-
Hey everyone,
-
welcome to lesson seven of information
-
report writing. Today is our last lesson
-
before you get to hand in your completed
-
information reports on wombats. I'm very
-
excited to see what they look like and
-
I hope that you have enjoyed writing
-
them as much as I know I'll have a great
-
time reading them.
-
So today we are going to start on action.
-
Oh sorry, we're going to be researchers
-
again. We're going to seek and select the
-
best source for information for the task
-
and we're going to start with action. So
-
action
-
is your chance to tell the reader
-
what
-
needs to be done to protect the wombat,
-
to make sure that it is around for many,
-
many, many, many, more years to come.
-
So what action needs to be
-
done or taken to ensure the survival of
-
your wombat,
-
of the wombat, because
-
in some instances it could be simple and
-
other things it might be a lot more
-
difficult.
-
So I want you to use lots of nice
-
colourful words to help make me feel
-
really compassionate and sad for the
-
wombat and for me to want to take action
-
against it. So I also want you to
-
answer the question, what needs to change
-
in the world to ensure it survives for
-
future generations.
-
So,
-
here's a couple that I already had so
-
take action to protect the numbat.
-
What you can do, so I really like it so
-
it's putting the emphasis on you, the
-
reader like what can you do. It's making
-
you feel responsible for protecting the
-
numbat.
-
So you can keep an eye out for numbats
-
when you are traveling through
-
potential numbat habitats and
-
report any sightings. So that's really
-
good information for scientists to have
-
and if you include the date and location,
-
probably really great for the scientists,
-
and then there's a little website that
-
you can go to.
-
Build more predator-free areas for the
-
numbats to live
-
and stop habitat loss, because by
-
chopping down trees and clearing land
-
you are giving the numbats less places
-
to hide from their predators.
-
Let me get rid of my head for a second.
-
Here's another one from my class
-
sloth bears are endangered.
-
Great,
-
powerful language there. They're
-
endangered, this is why we have to do
-
something about it, they are threatened
-
by habitat loss and hunting.
-
There are two really helpful steps that
-
you can follow to save sloth bears. So
-
again you can follow, so it's making you
-
the reader feel
-
like you can do something about it.
-
Less habitat loss,
-
habitat loss is a major threat to sloth
-
bears and I like the use of major. So
-
it's telling me it's a really big
-
concern to the sloth bears.
-
If we reduce it, and I like how you use
-
the word we there because it's making
-
you feel like you can work together and
-
we can create a solution.
-
It will help to increase the population
-
of sloth bears so by
-
reducing habitat loss the population of
-
sloth bears will probably go up. That's
-
what I read when I read this,
-
reduce hunting, sloth bears are hunted
-
a lot for their shaggy black fur and
-
their gall bladders in for Chinese
-
medicine.
-
It is a major threat for them and if we
-
decline hunting that will be a huge help.
-
Well done!
-
Alright here is one on emperor
-
penguins.
-
Well as I wrote about earlier in threats,
-
we need to stop climate change,
-
overfishing and plastic pollution, but
-
how exactly do we stop those things?
-
The first thing I'm going to say about
-
that sentence is
-
it's very powerful and very dramatic, but
-
remember that we are writing information
-
reports, we're not writing persuasive
-
texts. So my recommendation so far on
-
this one is to get rid of that whole
-
sentence, we want the facts
-
and we want them nice and clear and
-
concise. So,
-
the biggest threat to get rid of probably,
-
just state it as it is the biggest
-
threat to emperor penguins is
-
climate change.
-
Eat less meat and dairy.
-
Then again, get rid of, you may be
-
wondering you go, eating
-
less
-
meat and dairy means that there's less
-
cows, less farts and when they drop
-
manure on the earth it produces methane
-
or greenhouse gas emissions which
-
contribute to climate change.
-
So remember state the facts.
-
Don't make it a persuasive device,
-
just an information report.
-
Let's move to the next part of this one.
-
Overfishing, getting rid of my head again.
-
There is one way
-
we can stop overfishing, we just need to
-
stop catching more fish that will
-
probably just throw back in the water.
-
Overfishing is just a bunch of people
-
who think about the future more than the
-
present. Like I may need to eat this fish
-
in December,
-
or when you stare at the fish in the
-
freezer you think I'll use it someday
-
again.
-
State the facts please,
-
you've got really great information in
-
here but I just want the facts.
-
Alright,
-
so
-
now it is your turn.
-
Pause the video
-
and I want you to have a go
-
at, your turn, how are you going to
-
encourage
-
other people that are reading this
-
information report
-
to help the wombat?
-
How are you going to get them to take
-
action?
-
Pause the video
-
and have a go.
-
Okay the last section that you need to
-
fill in before you finish your
-
information report
-
is pictures.
-
So,
-
by pictures
-
we want you to find some pictures of
-
wombats that
-
you think add value to your information
-
report.
-
So that they
-
have some meaning to it, they're not just
-
pictures that you think are cute. So for
-
example if you look down here
-
I have two pictures. I've got this one,
-
never give up on your dreams keep
-
sleeping and then I've got this picture of
-
a koala drinking cup of tea with some
-
sunglasses.
-
These pictures do not,
-
I repeat, do not, add value to your
-
information report! They have nothing to
-
do with
-
what you are trying to get across.
-
Okay then if you look on the right, over
-
here I have a couple of pictures that
-
add value.
-
So this is a picture of a koala baby
-
gripping onto a tree and you may be able
-
to integrate that into your information
-
report somehow and then the other
-
picture over here is a date labeled
-
diagram of a koala which can also
-
add value to your information report.
-
So please, please, please,
-
I don't want to see these cute little
-
pictures I actually want to see
-
pictures that add value to your
-
information report.
-
I also want to introduce to you today
-
photo captions. I know that in class I
-
said to my class about photo captions
-
but
-
let's just do a quick recap about it. So
-
it's a few lines of text used to explain
-
or elaborate on the published photos.
-
So for example if you look down here at
-
the four pictures of the koalas,
-
not much text is included but it tells
-
you the different
-
types of koalas. So this one's a southern
-
koala, this one's a northern koala
-
and then southern and
-
northern. So they look different and so
-
to help the reader they've put photo
-
captions underneath
-
so that they know what they're looking
-
at and this is just one that I put on
-
this picture here it's a label diagram
-
of a koala. Yes
-
I can look at that and I can know, but
-
perhaps it also helps me as a teacher to
-
know what you are looking at as well.
-
Alright,
-
it's your turn
-
find
-
three or four photos of the wombat which
-
will add value to your information
-
report,
-
and you need to write the photo captions
-
like I've said every other lesson before,
-
make sure it is in your own words.
-
Pause the video and come back once
-
you're done good luck.
-
Alright,
-
a couple last things,
-
anytime you take a picture from
-
somewhere don't forget to include where
-
you got it from, your source.
-
Don't forget to include that information
-
in your bibliography, so any pictures
-
that you use whether it's internet or
-
books
-
needs to be included in your
-
bibliography. By now I'm expecting about,
-
you know, five or six at least in your
-
bibliography.
-
So,
-
now that you have done those and you
-
have cut and pasted
-
it all into your google document
-
it is time to submit your completed
-
information reports on
-
wombats.
-
I just want to say thank you very much
-
for all your hard work completing this
-
and, like I said before, I'm really,
-
really looking forward to reading them
-
and hopefully learning some new
-
information about wombats.
-
But well done
-
and until tomorrow when we start a new
-
topic,
-
have fun learning and I'll see you soon
-
bye!
