TED.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
And I'm really thankful for the LCs
    who supported me
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    when I applied for
    the Language Coordinators.
  • 4:29 - 4:34
And I'm very thankful for every single one
  • 4:34 - 4:39
who put his knowledge in these
    amazing videos.
