    The first question:

    Are you in love?
  • Not Synced
    Are you still in love?
  • Not Synced
    Do you want to reconect with the person who used to be the one you love?

    Do you think that he or she is happier than you are now?
  • Not Synced
    Do you havethe time for each other or are you both too busy?
  • Not Synced
    Have you been able to preserve your freshness and your beauty
  • Not Synced
    for yourself and for the other person?
  • Not Synced
    Remember the other person, maybe your partner
  • Not Synced
    maybe your father
  • Not Synced
    maybe your son, your daughter or your mother.

    Are you able to offer him/her freshness and beauty everyday?

    Do you know how to handle the suffering

    within yourself?

    Are you able to help handle the suffering in the other person?

    Do you understand your own suffering and their roots?

    Are you able to understand the suffering in the other person?

    Do you have the capcity to help the other person suffer less?

    Have you learned a way to calm down your painful feelings and emotions?

    Do you have the time to listen to yourself, your suffering, your dificulties, your deepest desire?

    Do you know how to nourish your love everyday?

    Have you ever met a person who is truly happy?

    Dear friends, yesterday just finished

    the retreat
  • Not Synced
    And in the begnning of the retreat
  • Not Synced
    these questions
  • Not Synced
    have been asked.
  • Not Synced
    This year, the retreat only last four days,
  • Not Synced
    instead of five days
  • Not Synced
    like the one before.
  • Not Synced
    But during four days,
  • Not Synced
    the four days, we have learned
  • Not Synced
    quiet a lot of things.
  • Not Synced
    The first thing we learned
  • Not Synced
    was how to breath,
  • Not Synced
    and how to walk
  • Not Synced
    so that every breath and every step,
  • Not Synced
    can help release the tention in our body.
  • Not Synced
    Everyday we went on a walking meditation together.
  • Not Synced
    1300 people walking together,
  • Not Synced
    for one hour.
  • Not Synced
    We combine our breath with our steps.
  • Not Synced
    We learn to walk in such way,
  • Not Synced
    that every step could help us,
  • Not Synced
    release the tention in our body.
  • Not Synced
    And during the four days when we need to go
  • Not Synced
    from one place to another place
  • Not Synced
    we always applied a technic called mindfull walking.
  • Not Synced
    Mindfull walking is walking in such way that we arrive,
  • Not Synced
    with every step.
  • Not Synced
    We arrive in the here and now.
  • Not Synced
    Because the Buddha said the past is already gone
  • Not Synced
    and the future is not yet there.
  • Not Synced
    There is only one moment where life is truly avaible
  • Not Synced
    it's the present moment
  • Not Synced
    And that is why each step should bring us hope to the present moment,
  • Not Synced
    for us to encounter life
  • Not Synced
    and all wonders of life,
  • Not Synced
    that are avaible in that moment.
  • Not Synced
    And every step, like every breath
  • Not Synced
    help us to get in touch
  • Not Synced
    with the wonders of life
  • Not Synced
    in us and around us,
  • Not Synced
    that are nourishing and healing.
  • Not Synced
    Everytime we breath in mindfully,
  • Not Synced
    we bring our mind home to our body.
  • Not Synced
    And when the mind is with the body,
  • Not Synced
    they are well estabilished in the here and now.
  • Not Synced
    In that moment we are fully present,
  • Not Synced
    we are fully alive.
  • Not Synced
    We can get in touch
  • Not Synced
    with the wonders of life
  • Not Synced
    that have the power
  • Not Synced
    to help us heal
  • Not Synced
    and transform.
  • Not Synced
    During these four days,
  • Not Synced
    we also have learned how
  • Not Synced
    to breath and to connect
  • Not Synced
    and to get in touch with the suffering in us.
  • Not Synced
    Everytime a painful felling
  • Not Synced
    or a painful emotion arises
  • Not Synced
    we know how to breath in and out mindfully,
  • Not Synced
    in order to be able to recognize,
  • Not Synced
    and embrace tenderly
  • Not Synced
    that painful felling or emotion.
  • Not Synced
    In that way we are able to calm down,
  • Not Synced
    the painful felling
  • Not Synced
    the painful emotion
  • Not Synced
    and suffer less
  • Not Synced
    after a few minutes of practice.
  • Not Synced
    And during sitting meditation,
  • Not Synced
    we try our best to listen
  • Not Synced
    to the suffering within ourselves.
  • Not Synced
    We learn to understand the suffering within ourselves,
  • Not Synced
    in order to help us understanding the suffering
  • Not Synced
    in our father, or mother or ancestors
  • Not Synced
    in our society.
  • Not Synced
    And we practice so that we can
  • Not Synced
    recognize the suffering, the dificulties in the other person.
  • Not Synced
    That person may be our mother, our father, our husband, our wife
  • Not Synced
    our daughter or our son,
  • Not Synced
    We know
  • Not Synced
    that if
  • Not Synced
    we can recognize the pain
  • Not Synced
    the suffering in him/her,
  • Not Synced
    we'll no longer be angry
  • Not Synced
    at him/her.
  • Not Synced
    Because understanding suffering
  • Not Synced
    we'll always bring about compassion
  • Not Synced
    and forgiveness.
  • Not Synced
    We learn to look
  • Not Synced
    at the other person
  • Not Synced
    in such a way that we can recognize
  • Not Synced
    the suffering in him/her.
  • Not Synced
    And the result is that
  • Not Synced
    when we have seen the suffering in that person,
  • Not Synced
    we are no longer angry at him/her.
  • Not Synced
    We do not want to blame or punish the other person anymore
  • Not Synced
    In fact, we want to do something
  • Not Synced
    or to say something
  • Not Synced
    in order to help him or her,
  • Not Synced
    suffer less.
  • Not Synced
    When there is compassion in our heart,
  • Not Synced
    we are able to use the practice
  • Not Synced
    of love and speech,
  • Not Synced
    and compassionate listening
  • Not Synced
    in order to help
  • Not Synced
    restore communication
  • Not Synced
    within us,
  • Not Synced
    and the other person,
  • Not Synced
    and bring about reconcilation.
  • Not Synced
    We only need to practice for five days,
  • Not Synced
    in order to have
  • Not Synced
    enough compassion and understanding
  • Not Synced
    in our heart.
  • Not Synced
    And on the fourth day or fifth day
  • Not Synced
    we can already
  • Not Synced
    practice compassionate listening and loving speech.
  • Not Synced
    Compassionate listening is the practice
  • Not Synced
    of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara
  • Not Synced
    If know how to listen with compassion,
  • Not Synced
    you can help the other person suffer less,
  • Not Synced
    just after one hour of listening.
  • Not Synced
    If we train ourselves
  • Not Synced
    in the art of
  • Not Synced
    compassionate listening
  • Not Synced
    in four or five days,
  • Not Synced
    we'll be able to do like Quan Yin,
  • Not Synced
    you can listen to him or to her with compassion.
  • Not Synced
    After,
  • Not Synced
    having seen the suffering in the other person,
  • Not Synced
    we can go to him or to her and using the kind of language,
  • Not Synced
    called gentle loving speech
  • Not Synced
    in order to talk to him or to her.
  • Not Synced
    You may say,
  • Not Synced
    darling, I know that you have suffered so much,
  • Not Synced
    in the past,
  • Not Synced
    many years.
  • Not Synced
    I have not been able to help you to suffer less.
  • Not Synced
    In fact,
  • Not Synced
    I have reacted in such way,
  • Not Synced
    that made you suffer more, I'm sorry.
  • Not Synced
    Darling, it's not my intention to make you suffer.
  • Not Synced
    It's only because I did not see
  • Not Synced
    your suffering,
  • Not Synced
    have not understood the suffering in you.
  • Not Synced
    And the difficulties in you.
  • Not Synced
    So please, darling, help me.
  • Not Synced
    Please tell me what is in your heart.
  • Not Synced
    Tell me of sufferings, your difficulties, your despair.
  • Not Synced
    I believe that if i have seen and understood the suffering,
  • Not Synced
    I will not react
  • Not Synced
    the way I have in the past
  • Not Synced
    and made me suffer.
  • Not Synced
    Darling, you are partner,
  • Not Synced
    you are my father, your are my mother,
  • Not Synced
    your are my son, you are my daughter.
  • Not Synced
    I do not want you to suffer,
  • Not Synced
    I want you to be happy.
  • Not Synced
    But if you do not help me, who will help me?
  • Not Synced
    Many people, before the retreat,
  • Not Synced
    they could not believe that they can talk
  • Not Synced
    to the other person
  • Not Synced
    in that way.
  • Not Synced
    But after four or five days of
  • Not Synced
    practice
  • Not Synced
    they are able to use that kind of language
  • Not Synced
    that is called the loving speech.
  • Not Synced
    And when you speak that way,
  • Not Synced
    when you use the loving speech,
  • Not Synced
    you are able to open the doors of his/her heart.
  • Not Synced
    And he/she will empty the heart to you.
  • Not Synced
    Now you have the chance to practice
  • Not Synced
    the practice of Avalokiteshvara listen, listen with compassion.
  • Not Synced
    As I have said
  • Not Synced
    If you know how to listen with compassion,
  • Not Synced
    you can help the other person to suffer much less,
  • Not Synced
    just after one hour of listening.
  • Not Synced
    In order to succeed in the practice of compassionate listening,
  • Not Synced
    you have to practice mindfulness of compassion.
  • Not Synced
    If mindfulness of compassion is practiced
  • Not Synced
    during the time you listen
  • Not Synced
    then you are protected by the energy of compassion,
  • Not Synced
    and what the other person say will not touch of irritation and anger in you.
  • Not Synced
    And you'll be to listen for one hour or more.
  • Not Synced
    The practice is simple enough,
  • Not Synced
    and everyone can do it.
  • Not Synced
    During the time we listen,
  • Not Synced
    we have to try to remember one thing.
  • Not Synced
    I'm listening to him/her just,
  • Not Synced
    just...
  • Not Synced
    for one purpose,
  • Not Synced
    to help him/her suffer less.
  • Not Synced
    In that way, even if you use
  • Not Synced
    a lot of acusation, blames.
  • Not Synced
    Even if his speech is full of wrong information,
  • Not Synced
    wrong perseptions,
  • Not Synced
    I'm not going to interrupt him.
  • Not Synced
    I know that if I interrupt him,
  • Not Synced
    if I correct him,
  • Not Synced
    I'll transform this session of listening
  • Not Synced
    into a debate, that will be irritating.
  • Not Synced
    So even if he has a lot of wrong informations,
  • Not Synced
    wrong perseptions,
  • Not Synced
    if he is bitter in his way of speaking,
  • Not Synced
    if he blames a lot,
  • Not Synced
    if he acuses a lot,
  • Not Synced
    I still continue to listen.
  • Not Synced
    Because a mindfull person
  • Not Synced
    is only to listen and help her to suffer less.
  • Not Synced
    Later on, in three or four days,
  • Not Synced
    I'll be able to
  • Not Synced
    offer him/her some informations,
  • Not Synced
    so that he can correct his perseption,
  • Not Synced
    not now.
  • Not Synced
    Now is just the time to listen,
  • Not Synced
    and help him to suffer less.
  • Not Synced
    So if during the time you listen,
  • Not Synced
    if you know how to breath in and out mindfully,
  • Not Synced
    and keep in mind that
  • Not Synced
    mindfullness of compassion,
  • Not Synced
    you'll be able to do like bodhisattva Quan Yin,
  • Not Synced
    to listen with compassion
  • Not Synced
    and help the other person to suffer less.
  • Not Synced
    In the last 40 years we have offered
  • Not Synced
    so many retreats of mindfullness
  • Not Synced
    in Europe and America.
  • Not Synced
    People used to come and stay together in the campus
  • Not Synced
    for five or six days
  • Not Synced
    in order to attend the retreat.
  • Not Synced
    Sometimes the retreat is attended by
  • Not Synced
    1200 people, like the one we just finished in YMC Camp.
  • Not Synced
    The practice of deep listening, compassionate listening and loving speech
  • Not Synced
    always has the power to restore communication
  • Not Synced
    and to reconcile.
  • Not Synced
    And the miracle of reconciliation always take place in our retreat.
  • Not Synced
    If the other person is in the reatreat,
  • Not Synced
    restauring communication and reconcile will be easier,
  • Not Synced
    because that person has been
  • Not Synced
    exposed to the teaching,
  • Not Synced
    has learned a way to calm down,
  • Not Synced
    her feeling and emotions,
  • Not Synced
    have been able to understand the suffering in
  • Not Synced
    himself and in the other person.
  • Not Synced
    And if the other person is not in the retreat
  • Not Synced
    then you have the right to use,
  • Not Synced
    your portable telephone in order to practice.
  • Not Synced
    If on the fifth day of the reatreat,
  • Not Synced
    you ask people in the retreat to make good use of the practice of deep listening and loving speech
  • Not Synced
    in order to reconcile with the other person.
  • Not Synced
    We say that gentleman, ladies and gentleman,
  • Not Synced
    you have up to midnight tonight, in order to reconcile with the other person.
  • Not Synced
    Because you have learned enough,
  • Not Synced
    trainned enough, in order to do so.
  • Not Synced
    And...
  • Not Synced
    on the sixth day,
  • Not Synced
    always there are people who come up and report
  • Not Synced
    to us that the day before they have been able to reconcile
  • Not Synced
    with their father, their mother, with their partner and so on.
  • Not Synced
    Most of the people who attend to our retreats in Europe and America,
  • Not Synced
    they are not Buddhist.
  • Not Synced
    Most of them are of Jewish and Christian background.
  • Not Synced
    They have profited from the teaching and practice offered by the Buddha.
  • Not Synced
    And if not Buddhist can succeed in restoring communication and bring about communication,
  • Not Synced
    I'm sure that Buddhist can do it too.
  • Not Synced
    In the morning of the sixth day of the retreat,
  • Not Synced
    we offer to transmit to practioners the five mindfullness trainnings.
  • Not Synced
    In the old time we called them the five precepts.
  • Not Synced
    So in the last 40 years,
  • Not Synced
    after having been in touch with the suffering
  • Not Synced
    of our modern society
  • Not Synced
    we represent the five presepts in such way
  • Not Synced
    that
  • Not Synced
    can be relevant to our time.
  • Not Synced
    And there have been cerimonies of transmition of the five precepts.
  • Not Synced
    Than we lead the five mindfullness trainnings
  • Not Synced
    when
  • Not Synced
    700, 900 people kneeled down to receive the five trainnings at the same time.
  • Not Synced
    The five mindfulness trainnings are the expression
  • Not Synced
    very concrete expressions
  • Not Synced
    of the teaching of the Buddha on the Four Noble Truths
  • Not Synced
    and the Noble Eighthfold Path.
  • Not Synced
    The Noble Eightfold Path and
  • Not Synced
    the Five Mindfulness Trainnings
  • Not Synced
    are based on the kind of vision
  • Not Synced
    the kind of
  • Not Synced
    insight
  • Not Synced
    called right feel.
  • Not Synced
    Right Feel is a kind of insight
  • Not Synced
    that transcend all kind of discrimination.
  • Not Synced
    And you are able to remove discrimation
  • Not Synced
    you can remove all kind of fear, anger, separation
  • Not Synced
    and dispair.
  • Not Synced
    The first mindfulness trainning is the practice of
  • Not Synced
    protecting life.
  • Not Synced
    We know that if we do not have compassion in our heart
  • Not Synced
    we do not know how to protect life,
  • Not Synced
    not only the life of humans, but also the life of other species.
  • Not Synced
    The first mindfulness trainning, protecting life
  • Not Synced
    is the practice of cultivating, understanding
  • Not Synced
    and compassion.
  • Not Synced
    Understanding here, means understanding the suffering
  • Not Synced
    inside of yourself
  • Not Synced
    and in the other species.
  • Not Synced
    When you are able to understand suffering,
  • Not Synced
    compassion naturally arises.
  • Not Synced
    And compassion has the power to heal and to transform.
  • Not Synced
    It is why the first trainning, the first precpt.
  • Not Synced
    Is a factor,
  • Not Synced
    strong factor of happiness.
  • Not Synced
    Because a person who does not have any understanding
  • Not Synced
    and compassion, that person is actually alone
  • Not Synced
    and he/she cannot relatate to another human being.
  • Not Synced
    He/she cannot be a happy person.
  • Not Synced
    That is why cultivating understanding and compassion is the first factor
  • Not Synced
    of happiness.
  • Not Synced
    The second mindfulness trainning is about true happiness.
  • Not Synced
    Many people believe that happiness is made of wealth,
  • Not Synced
    fame
  • Not Synced
    power
  • Not Synced
    and sensual pleasures.
  • Not Synced
    But when we look around us,
  • Not Synced
    we see many people who have plenty of these four things
  • Not Synced
    money, power, fame and sex.
  • Not Synced
    They suffer very deeply,
  • Not Synced
    and many of them commit suicide.
  • Not Synced
    And we can see that there are people who are not wealthy,
  • Not Synced
    they are not famous,
  • Not Synced
    but they are truly happy.
  • Not Synced
    Because in them
  • Not Synced
    there is the energy of understanding and love
  • Not Synced
    and compassion.
  • Not Synced
    That is why the buddhist way to cultivate happiness
  • Not Synced
    is to cultivate more understanding
  • Not Synced
    and compassion.
  • Not Synced
    The third mindfulness trainning is about true love.
  • Not Synced
    We know that without love, happiness is not possible.
  • Not Synced
    But many of us do not know how to love
  • Not Synced
    and the more we love, the more we make the other person suffer.
  • Not Synced
    The Buddhist teaching of love is very clear.
  • Not Synced
    To love according to the Buddha is made of four elements.
  • Not Synced
    The first is loving kindness, maitri.
  • Not Synced
    The second is compassion, karuna.
  • Not Synced
    The third is joy,mudita.
