-
Hey welcome back, hopefully you did that
-
task for me, I look forward to
-
seeing your answers.
-
We're gonna now look at key features
-
and that's the first thing you read when
-
you open an information report.
-
What are key features? I'm just going to
-
try and shrink my head down but don't
-
think it works, oh well.
-
Just imagine that you can see the whole
-
writing.
-
So key features are a detailed
-
description of what
-
the animal that you're looking at looks
-
like and they can include details like
-
the size, remember we're Australian so we
-
read in centimeters and meters.
-
The colour of the animal,
-
it's scientific name,
-
perhaps it has some special features.
-
For example a platypus,
-
one of either the male or the female,
-
have special poisonous spurs on the
-
webbed feet
-
and then you could also include things
-
that it does. What does it do.
-
Another important thing to do when you
-
are writing about your key features of
-
your animal, is make sure that it is
-
written in your own words.
-
Alright and then
-
record where you got your information
-
from, but we'll look at that in a few
-
slides time.
-
So here's one I did
-
on koalas.
-
So koalas key features.
-
The koala, I'm going to have a go at
-
saying the scientific name,
-
not very good at it, but I'm going to
-
have a try anyway,
-
is phascolarctos cinereus,
-
is an arboreal, which means tree dwelling
-
herbivorous (plant eating) marsupial.
-
Koalas are well known for their large
-
round head,
-
big furry ears
-
and black nose.
-
Their fur is usually grey brown in colour
-
with white fur on the chest and inner arms, ears
-
and bottom.
-
They have no fur on their nose
-
or on the palms of their paws.
-
In hindsight, I could have probably told
-
you how big they are in centimeters,
-
so that would be a wish for my
-
key features of a koala.
-
What I'm going to get you to do now is
-
listed, we did some
-
when we're at school
-
and what I'm going to get you to do is
-
you're going to read their paragraphs,
-
the key features of the animal that
-
they chose
-
and then I would like for you to give me
-
two stars and a wish. So I've done an
-
example just here and the first one
-
we're going to do is chipmunks.
-
Chipmunks are squirrel-sized mammals
-
that have light brown fur, small ears
-
and small legs and arms.
-
A chipmunk also has a fat body that
-
connects to its legs and arms.
-
So after reading that I'm going to think
-
about what
-
would be good to be included in a key
-
feature paragraph and
-
what I like about this, is that it has
-
some technical language. So it's used the
-
word mammal, and I thought that was great.
-
I also liked that they you used some
-
adjectives to describe the chipmunk.
-
So for example you use that had a fat body,
-
you didn't just say
-
body. So that was great but
-
a wish for it is
-
I would like for someone who didn't know
-
what a squirrel was, because remember we
-
live in Australia, we don't have
-
squirrels in Australia.
-
It might be helpful to give them the
-
measurements
-
in centimeters so the reader can help
-
it'll help the reader visualize it in
-
their head a little bit more.
-
So then what I would ask this person
-
that wrote about chipmunks to do would
-
be go back and incorporate that
-
feedback into their work. Maybe they
-
could add some more technical language.
-
Maybe they could add some more
-
adjectives, but then I would really hope
-
that they would be able to tell me in
-
centimeters how
-
big a chipmunk was, they're not very big
-
I don't think.
-
So the next couple, there's one on pandas.
-
I'll read it to you,
-
panda's are a black and white striped
-
bear. Sometimes they are very lazy.
-
From ancient China until the
-
present, people have always loved pandas.
-
Whether in popular snacks, animated films
-
or more, the world can't seem to get
-
enough of these fuzzy creatures.
-
So, I need you to look at that paragraph and
-
think, has it
-
described what it looks like?
-
Is there a measurement?
-
Does it have perhaps a scientific name?
-
What's one thing that you really liked
-
about it?
-
What's another thing that you liked
-
about it and then what is a wish?
-
And there are another
-
two of these after this one, there's one
-
on polar bears,
-
and then one on koalas
-
which I would love for you to put in two
-
stars and a wish for.
-
Then I'll come and talk to you again
-
and we'll talk about the bibliography.
-
So your task now is to
-
read over
-
those three different animals and the
-
key features that people have
-
written about and give them some
-
feedback and I'll see you on the
-
bibliography page.
-
Thank you.
