The Myth Of Human Nature

  • 0:18 - 0:18
We see the world, not as it is, but as we
are, or...as we are conditioned to see it.
  • 0:18 - 0:18
    The Myth of Human Nature
  • 0:18 - 0:21
In a society that is predicated on competition
  • 0:21 - 0:28
and really, very often the ruthless exploitation
    of one human being
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    by another
the profiteering of other people's problems
  • 0:32 - 0:38
and very often the creation of problems for
    the sole purpose of profiteering
  • 0:38 - 0:41
the ruling ideology will very often justify
    that behavior
  • 0:41 - 0:45
by appeals to some fundamental, unalterable
    human nature
  • 0:45 - 0:50
So the myth in our society is that people
are competitive by nature, and that they're
  • 0:50 - 0:55
    individualistic, and that they're selfish.
The reality is quite the opposite.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    We have certain human needs.
The only way that you can talk about human
  • 0:58 - 1:02
nature concretely is to recognize that there
    are certain human needs.
  • 1:02 - 1:07
We have a human need for companionship, for
close contact, to be loved, to be attached
  • 1:07 - 1:13
to, to be accepted, to be seen, to be received
    for who we are.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    If those needs are met,
we develop into people that are compassionate,
  • 1:18 - 1:25
cooperative, and who have empathy for other
people. So, the opposite that we often see
  • 1:26 - 1:30
in our society is in fact a distortion of
human nature, precisely because so few people
  • 1:30 - 1:35
    have their needs met.
So yes, you can talk about human nature but
  • 1:35 - 1:40
only in the sense of basic human needs that
lead to certain traits if they are met, and
  • 1:40 - 1:42
a different set of traits, if they're denied.
