Why Didn't You Wear Your Mask? | Pre-Intermediate Lesson | ChinesePod

  • 0:01 - 0:04

    大家好,欢迎回到中文播客。
  • 0:04 - 0:05
    我是Alice。
  • 0:05 - 0:06
    And I'm Joe.
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    Welcome back to ChinesePod.
  • 0:07 - 0:13
    Joe,你有没有发现大家走在路上都会戴一个东西?
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    你是说手机吗?
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    不是,是说这个。
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    Ah, we're speaking about Masks.
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    What's that in Chinese?
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    口罩
    (Kǒu zhào)
  • 0:25 - 0:25
    然后,
  • 0:25 - 0:30
    进商场的时候,大家都需要量额温
(Jìn shāng chǎng de shí hòu dà jiā dōu xū yào liàng é wēn)
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    Oh yes, of course.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
Given the recent pandemic, we have to
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    take temperatures pretty much everywhere.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
When you go to the office, when you go to
  • 0:36 - 0:38
the mall, with those temperature guns.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
And that's what we're talking about today.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    那我们开始吧!
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    早上好
    (Zǎo shang hǎo)
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    早。诶?你的口罩呢?
(Zǎo Éi Nǐ de kǒuzhào ne)
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    在包里呢
    (Zài bāo lǐ ne)
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    放包里有什么用?戴起来
(Fàng bāo li yǒu shé me yòng Dài qǐ lái)
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    是、是、是,瞧把你紧张的
(Shì shì shì qiáo bǎ nǐ jǐn zhāng de)
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    来,我量个额温,三十六度五
(Lái wǒ liàng gè é wēn sān shí liù dù wǔ)
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    你瞧,不是没烧吗?别紧张
(Nǐ qiáo bù shì méi shāo ma Bié jǐn zhāng)
  • 1:05 - 1:09
    还是要小心,来,用酒精消毒双手
(Hái shì yào xiǎo xīn lái yòng jiǔ jīng xiāo dú shuāng shǒu)
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    好、好、好
    (Hǎo hǎo hǎo)
  • 1:15 - 1:17
Now that we've listened to the dialogue,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
let's break it down line by line.
  • 1:20 - 1:27
    早上好
    Good morning.
  • 1:27 - 1:44
    早。诶?你的口罩呢?
Morning... Eh? Where is your mask?
  • 1:44 - 1:52
    在包里呢
    In the bag.
  • 1:52 - 2:12
    放包里有什么用?戴起来
What's the point of having it in the bag? Put it on.
  • 2:12 - 2:29
    是、是、是,瞧把你紧张的
Right, right, right. Am I making you nervous?
  • 2:29 - 2:52
    来,我量个额温,三十六度五
Come, let me take the temperature. 36.5
  • 2:52 - 3:13
    你瞧,不是没烧吗?别紧张
You see? Am I having a fever? No need to be nervous.
  • 3:14 - 3:42
    还是要小心,来,用酒精消毒双手
We still have to be careful. Come, use some alcohol to disinfect your hands.
  • 3:42 - 3:52
    好、好、好
    Okay, okay, okay.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
So this dialogue is happening in the morning
  • 3:54 - 3:56
and you can probably tell that the people
  • 3:56 - 3:58
involved are kind of familiar with each other,
  • 3:58 - 4:01
because they're not too formal here.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    有点像是同事在办公室里。
  • 4:05 - 4:06
So maybe colleagues in the office,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
or the front desk and a colleague,
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    something like that.
  • 4:09 - 4:10
    And the person the beginning
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    is asking for the mask.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    你的口罩呢?
  • 4:15 - 4:16
So we have the new vocabulary
  • 4:16 - 4:17
    for "mask" which was
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    口罩
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    So
  • 4:20 - 4:20

    (Kǒu)
  • 4:20 - 4:21
    is "the mouth"
  • 4:21 - 4:22

    (Zhào)
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    is "a cover".
  • 4:23 - 4:25
So "the mouth, cover", "a mask".
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    我们现在也会看到
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    面罩
    (Miàn zhào)
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    Okay, "面" is...
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    “脸”的意思。
  • 4:33 - 4:36
So this is "a face cover".
  • 4:36 - 4:39
Kind of like frontline health workers,
  • 4:39 - 4:40
    they have the
  • 4:40 - 4:41
    面罩
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    Like, this kind of shield-like,
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    mask cover, face cover.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
Okay so this will be another one.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
And in the question for that mask, the
  • 4:50 - 4:52
person uses a particle in the end.
  • 4:53 - 4:53

    (ne)
  • 4:54 - 4:54
    So this
  • 4:54 - 4:55
  • 4:55 - 4:57
is used for asking questions, similar
  • 4:57 - 4:58
to the English ones, we have like
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    "and, that and that?"
  • 5:00 - 5:02
So used to either change a topic or
  • 5:02 - 5:05
to return questions to the sender,
  • 5:05 - 5:07
like "and, you and that and that?"
  • 5:07 - 5:08
  • 5:08 - 5:09
    in the end.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
And there's another use of it which
  • 5:11 - 5:12
we have in the next sentence.
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    在包里呢
    (Zài bāo lǐ ne)
  • 5:14 - 5:17
So the intonation was a little different.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
What.. can you tell me the first one
  • 5:19 - 5:20
for the question one more time?
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    第一个是
  • 5:21 - 5:22
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    第二个是
  • 5:24 - 5:25
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    Okay the second one
  • 5:26 - 5:27
  • 5:27 - 5:29
    is more making statements to
  • 5:29 - 5:31
    highlight and give emphasis.
  • 5:31 - 5:32
So here it's like, "it's in the bag".
  • 5:33 - 5:37
    再来个例句,我常常听Joe说的话。
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    还早呢,我不想回家
(Hái zǎo ne, wǒ bù xiǎng huí jiā)
  • 5:41 - 5:43
Come on I'm not saying it that often.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
But the sentence here was "it's still early,
  • 5:45 - 5:47
I don't want to go back home".
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    And we used the
  • 5:48 - 5:48
  • 5:48 - 5:50
to highlight this "it's still early", part, "还早呢".
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    或者,我们可以说,
  • 5:53 - 5:57
    我在开会呢,晚点给你打电话
(Wǒ zài kāi huì ne, wǎn diǎn gěi nǐ dǎ diàn huà)
  • 5:57 - 5:59
So when somebody calls you during a meeting,
  • 5:59 - 6:01
you can tell them, "I'm still in a meeting,
  • 6:01 - 6:03
I will call you back later".
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    再来,他说
  • 6:05 - 6:09
    放包里有什么用,戴起来
  • 6:09 - 6:12
So it's like, "what use does it have in your bag, put it on".
  • 6:12 - 6:14
And then he continues with a quite
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    difficult sentence afterwards,
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    what was that?
  • 6:18 - 6:19
    瞧把你紧张的
(Qiáo bǎ nǐ jǐn zhāng de)
  • 6:19 - 6:20
    So this
  • 6:20 - 6:21

    (Qiáo)
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    what does it mean?
  • 6:22 - 6:23
  • 6:23 - 6:24
    means "看".
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    Ah, so "see" or "look".
  • 6:27 - 6:31
    你瞧,我把你紧张的
(Nǐ qiáo wǒ bǎ nǐ jǐn zhāng de)
  • 6:31 - 6:35
Ah, okay, so it's like "you see, I made you nervous".
  • 6:36 - 6:38
So this "I made you nervous" part, there's
  • 6:38 - 6:40
another structure that you have to know
  • 6:40 - 6:42
in Chinese which is using the
  • 6:42 - 6:42

    (Bǎ)
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    particle.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
And this particle is used to put the focus
  • 6:45 - 6:47
of a sentence more on the result.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
So how we use this, is normally we would
  • 6:49 - 6:51
say "把" then plus the person or the
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    general topic of the sentence.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
And then afterwards we have the result,
  • 6:55 - 6:57
So here the result would be "nervous".
  • 6:58 - 6:58
    没错,
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    把你紧张的
  • 7:00 - 7:02
    我们也可以说,
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    把你吓的
    (Bǎ nǐ xià de)
  • 7:04 - 7:05
So that would be, "you scared me".
  • 7:06 - 7:06
    或者,
  • 7:06 - 7:08
    把你激动的
    (Bǎ nǐ jīdòng de)
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    "Make me excited".
  • 7:10 - 7:10
    或者
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    把你高兴的
    (Bǎ nǐ gāo xìng de)
  • 7:12 - 7:14
Or "make me happy", of course.
  • 7:15 - 7:18
So here he used this question, like "I am...",
  • 7:18 - 7:20
or the sentence, "I'm making you nervous",
  • 7:20 - 7:22
to tease that other person little bit, but then
  • 7:22 - 7:24
of course he puts on the mask and
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    still gets his temperature taken.
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    我量个额温
  • 7:28 - 7:30
So here we have the verb
  • 7:30 - 7:32

    (Liáng)
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    是可以量出数字的东西。
  • 7:35 - 7:37
Okay, so this is used to say "measure",
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    and of course measuring something
  • 7:38 - 7:40
that is has units or numbers.
  • 7:40 - 7:42
So what would be some examples
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    that we can measure?
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    像是量身高
    (Xiàng shì liáng shēn gāo)
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    So "the height".
  • 7:47 - 7:48
    量体重
    (Liàng tǐ zhòng)
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    "The weight".
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    量血压
    (Liàng xuè yā)
  • 7:52 - 7:53
    "Blood pressure".
  • 7:54 - 7:54
    或者
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    量额温
    (Liàng é wēn)
  • 7:56 - 7:58
Ah, that was in the dialogue, so that was
  • 7:58 - 7:59

    (É)
  • 7:59 - 7:59

    (Wēn)
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    额头的温度
  • 8:02 - 8:04
So that's "the forehead temperature", together
  • 8:04 - 8:05
    额温
  • 8:06 - 8:09
And what is the temperature now?
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    三十六度五
    (Sān shí liù dù wǔ)
  • 8:12 - 8:14
    或者我们可以说
  • 8:14 - 8:16
    三十六点五度
(Sān shí liù diǎn wǔ dù)
  • 8:17 - 8:21
So those would be two ways of saying "36.5 degrees celcius".
  • 8:21 - 8:22
What are the two ways again?
  • 8:22 - 8:23
    我们可以说,
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    三十六度五
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    或者
  • 8:26 - 8:29
    三十六点五度
  • 8:29 - 8:31
So then the teasing continues, and
  • 8:31 - 8:32
this colleague actually uses the verb
  • 8:32 - 8:33
  • 8:33 - 8:34
    one more time.
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    你瞧,不是没烧吗?
  • 8:38 - 8:40
So he uses this question style of "不是..."
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    something, something, "吗", and this
  • 8:42 - 8:44
question style that was used for
  • 8:44 - 8:46
    rhetorical questions or things that
  • 8:46 - 8:47
you want to remind somebody of.
  • 8:47 - 8:52
    嗯。“不是吗?”是拿来点出大家都知道的事情。
  • 8:52 - 8:54
So sometimes I hear questions using
  • 8:54 - 8:57
this style when I forget things.
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    我不是已经告诉你了吗?
(Wǒ bùshì yǐjīng gàosù nǐle ma?)
  • 9:00 - 9:02
"Haven't I told you this already?"
  • 9:02 - 9:03
    Yeah, that's a rhetorical question.
  • 9:04 - 9:06
Or, let's say I bought a new phone which
  • 9:06 - 9:08
is maybe on the more expensive side,
  • 9:08 - 9:09
    what could you say?
  • 9:10 - 9:11
    这手机不是很贵吗?
(Zhè shǒu jī bù shì hěn guì ma)
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    "Isn't this quite expensive?"
  • 9:14 - 9:16
And of course, what you wanna say with
  • 9:16 - 9:18
this is maybe, "how can you afford this?"
  • 9:19 - 9:21
So, even with all the teasing that's
  • 9:21 - 9:23
going on here, we still according to
  • 9:23 - 9:25
the SOP, have to go on.
  • 9:25 - 9:27
So the first one was putting a mask on,
  • 9:27 - 9:28
next one is taking the temperatures,
  • 9:28 - 9:29
    and then?
  • 9:29 - 9:32
    用酒精消毒双手
(Yòng jiǔ jīng xiāo dú shuāng shǒu)
  • 9:32 - 9:35
So "to use alcohol to disinfect your hands".
  • 9:35 - 9:37
And let's talk about the vocabulary here,
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    the first one was...
  • 9:38 - 9:39
    酒精
    (Jiǔ jīng)
  • 9:40 - 9:42
Which is "alcohol",so either can be
  • 9:42 - 9:43
    disinfectant alcohol or the
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    actual alcohol in the liquor.
  • 9:45 - 9:53
    就像是伏特加有四十到五十度的酒精浓度。
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    下一个生词,
  • 9:55 - 9:56
    消毒
    (Xiāo dú)
  • 9:57 - 9:57

    (Xiāo)
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    means "to eliminate".
  • 9:59 - 10:00

    (Dú)
  • 10:00 - 10:01
    means "poison".
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    So, "to disinfect".
  • 10:03 - 10:05
And what do we disinfected here?
  • 10:05 - 10:06
    Our hands of course.
  • 10:07 - 10:07
    双手
    (Shuāng shǒu)
  • 10:07 - 10:08
    So what does
  • 10:08 - 10:09

    (Shuāng)
  • 10:09 - 10:10
    mean here?
  • 10:10 - 10:10
  • 10:10 - 10:13
    的意思是“两只”。
  • 10:13 - 10:15
Okay, so "a pair of something".
  • 10:15 - 10:17
So here was "a pair of hands",
  • 10:17 - 10:17
    双手
  • 10:17 - 10:20
What other pairs do we have?
  • 10:20 - 10:20
    像是
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    双眼
    (Shuāng yǎn)
  • 10:22 - 10:23
    "A pair of eyes"
  • 10:24 - 10:25
    or
  • 10:25 - 10:26
    双脚
    (Shuāng jiǎo)
  • 10:26 - 10:27
    "Two feet".
  • 10:28 - 10:29
    或者
  • 10:29 - 10:30
    双亲
    (Shuāng qīn)
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    That would be "my parents".
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    父母亲
  • 10:35 - 10:37
Okay, so after we've discussed all this,
  • 10:37 - 10:39
let's go and check out the dialogue again.
  • 10:44 - 10:45
    早上好
  • 10:45 - 10:48
    早。诶?你的口罩呢?
  • 10:48 - 10:49
    在包里呢
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    放包里有什么用?戴起来
  • 10:51 - 10:53
    是、是、是,瞧把你紧张的
  • 10:55 - 10:59
    来,我量个额温,三十六度五
  • 10:59 - 11:02
    你瞧,不是没烧吗?别紧张
  • 11:02 - 11:06
    还是要小心,来,用酒精消毒双手
  • 11:06 - 11:07
    好、好、好
  • 11:11 - 11:13
In this class we have talked about the words
  • 11:13 - 11:14
that are especially important in the
  • 11:14 - 11:16
recent times of the current pandemic.
  • 11:16 - 11:19
For instance we have talked about masks.
  • 11:19 - 11:20
    口罩
  • 11:20 - 11:23
Or we had the word for taking forehead temperature.
  • 11:24 - 11:25
    量额温
  • 11:25 - 11:27
    And disinfect your hands.
  • 11:27 - 11:30
    用酒精消毒双手
  • 11:31 - 11:32
Additionally, you have learned how to ask
